Korean for Social Faux Pas: Saying 'Oops, My Mistake' and Moving On

Learn elementary Korean phrases to recover from social blunders: admit a slip, clarify you meant no harm, apologize lightly, and move on naturally.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

Everyone makes social slips: you call someone by the wrong name, forget an introduction, or say the wrong thing at the wrong moment. In Korean, recovering well depends less on a deep apology and more on a quick, light acknowledgement plus a clear signal that you meant no harm. This lesson gives you short, polite expressions for those moments. You will learn how to say 'Oops, my mistake,' clarify 'I didn't mean that,' and then move the conversation forward without making the moment heavier than it needs to be.

    By the end, you can…

    • admit a small social mistake in Korean with an appropriate level of politeness.
    • clarify that I did not mean something and apologize briefly.
    • move on naturally after a social slip without over-apologizing.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    Oops, that's my mistake.

    a-i-ku, je sil-su-ye-yo

Use right after a small slip, such as using the wrong name or forgetting a detail. 아이쿠 is a soft exclamation, not a strong curse.

I got that mixed up. / I was mistaken.

    je-ga chak-ga-kae-sseo-yo

Good when you confused two people, dates, or facts. It admits the error without sounding dramatic.

    That's not what I meant.

    geu-reon tteu-si a-ni-eo-sseo-yo

Use when your words were misunderstood. It clarifies intent before you apologize.

    I was rude / I made a social blunder.

    sil-lye-hae-sseum-ni-da

A polite, somewhat formal apology for a social slip, such as interrupting or using the wrong title.

    I'm sorry, I'll be careful.

    joe-song-hae-yo, je-ga jo-si-mal-ge-yo

A brief apology plus a promise to be careful. Use it when the other person seems bothered, then stop apologizing.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

A light recovery often follows this shape: exclamation + admission + clarification. (Oops, that's my mistake. That's not what I meant.) The exclamation 아이쿠 softens the moment. 제 실수예요 admits the slip without blaming anyone. 그런 뜻이 아니었어요 redirects to your intention. You can also use 제가 착각했어요 for a factual mix-up. Keep the tone calm and slightly self-deprecating, not overly serious.

    When to use it

Use these expressions for social blunders, not for serious harm. If you call a coworker by the wrong name, say If you accidentally use casual speech with someone you just met, say 실례했습니다 and switch to polite speech. If a joke lands badly, say 그런 뜻이 아니었어요, then briefly apologize with 죄송해요. After that, change the subject or continue the conversation. Repeating apologies can make the other person uncomfortable, so one clear recovery is usually enough.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    Oops, that's my mistake. I said your name wrong, teacher.a-i-ku, je sil-su-ye-yo. seon-saeng-nim seong-ha-meul jal-mot mal-hae-sseo-yo.
    B

    It's okay. It happens often.gwaen-chan-a-yo. ja-ju in-neun i-ri-e-yo.
    A

    That's not what I meant. I'm sorry, I'll be careful.geu-reon tteu-si a-ni-eo-sseo-yo. joe-song-hae-yo, je-ga jo-si-mal-ge-yo.
    B

    I understand. Let's talk again.al-ge-sseo-yo. da-si i-ya-gi-hae-yo.

A little context goes a long way

In Korean, a quick acknowledgement and a brief apology often work better than a long explanation. Honorifics and speech levels matter: if you slip with someone older or of higher status, use polite endings like -요 or formal 실례했습니다, and avoid casual speech until they invite it. A calm, brief recovery shows awareness without creating a heavy mood.

    One thing to watch for

Using a heavy apology like 정말 죄송합니다, 제가 잘못했습니다 for a tiny social slip such as forgetting a name.

Try this instead: For small social blunders, a lighter recovery is usually more natural: 아이쿠, 제 실수예요. 그런 뜻이 아니었어요. Save the strongest apologies for real harm or serious mistakes.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1You accidentally call your new coworker by the wrong name. What can you say?

    Show a sample answer

This admits the slip lightly and naturally. You could also say 제가 착각했어요, which is equally fine for a mix-up.

2Your joke was misunderstood and someone looks upset. What two-step response fits?

    Show a sample answer

First clarify your intention, then apologize briefly. If the person is older or higher status, use polite endings like -요 or 실례했습니다.

3You used casual speech with someone you just met. What should you say and do next?

    Show a sample answer

This acknowledges the social blunder politely and promises care. Then switch to polite speech and continue the conversation without over-apologizing.

    Take this with you

For social slips in Korean, acknowledge quickly, clarify your intent, apologize briefly, and move on. Keep the tone light and the politeness level right.
