In Korean, offering help is not just about translating "Can I help?" word-for-word. You need to choose the right level of politeness and use verbs that match the situation. This lesson teaches you how to ask "Can I help with anything?" in polite Korean, how to respond when someone offers help, and how to accept or decline. You will practice key phrases like "도와드릴까요?" and "뭐 도와드릴 거 있어요?" and learn when to use each. By the end, you will be able to offer assistance naturally in everyday conversations.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask "Can I help with anything?" in polite Korean.
    • accept or decline an offer of help appropriately.
    • use the verb 돕다 (dopda) in honorific and polite forms.

    je-ga do-wa-deu-ril-ge-yo.

    Yes, thank you for helping.

    ne, do-wa-ju-syeo-seo gam-sa-ham-ni-da.

Accepting help and thanking the person. Formal polite.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The verb 돕다 (dopda) means "to help." To offer help politely, use the honorific form 도와드리다 (dowa-deurida) + -(으)ㄹ까요? This becomes 도와드릴까요? (do-wa-deu-ril-kka-yo?). For example, 도와드릴까요? means "Shall I help you?" To ask if there is anything to help with, use 뭐 도와드릴 거 있어요? (mwo do-wa-deu-ril geo i-sseo-yo?). The subject marker 제가 (je-ga) can be added for emphasis: 제가 도와드릴까요? (je-ga do-wa-deu-ril-kka-yo?).

    When to use it

Use 도와드릴까요? when you see someone clearly needing help, like carrying heavy bags. Use 뭐 도와드릴 거 있어요? when you want to offer general assistance without a specific task in mind. If someone offers help, accept with 네, 도와주셔서 감사합니다. (ne, do-wa-ju-syeo-seo gam-sa-ham-ni-da.) or decline with 괜찮아요, 혼자 할 수 있어요. (gwaen-chan-a-yo, hon-ja hal su i-sseo-yo.). Avoid using these phrases with close friends; use 도와줄까? (do-wa-jul-kka?) instead.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    뭐 도와드릴 거 있어요?

    그럼요. 제가 도와드릴게요.

    Of course. I will help you.geu-reom-yo. je-ga do-wa-deu-ril-ge-yo.
    B

    도와주셔서 감사합니다.

    Thank you for helping.do-wa-ju-syeo-seo gam-sa-ham-ni-da.

A little context goes a long way

In Korean culture, offering help is often done indirectly to avoid imposing. Using 도와드릴까요? shows respect. If you are close friends, a simpler 도와줄까? is fine. Also, when someone offers help, it's polite to initially decline once before accepting, but this is not mandatory.

    One thing to watch for

Using 도와주세요 (do-wa-ju-se-yo) to offer help, which actually means "Please help me."

Try this instead: To offer help, use 도와드릴까요? (do-wa-deu-ril-kka-yo?) or 도와줄까? (do-wa-jul-kka?) for friends. 도와주세요 is a request for help, not an offer.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you politely ask an older colleague if they need help with anything?

    Show a sample answer

    뭐 도와드릴 거 있어요?

This phrase asks if there is anything to help with, using honorific 도와드리다. Other variations like 도와드릴까요? are also correct if a specific task is visible.

2What is the polite way to decline an offer of help?

    Show a sample answer

    괜찮아요, 혼자 할 수 있어요.

This means "It's okay, I can do it alone." It politely declines while reassuring the helper. You could also say 괜찮아요, 제가 할게요.

3Change 도와드릴까요? to a casual form for a close friend.

    Show a sample answer

    도와줄까?

For close friends, drop the honorific 드리 and use 도와줄까? The polite -요 is also dropped. This is informal and friendly.

    Take this with you

To offer help in Korean, use 도와드릴까요? for polite situations and 도와줄까? for friends. Remember that 도와주세요 means "help me," not "I help you."
