Korean for Intermediate Learners: Asking Sensitive Questions with Tact

Learn to soften personal questions in Korean with '괜찮다면', '혹시', and indirect endings so you can ask about boundaries without sounding intrusive.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.

At intermediate level, the challenge is not building questions but controlling how they land. Korean offers several grammatical and lexical softeners that signal 'I know this might be sensitive.' This lesson focuses on one core move: asking permission before asking, using 괜찮다면 and 혹시, then framing the real question indirectly. You will practice a short exchange about a coworker's absence and learn how to respect a refusal without pressing. The goal is not to avoid questions, but to make the other person feel they can decline without awkwardness.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask permission before asking a sensitive question using 괜찮다면 and 혹시.
    • frame a personal question indirectly with -는지 and -나 해서.
    • accept a refusal gracefully with 알겠어요 and 괜찮아요.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

If it's okay, may I ask just one thing?

    gwaenchanhdamyeon hanaman yeojjwobwado doelkkayo?

Use with someone older or in a formal workplace. 여쭤보다 is the humble form of 묻다. The literal meaning is 'if you are okay,' but it functions as a permission check.

If it's not rude, I have something I'd like to ask.

hoksi sillyega an doendamyeon yeojjwobol ge inneundeyo.

혹시 softens the approach; 실례가 안 된다면 is a set phrase meaning 'if it's not impolite.' The trailing -는데요 invites the listener to respond before you continue.

I was wondering if you've been very busy lately.

    yojeum mani bappeusinji gunggeumhaeseoyo.

Indirect question with -신지. It asks about someone's state without directly demanding an answer. 궁금해서요 means 'because I'm curious,' which explains why you are bringing it up.

If it's hard to answer, you don't have to.

    daphagi eoryeosimyeon an hasyeodo dwaeyo.

This explicitly gives the other person an exit. Use it after asking a sensitive question. 안 하셔도 돼요 is polite and clear.

Ah, I understand. Thank you for telling me.

    a, algesseoyo. malhae jusyeoseo gomawoyo.

Use when the person declines or gives a limited answer. It closes the topic without pressure and thanks them for their response.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is permission + indirect question. Start with 괜찮다면 or 혹시 실례가 안 된다면, then use a noun clause with -는지/-은지: 왜 그만두셨는지, 어디에 계신지, 요즘 어떻게 지내시는지. This turns a direct question into a reported wondering. Compare direct 그만뒀어요? ('Did you quit?') with indirect 왜 그만두셨는지 궁금해서요 ('I was wondering why you quit'). The indirect version is not vague; it is tactful. You can also add -나 해서 to explain your reason: 어디 아프신가 해서 여쭤봤어요 ('I asked because I wondered if you were sick').

    When to use it

Use these softeners when the topic involves health, money, relationships, work problems, or someone's absence. In Korean workplaces, 직접적인 질문 like 월급 얼마예요? can sound blunt even among colleagues. Instead, use 괜찮다면 여쭤봐도 될까요? and then ask indirectly: 연봉이 어느 정도인지 여쭤봐도 될까요? With friends, you can be less formal but still soften: 혹시 물어봐도 돼? and then ask. If the person says 어려울 것 같아요 or 나중에 얘기할게요, do not repeat the question. Respond with 알겠어요, 괜찮아요 and move on. That response is part of the skill.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Minsu, if it's okay, may I ask just one thing?Minsu ssi, gwaenchanhdamyeon hanaman yeojjwobwado doelkkayo?
    B

Yes, it's okay. What is it?ne, gwaenchanayo. mwondeyo?
    A

I haven't seen you at work lately, so I wondered if you were sick.yojeum hoesae an boisyeoseo eodi apeusin'ga haeseoyo.
    B

Ah, yes. I have something difficult going on. I'll talk about it later.a, ne. jom himdeun iri isseoseoyo. najunge yaegihalgeyo.
    A

I understand. Thank you for telling me. Talk when you're comfortable.algesseoyo. malhae jusyeoseo gomawoyo. pyeonhasil ttae yaegihae juseyo.

A little context goes a long way

Korean politeness often works by giving the other person room to decline. A softener like 괜찮다면 is not just decoration; it changes the social meaning of the question. In many Korean workplaces, asking a personal question directly can feel like pressure, while an indirect question with -는지 shows you are not demanding an answer. Age and hierarchy matter: use 여쭤보다 and -시- with superiors, and use 묻다 or 물어보다 with close friends. Refusals are often indirect, such as 좀 어려울 것 같아요 or 나중에요. Treat those as complete answers, not as invitations to ask again.

    One thing to watch for

Adding 괜찮다면 but then asking a direct, personal question: 괜찮다면 왜 그만뒀어요?

Try this instead: The softener should match an indirect question. The indirect -는지 form keeps the question from sounding like an interrogation.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1You want to ask an older coworker why they changed departments. Write one polite permission question and one indirect question.

    Show a sample answer

This works because 괜찮다면 checks permission first, and 궁금해서요 frames the question as your curiosity, not a demand. You could also say Both are polite; the first is slightly softer.

What should you say next?

    Show a sample answer

This accepts the boundary without pressing. 알겠어요 shows you understood, and 편하실 때 gives the other person control over timing. With a close friend, you could say 알겠어, 편할 때 말해 instead.

3Change this direct question into a tactful one: 어디 아파요?

    Show a sample answer

The indirect -신가 해서 form means 'I wondered if you were sick,' which is softer than a direct yes/no question. You can also say Both respect the other person's privacy while showing concern.

    Take this with you

Soften sensitive questions with 괜찮다면 or 혹시, ask indirectly with -는지/-신가 해서, and treat any refusal as a complete answer.
