Korean Lesson: Finding the Main Point in Korean News (Elementary Skimming)
Learn to skim Korean news articles and broadcasts for the main point using simple question patterns and signal words.

Korean news often puts the main point in the first sentence, but the wording can be formal and dense. This lesson teaches you a simple skimming routine: look at the headline, read the first sentence, then check for repeated nouns and key endings like -습니다 and -라고 합니다. You will learn five useful phrases to ask and state the main point, and practice with short news-style examples. The goal is to get the gist quickly, not to analyze every detail.

Make it make sense
Useful pattern
Korean news often uses the pattern 'N은/는 ...입니다' or '...라고 합니다' to state the main point. For example: '정부는 새 정책을 발표했습니다.' (The government announced a new policy.) The topic marker 은/는 helps you find what the sentence is about. Another pattern is '...에 따르면, ...' (According to ...), which often introduces the source and main claim. When skimming, focus on the first sentence and repeated nouns like 정부 (government), 시장 (market), or 사건 (incident). Note that -습니다 is the formal polite ending used in news writing and reporting; it is not a marker of the main point itself, but it signals the formal register typical of news.
When to use it
Use these phrases when you have limited time and need the gist of a news article or broadcast. Start with the headline: '제목을 보세요.' Then read the first sentence: '첫 문장에 핵심이 있습니다.' If you are unsure, ask: '이 기사의 핵심은 무엇입니까?' or '무슨 내용입니까?' After skimming, restate: '다시 말하면, ...입니다.' This routine works for both written articles and short broadcast reports, but avoid using it for detailed analysis or opinion pieces where the main point may be later.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

Korean news tends to be formal and uses the formal polite endings -습니다/-ㅂ니다. When speaking with teachers or older colleagues, use these polite forms. With close friends, you can use casual speech, but for news discussions, polite style is safer. Also, Korean headlines often omit particles and use noun endings, so the first sentence is usually clearer for finding the main point.
One thing to watch for
Assuming the main point is always in the last sentence, as in some English news styles.
Try this instead: In Korean news, the main point is usually in the first sentence. For example, '정부는 새 정책을 발표했습니다. 이 정책은...' The first sentence states the key event; later sentences give details.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
