Korean Contrast Patterns: Expressing Conflict Between Ideas

Learn to describe how ideas contrast or conflict in Korean using patterns like -지만, -는데, and -에도 불구하고.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

When two ideas pull in opposite directions—freedom versus security, speed versus accuracy—Korean offers several grammatical patterns to express that tension. This lesson focuses on contrast and conflict, not abstract relationships. You will learn to connect clauses with -지만 (but), -는데 (while/but), and -에도 불구하고 (despite). You will also use vocabulary like 갈등 (conflict) and 상충하다 (to conflict). By the end, you can say 'Freedom and security often conflict' and similar statements naturally.

    By the end, you can…

    • connect two contrasting ideas using -지만 and -는데.
    • use -에도 불구하고 to express 'despite' a conflicting fact.
    • talk about conflicts between abstract concepts like freedom and security.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    자유와 안보는 종종 갈등을 일으킨다.

    Freedom and security often conflict.

    Ja-yu-wa an-bo-neun jong-jong gal-deung-eul il-eu-kin-da.

Formal written style. Use for essays or presentations. 갈등을 일으키다 means 'to cause conflict'.

    자유와 안보는 서로 상충한다.

Freedom and security conflict with each other.

    Ja-yu-wa an-bo-neun seo-ro sang-chung-han-da.

상충하다 is a formal verb meaning 'to conflict/contradict'. Common in academic or policy discussions.

경제 성장은 중요하지만 환경 보호도 필요하다.

Economic growth is important, but environmental protection is also necessary.

    Gyeong-je seong-jang-eun jung-yo-ha-ji-man hwan-gyeong bo-ho-do pil-yo-ha-da.

Uses -지만 to contrast two clauses. Polite formal ending -다.

    속도는 빠른데 정확성은 떨어진다.

The speed is fast, but the accuracy is low.

    Sok-do-neun ppa-reun-de jeong-hwak-seong-eun tteol-eo-jin-da.

-는데 here shows contrast: 'while/but'. The second clause often gives an unexpected or opposing fact.

많은 노력에도 불구하고 결과는 좋지 않았다.

Despite much effort, the result was not good.

    Man-eun no-ryeok-e-do bul-gu-ha-go gyeol-gwa-neun jo-chi an-at-da.

-에도 불구하고 means 'despite'. Attach to a noun or nominalized clause. Formal and emphatic.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The most common contrast pattern is -지만. Attach it to a verb or adjective stem: 가다 → 가지만, 좋다 → 좋지만. Example: 자유는 중요하지만 안보도 중요하다 (Freedom is important, but security is also important). Another pattern is -는데, which often sets up a contrast or background: 비싸는데 품질이 좋아요 (It's expensive, but the quality is good). For a stronger 'despite', use -에도 불구하고 after a noun: 노력에도 불구하고 (despite efforts). These patterns let you express conflict without using the word 갈등.

    When to use it

Use -지만 in everyday conversation and writing for simple contrasts. Use -는데 when the second clause provides a surprising or contrasting fact, often with a softer tone. Use -에도 불구하고 in formal speech or writing to emphasize that a result is unexpected given the circumstances. For abstract conflicts, you can also use 상충하다: 자유와 안보는 상충하는 가치다 (Freedom and security are conflicting values). Choose the pattern based on formality and how strongly you want to highlight the conflict.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

자유와 안보는 항상 갈등을 일으키는 것 같아.

    Freedom and security always seem to conflict.Ja-yu-wa an-bo-neun hang-sang gal-deung-eul il-eu-ki-neun geot gat-a.
    B

맞아. 자유를 강조하면 안보가 약해지는데, 반대도 마찬가지야.

    Right. If you emphasize freedom, security weakens, and vice versa.Ma-ja. Ja-yu-reul gang-jo-ha-myeon an-bo-ga yak-hae-ji-neun-de, ban-dae-do ma-chan-ga-ji-ya.
    A

그럼에도 불구하고 우리는 둘 다 포기할 수 없잖아.

    Nevertheless, we can't give up either one.Geu-reom-e-do bul-gu-ha-go u-ri-neun dul da po-gi-hal su eop-jan-a.
    B

그래서 균형을 찾는 게 중요하지. 어느 한쪽만 강조하면 문제가 생겨.

    That's why finding a balance is important. If you emphasize only one side, problems arise.Geu-rae-seo gyun-hyeong-eul chat-neun ge jung-yo-ha-ji. Eo-neu han-jjok-man gang-jo-ha-myeon mun-je-ga saeng-gyeo.

A little context goes a long way

In Korean, direct disagreement can sound harsh. Using -는데 or -지만 softens the contrast, making it more polite. In formal writing, 상충하다 and 갈등을 일으키다 are preferred over blunt statements. When discussing sensitive topics like politics, Koreans often use indirect patterns to avoid confrontation.

    One thing to watch for

Using -지만 with nouns directly, e.g., 자유지만 안보 (wrong).

Try this instead: -지만 attaches to verb/adjective stems, not nouns. For nouns, use -이지만: 자유이지만 안보는 중요하다 (It is freedom, but security is important). Or rephrase with -에도 불구하고: 자유에도 불구하고 안보는 필요하다 (Despite freedom, security is necessary).

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'Speed is fast, but accuracy is low' using -는데?

    Show a sample answer

    속도는 빠른데 정확성은 떨어진다.

-는데 connects the first clause (fast speed) with a contrasting second clause (low accuracy). Other patterns like -지만 (속도는 빠르지만 정확성은 떨어진다) are also correct.

2What is the formal verb meaning 'to conflict'?

    Show a sample answer

    상충하다

상충하다 is a formal verb used for abstract conflicts, e.g., 자유와 안보는 상충한다. 갈등을 일으키다 is another option but more neutral.

3Translate: 'Despite many efforts, the result was not good.'

    Show a sample answer

많은 노력에도 불구하고 결과는 좋지 않았다.

-에도 불구하고 attaches to the noun 노력. You could also use -지만: 많은 노력을 했지만 결과는 좋지 않았다, but -에도 불구하고 is more emphatic.

    Take this with you

Use -지만 for simple contrasts, -는데 for softer or surprising contrasts, and -에도 불구하고 for strong 'despite'. For abstract conflicts, 상충하다 and 갈등을 일으키다 are your key verbs.
