Expressing Strong Certainty in Korean: 꼭, 반드시, and 틀림없이
Learn to express strong certainty in Korean with 꼭, 반드시, and 틀림없이. Build confident sentences like "I'm definitely coming" and tell certainty apart from mere possibility.

Korean has several adverbs that express strong certainty, and they are not interchangeable. In this lesson you will learn 꼭 (kkok), 반드시 (bandeusi), and 틀림없이 (teullimeopsi), plus the noun phrase 확실해요 (hwaksilhaeyo), meaning "it's certain." These express confidence, not possibility, so they contrast with maybe-words like 아마 (ama) and 어쩌면 (eojjeomyeon). You will practice placing them correctly in sentences and choosing the right one for promises, rules, and confident predictions.
By the end, you can…
- express strong certainty in Korean using 꼭, 반드시, and 틀림없이.
- tell certainty adverbs apart from possibility words like 아마 and 어쩌면.
- make a confident promise such as "I'm definitely coming" in Korean.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

저는 꼭 갈 거예요.
I'm definitely coming. / I will certainly go.
jeo-neun kkok gal geoyeyo
꼭 before the verb makes a promise or intention sound firm. Very common in everyday speech.
내일 꼭 오세요.
Please be sure to come tomorrow.
naeil kkok oseyo
With a request, 꼭 means "be sure to." It adds insistence without being rude.
반드시 연락하세요.
You must contact me without fail.
bandeusi yeollakhaseyo
반드시 is stronger and more formal than 꼭. Common in notices, rules, and serious requests.
그분은 틀림없이 오실 거예요.
He will certainly come.
geubuneun teullimeopsi osil geoyeyo
틀림없이 expresses confidence in a prediction, like "without a doubt." It often pairs with future tense.
확실해요?
Are you sure? / Is it certain?
hwaksilhaeyo
A question asking for confirmation. The polite answer is 네, 확실해요 (ne, hwaksilhaeyo), "Yes, I'm sure."
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
Certainty adverbs go before the verb. Compare 저는 꼭 갈 거예요 (jeo-neun kkok gal geoyeyo, "I'm definitely coming") with 저는 아마 갈 거예요 (jeo-neun ama gal geoyeyo, "I'll probably come"). Only 꼭 shows full confidence. For a stronger, more formal tone, use 반드시: 반드시 갈 거예요 (bandeusi gal geoyeyo). To say something is certain as a fact, use the noun 확실: 그건 확실해요 (geugeon hwaksilhaeyo, "That's certain").
When to use it
Use 꼭 for personal promises and friendly insistence: 내일 꼭 전화할게요 (naeil kkok jeonhwahalgeyo, "I'll definitely call tomorrow"). Use 반드시 for rules, deadlines, and formal commitments: 반드시 안전벨트를 매세요 (bandeusi anjeonbelteureul maeseyo, "You must fasten your seatbelt"). Use 틀림없이 for confident predictions about the future: 비가 틀림없이 올 거예요 (biga teullimeopsi ol geoyeyo, "It will certainly rain"). Do not use these words when you only mean "maybe."
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
내일 모임에 올 수 있어요?
Can you come to the gathering tomorrow?naeil moime ol su isseoyo?네, 저는 꼭 갈 거예요.
Yes, I'm definitely coming.ne, jeoneun kkok gal geoyeyo정말 확실해요?
Are you really sure?jeongmal hwaksilhaeyo?네, 틀림없이 갈 거예요. 반드시요.
Yes, I will certainly come. Without fail.ne, teullimeopsi gal geoyeyo. bandeusiyoA little context goes a long way
꼭 is the everyday choice for promises and friendly requests. 반드시 sounds formal and authoritative, so it fits announcements, rules, and serious commitments better than casual chat. 틀림없이 stresses confidence in a prediction. Using 반드시 with close friends can sound stiff or overly serious, so 꼭 is usually safer in relaxed conversation.
One thing to watch for
Using 아마 (ama, "maybe") together with 꼭, as in 아마 꼭 갈 거예요.
Try this instead: Certainty and possibility conflict, so choose one. Say 저는 꼭 갈 거예요 (jeo-neun kkok gal geoyeyo, "I'm definitely coming") for confidence, or 저는 아마 갈 거예요 (jeo-neun ama gal geoyeyo, "I'll probably come") for possibility.

반드시 (bandeusi)
반드시 is stronger and more formal, so it suits rules and official notices. 꼭 is acceptable in speech but sounds more casual.
3Translate: "It will certainly rain."

비가 틀림없이 올 거예요. (biga teullimeopsi ol geoyeyo)
틀림없이 expresses confidence in a prediction. 비가 반드시 올 거예요 is also possible but sounds more formal.
Use 꼭 for everyday promises, 반드시 for formal rules and strong commitments, and 틀림없이 for confident predictions. Keep them separate from 아마, which only shows possibility.
