Discussing Stereotypes Diplomatically in Korean: "Some people say... but I think..."

Learn intermediate Korean patterns for introducing other people's claims with distance and adding your own nuanced view without sounding blunt or offensive.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A quiet illustrated scene for evening language practice

At intermediate level, the challenge is not just making sentences but managing distance and politeness. Korean has several ways to report what "some people say" without endorsing it, and to add your own view without sounding confrontational. This lesson teaches the core patterns 어떤 사람들은 ... 다고 생각해요, and ... You will practice softening disagreement, acknowledging partial truth, and keeping the conversation respectful.

    By the end, you can…

    • report a claim I do not fully agree with using ...다고 해요 and ...
    • state my own view with 저는 ...다고 생각해요 and acknowledge a valid point with ...

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

Some people say all Koreans like kimchi.

    eo-tteon sa-ram-deul-eun han-guk sa-ram-deul-i mo-du kim-chi-reul jo-a-han-da-go hae-yo.

Reports a common claim neutrally. The ...다고 해요 ending marks it as hearsay, not your own assertion.

Some people say that, but I don't think it's necessarily so.

    geu-reo-ke mal-ha-neun sa-ram-deul-do it-ji-man, kkok geu-reo-chi-neun an-eun geot gat-a-yo.

A soft disagreement. 꼭 그렇지는 않다 literally means 'it is not exactly/necessarily so' and avoids a blunt no.

    Personally, I think that...

    jeo-neun gae-in-jeok-eu-ro ...da-go saeng-gak-hae-yo.

Marks the following clause as your personal opinion. 개인적으로 lowers the pressure of the claim.

There is a point to that criticism/observation.

    geu ji-jeok-e-neun il-ri-ga iss-eo-yo.

Acknowledges that the other side has a valid point before you add your own view. Useful for keeping the tone cooperative.

I admit that..., but I see... a bit differently.

    ...neun jeom-eun in-jeong-ha-ji-man, ...neun jeom-eun jom da-reu-ge bwa-yo.

A two-part frame: concede one point, then politely present a different view. Very common in discussion.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The hearsay pattern ...다고 해요 lets you report a claim without owning it: 어떤 사람들은 ... To add distance, use ...다는 의견도 있어요 ('there is also the opinion that...'). To give your own view, switch to ... The contrast between ...다고 해요 and ...다고 생각해요 is the key: the first is reported speech, the second is your stance.

    When to use it

Use these patterns in class discussions, workplace meetings, or friendly debates when the topic is sensitive. Start with a neutral report, then soften: 그렇게 말하는 사람들도 있지만, 저는 좀 다르게 봐요. If you want to concede, use ... Avoid direct negation like 아니에요, 그건 틀렸어요, which can sound confrontational in Korean conversation.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    Some people say all Koreans like kimchi.eo-tteon sa-ram-deul-eun han-guk sa-ram-deul-i mo-du kim-chi-reul jo-a-han-da-go hae-yo.
    B

    Some people say that, but I don't think it's necessarily so.geu-reo-ke mal-ha-neun sa-ram-deul-do it-ji-man, kkok geu-reo-chi-neun an-eun geot gat-a-yo.
    A

    There is a point to that. But looking at statistics, it is true that many people like kimchi.geu ji-jeok-e-neun il-ri-ga iss-eo-yo. geu-reon-de tong-gye-reul bo-myeon kim-chi-reul jo-a-ha-neun sa-ram-i ma-neun geon sa-sil-i-e-yo.
    B

    I admit that point, but we also need to consider that not everyone is like that.geu jeom-eun in-jeong-ha-ji-man, mo-deun sa-ram-i geu-reon geon a-ni-ra-neun jeom-do ga-chi bwa-ya hae-yo.

A little context goes a long way

In Korean discussion, direct disagreement can feel abrupt even among friends. Using ...다고 해요 to report a claim and ...다고 생각해요 to mark your own view keeps the exchange polite. Conceding with ...는 점은 인정해요 signals that you are listening, not just countering. Register matters: ...습니다 forms suit formal meetings, while ... 해요 fits everyday conversation.

    One thing to watch for

Using a blunt negation like 아니에요, 그건 틀렸어요 to reject a claim.

Try this instead: Soften with 꼭 그렇지는 않은 것 같아요 or 좀 다르게 봐요.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you report a claim without endorsing it?

    Show a sample answer

The ...다고 해요 ending marks reported speech, so you are not asserting it yourself. ...다는 의견도 있어요 is also valid when you want to frame it as one opinion among others.

2How do you acknowledge a valid point before disagreeing?

    Show a sample answer

Both concede a point politely. 일리가 있어요 is slightly more conversational; ...는 점은 인정해요 is more structured and works well in formal discussion.

3How do you state your own view after reporting others'?

    Show a sample answer

This clearly shifts from hearsay to your stance. 개인적으로 softens the claim; ...다고 생각해요 is the standard opinion pattern.

    Take this with you

Report claims with ...다고 해요, concede with ...는 점은 인정해요, and give your view with ... Soften disagreement with 꼭 그렇지는 않아요 or 좀 다르게 봐요.
