Korean: Sharing Your Opinion Politely with "I Think..." (제 생각에는)

Learn to state your own view in Korean with 제 생각에는 and -다고 생각해요, then acknowledge a different opinion politely without turning it into an argument.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

When you want to share a view in Korean, such as "I think education is important," the key structure is a quoted clause plus 생각해요 (saenggakhaeyo, "I think"). You attach -다고 (dago) to the clause before 생각해요. This lesson teaches that pattern, the softener 제 생각에는 (je saenggag-eneun, "in my opinion"), and one respectful phrase for recognizing that someone else may see things differently. Stating your stance is not the same as disagreeing: you are offering your own view, not attacking theirs.

    By the end, you can…

    • state my own opinion in Korean using 제 생각에는 ... -다고 생각해요.
    • say "I think education is important" and similar views about everyday topics.
    • acknowledge a different opinion politely without starting an argument.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    제 생각에는 교육이 중요하다고 생각해요.

In my opinion, I think education is important.

    je saenggag-eneun gyoyugi jungyohadago saenggakhaeyo

The core pattern for this lesson. 제 생각에는 softens the statement; -다고 생각해요 marks it clearly as your own view, not a fact about the world.

    저는 그렇게 생각해요.

I think so. / That is how I think.

    jeoneun geureoke saenggakhaeyo

A simple way to state your own view. 저는 (jeoneun) means "as for me," so it keeps the focus on your own stance. Note that this does not mean "I think so too"; for agreement, say 저도 그렇게 생각해요 (jeodo geureoke saenggakhaeyo).

    그렇게 생각할 수도 있어요.

You could think that way too. / That is also possible.

    geureoke saenggakhal sudo isseoyo

Use this to acknowledge another person's view without saying you agree. -ㄹ 수도 있어요 means "it is also possible that...".

    다른 생각도 존중해요.

    I also respect different opinions.

    dareun saenggakdo jonjunghaeyo

A respectful line for keeping a discussion calm. 다른 생각 (dareun saenggak) means "a different opinion," not "a wrong opinion."

    교육이 중요하다고 생각하세요?

Do you think education is important?

    gyoyugi jungyohadago saenggakhaseyo?

A polite question form. -세요 (-seyo) makes it appropriate for someone older or less familiar than you.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern is [clause] + -다고 생각해요. For an adjective or verb stem, add -다고 before 생각해요: 중요하다 (jungyohada, "to be important") becomes 중요하다고 생각해요 (jungyohadago saenggakhaeyo, "I think it is important"). For a noun plus 이다 (ida, "to be"), use -(이)라고 생각해요: 좋은 교육이라고 생각해요 (joeun gyoyugirago saenggakhaeyo, "I think it is a good education"). Add 제 생각에는 at the start to make clear that this is your personal view.

    When to use it

Use this pattern when you want to offer your own view, not to correct someone else. In a friendly discussion you might say 제 생각에는 교육이 중요하다고 생각해요 (je saenggag-eneun gyoyugi jungyohadago saenggakhaeyo). If the other person says something different, you can answer 그렇게 생각할 수도 있어요 (geureoke saenggakhal sudo isseoyo) and then add your own view. This keeps the exchange respectful: you state your stance, and you leave room for theirs.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    제 생각에는 교육이 중요하다고 생각해요.

    B

그렇게 생각할 수도 있어요. 저는 경험이 더 중요하다고 생각해요.

You could think that way. I think experience is more important.geureoke saenggakhal sudo isseoyo. jeoneun gyeongheomi deo jungyohadago saenggakhaeyo

    네, 다른 생각도 존중해요.

Yes, I respect different opinions too.ne, dareun saenggakdo jonjunghaeyo
    B

    감사합니다. 좋은 이야기였어요.

Thank you. That was a good conversation.gamsahamnida. joeun iyagiyeosseoyo

A little context goes a long way

Korean conversation often softens opinions with 제 생각에는 (je saenggag-eneun) or 저는 (jeoneun) so the statement sounds personal rather than absolute. With teachers, older relatives, or new colleagues, use polite -요 (-yo) endings and consider -습니다 (-seumnida) in formal settings. Among close friends, plain forms like 내 생각에는 ... -다고 생각해 (nae saenggag-eneun ... -dago saenggakhae) are common.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 교육이 중요해요, 맞아요? (gyoyugi jungyohaeyo, majayo?) to mean "Education is important, right?" when you actually want to state your own view.

Try this instead: 맞아요? asks for agreement and can pressure the listener. To state your stance, use 제 생각에는 교육이 중요하다고 생각해요 (je saenggag-eneun gyoyugi jungyohadago saenggakhaeyo). If you do want to check agreement, ask 교육이 중요하다고 생각하세요? (gyoyugi jungyohadago saenggakhaseyo?) instead.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say "I think education is important" politely in Korean?

    Show a sample answer

    제 생각에는 교육이 중요하다고 생각해요.

제 생각에는 marks it as your view, and 중요하다고 생각해요 uses the -다고 생각해요 pattern. 저는 교육이 중요하다고 생각해요 is also correct and slightly more direct.

2Your friend says something you see differently. Which phrase acknowledges their view without agreeing?

    Show a sample answer

    그렇게 생각할 수도 있어요.

-ㄹ 수도 있어요 means "it is also possible that...", so you recognize their view without saying you share it. 다른 생각도 존중해요 is also fine when you want to emphasize respect.

3Change 저는 교육이 중요하다고 생각해요 into a polite question to an older person.

    Show a sample answer

    교육이 중요하다고 생각하세요?

Replacing -해요 with -세요 makes the question polite for an older or less familiar listener. 교육이 중요하다고 생각해요? is understandable among close friends but less polite in that situation.

    Take this with you

State your own view with 제 생각에는 ... -다고 생각해요, and treat a different view as possible with 그렇게 생각할 수도 있어요. Sharing your stance is not the same as disagreeing.
