Korean for Intermediate Learners: Describing a Problem and Proposing a Solution

Learn Korean patterns to state a problem and offer solutions, using -는 게 문제예요, -(으)면 좋겠어요, and -는 게 좋을 것 같아요 in practical conversation.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

At intermediate level, you already know how to say what is wrong and why it happened. This lesson focuses on the next step: stating a problem clearly and proposing one or more solutions. In Korean, this often means using 문제예요 for the issue, -(으)면 좋겠어요 for a desired change, and -는 게 좋을 것 같아요 for a suggested action. You will also learn how to soften suggestions so they sound cooperative rather than commanding. The goal is not to list causes, but to move the conversation toward what can be done.

    By the end, you can…

    • state a problem clearly using 문제예요 and related expressions.
    • propose a solution using -(으)면 좋겠어요 and -는 게 좋을 것 같아요.
    • respond to someone else's suggested solution politely and naturally.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    가장 큰 문제는 교통이에요.

    The biggest problem is traffic.

    ga-jang keun mun-je-neun gyo-tong-i-e-yo

Use this to introduce the main issue in a discussion. 가장 큰 means 'biggest'; 문제는 marks the topic.

한 가지 해결책은 지하철을 이용하는 거예요.

One solution is to use the subway.

    han ga-ji hae-gyeol-chaek-eun ji-ha-cheol-eul i-yong-ha-neun geo-ye-yo

해결책 means 'solution.' The pattern -는 거예요 turns a verb phrase into a noun-like explanation.

    버스 노선을 늘리면 좋겠어요.

It would be good to increase bus routes.

    beo-seu no-seon-eul neul-li-myeon jo-ke-sseo-yo

-(으)면 좋겠어요 expresses a desired solution. It is softer than a direct command.

출퇴근 시간을 피하는 게 좋을 것 같아요.

I think it would be good to avoid rush hour.

    chul-toe-geun si-ga-neul pi-ha-neun ge jo-eul geot ga-ta-yo

-는 게 좋을 것 같아요 is a common way to give a gentle suggestion.

    그 방법도 괜찮은 것 같아요.

    That method also seems okay.

    geu bang-beop-do gwaen-chan-eun geot ga-ta-yo

Use this to accept someone else's solution without sounding overly enthusiastic or dismissive.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To describe a problem, use 문제는 ...예요/이에요. For example, 문제는 주차 공간이 부족하다는 거예요 means 'The problem is that parking space is insufficient.' To propose a solution, use -(으)면 좋겠어요: 주차장을 더 만들면 좋겠어요 means 'It would be good to build more parking lots.' Another useful pattern is -는 게 좋을 것 같아요: 대중교통을 이용하는 게 좋을 것 같아요 means 'I think it would be good to use public transportation.' These patterns let you move from problem to solution smoothly.

    When to use it

Use 문제예요 when you want to name the issue directly, especially in meetings or group discussions. Use -(으)면 좋겠어요 when you are expressing a wish or a preferred change, not a command. Use -는 게 좋을 것 같아요 when you want to suggest an action politely, often to someone of similar or higher status. For example, if a friend says the problem is noise, you can reply: 조용한 곳으로 이사하는 게 좋을 것 같아요. This sounds thoughtful rather than pushy.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

요즘 가장 큰 문제는 뭐라고 생각해요?

What do you think is the biggest problem these days?yo-jeum ga-jang keun mun-je-neun mwo-ra-go saeng-ga-kae-yo

교통 문제가 제일 심각한 것 같아요. 특히 출퇴근 시간에 너무 막혀요.

    I think the traffic problem is the most serious. Especially during rush hour, it's too congested.gyo-tong mun-je-ga je-il sim-ga-kan geot ga-ta-yo. teuk-hi chul-toe-geun si-ga-ne neo-mu ma-kyeo-yo

그럼 지하철 노선을 늘리면 좋겠어요. 아니면 버스 전용 차선을 만드는 것도 방법이에요.

    Then it would be good to increase subway lines. Or making bus-only lanes is also a method.geu-reom ji-ha-cheol no-seon-eul neul-li-myeon jo-ke-sseo-yo. a-ni-myeon beo-seu jeon-yong cha-seon-eul man-deu-neun geot-do bang-beo-bi-e-yo

맞아요. 하지만 예산이 부족해서 당장은 어려울 것 같아요.

Right. But because the budget is insufficient, it seems difficult right away.ma-ja-yo. ha-ji-man ye-san-i bu-jok-hae-seo dang-jang-eun eo-ryeo-ul geot ga-ta-yo

A little context goes a long way

In Korean conversation, direct commands such as 'Do this' can sound abrupt, especially with people you do not know well. Using -(으)면 좋겠어요 or -는 게 좋을 것 같아요 softens your suggestion and shows respect for the other person's opinion. In formal meetings, you may also hear -도록 하겠습니다 for commitments, but for proposing solutions, the softer patterns in this lesson are more appropriate.

    One thing to watch for

Using -아/어야 해요 to propose a solution, as in 버스를 타야 해요.

Try this instead: -아/어야 해요 means 'must' and sounds like a strong obligation or command. For a suggestion, use -는 게 좋을 것 같아요: 버스를 타는 게 좋을 것 같아요, meaning 'I think it would be good to take the bus.' This sounds cooperative rather than forceful.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you say 'The problem is that there are too many cars' in Korean?

    Show a sample answer

    문제는 차가 너무 많다는 거예요.

This uses 문제는 ...다는 거예요 to state the problem as a fact. You could also say 차가 너무 많은 게 문제예요, which is equally correct.

2Turn 'increase subway lines' into a polite suggestion using -(으)면 좋겠어요.

    Show a sample answer

    지하철 노선을 늘리면 좋겠어요.

This expresses a desired solution. If you want to sound more tentative, you can add 것 같아요: 늘리면 좋을 것 같아요.

3A friend suggests 'Let's reduce cars.' How would you respond that it seems okay?

    Show a sample answer

    그 방법도 괜찮은 것 같아요.

This accepts the suggestion politely without overcommitting. Other valid responses include 좋은 생각이에요 or 그렇게 하면 좋을 것 같아요.

    Take this with you

State the problem with 문제는 ...예요, then offer a solution with -(으)면 좋겠어요 or -는 게 좋을 것 같아요. These patterns keep your Korean polite, clear, and solution-focused.
