Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Friends talking over coffee in a city café

When you buy gimbap at a Korean shop, it often comes pre-sliced into bite-sized pieces. That's convenient for eating right away, but if you're taking it to go, those slices can fall apart and the filling can spill. In this lesson, you'll learn how to ask for a whole, uncut roll. The key is to use the phrase '자르지 마세요' (jareuji maseyo), which means 'Please don't cut it.' You'll also learn how to ask for '한 줄' (han jul), meaning 'one roll,' and the polite request '안 잘라 주세요' (an jalla juseyo), meaning 'Please don't cut it for me.' By the end, you'll be able to order confidently and keep your gimbap intact.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask for gimbap that hasn't been cut yet using '자르지 마세요'.
    • request one whole roll with '한 줄'.
    • politely ask staff not to cut the gimbap with '안 잘라 주세요'.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    자르지 마세요

    Please don't cut it.

    ja-reu-ji ma-se-yo

Use this when you want to stop the staff from cutting the gimbap. It's a negative command made with '-지 마세요'; it's polite in form but can sound direct, so a friendly tone helps.

    한 줄

    one roll

    han jul

This is the counter for a whole roll of gimbap. Use it when ordering a single roll.

    안 잘라 주세요

Please don't cut it for me.

    an jal-la ju-se-yo

A softer, more polite request. Literally 'Please don't cut (it) for me.' Use this to ask for the gimbap to be left whole.

    김밥 한 줄 주세요

Please give me one roll of gimbap.

    gim-bap han jul ju-se-yo

The standard way to order one roll. You can add '안 잘라 주세요' after this to specify you don't want it cut.

    그대로 포장해 주세요

    Please wrap it as is.

    geu-dae-ro po-jang-hae ju-se-yo

Use this to ask for the gimbap to be wrapped without cutting. '그대로' means 'as is' or 'without change.'

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern '자르지 마세요' is made from the verb '자르다' (jareuda, to cut) plus the negative command ending '-지 마세요'. It means 'Please don't cut.' You can use this pattern with other verbs too, like '넣지 마세요' (neo-chi ma-se-yo, please don't put it in) or '데우지 마세요' (de-u-ji ma-se-yo, please don't heat it up). For a softer request, use '안 잘라 주세요', which literally means 'Please don't cut it for me.' The verb '자르다' changes to '잘라' when combined with '주세요'. So you can say '김밥 안 잘라 주세요' (gim-bap an jal-la ju-se-yo) to mean 'Please don't cut the gimbap.'

    When to use it

Many gimbap shops cut the roll by default because it's easier to eat immediately. If you're taking it to go, especially for a picnic or a trip, you might prefer it whole. Use '자르지 마세요' when you see the staff about to cut it, or say '안 잘라 주세요' when ordering. For example, you can say '김밥 한 줄 주세요. 안 잘라 주세요.' (Please give me one roll of gimbap. Please don't cut it.) If you want it wrapped without cutting, add '그대로 포장해 주세요' (Please wrap it as is). This is especially useful if you're buying several rolls and want to keep them intact.

A little context goes a long way

In Korea, gimbap is often cut into pieces by default, especially at specialty shops. Asking for it uncut is perfectly normal, but it's polite to phrase it as a request rather than a demand. Using '안 잘라 주세요' is softer than '자르지 마세요', which can sound a bit blunt if said without a friendly tone. If you're unsure, you can simply say '그대로 주세요' (Please give it as is). Most staff will happily accommodate.

    One thing to watch for

Using '자르지 마세요' with a sharp tone or without '주세요' in a polite request.

Try this instead: While '자르지 마세요' is correct, it can sound commanding. For a softer request, use '안 잘라 주세요' or add '주세요' to make it polite. For example, '김밥 안 잘라 주세요' is better than just '자르지 마세요' when ordering.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

To get your gimbap uncut, say '김밥 한 줄 주세요. 안 잘라 주세요.' or '자르지 마세요.' Remember to use a polite tone and add '주세요' for requests.
