    요즘 어떤 다이어트가 유행이에요?

What diet is popular these days?

    yojeum eotteon daieoteuga yuhaengieyo?

Use this to ask about current diet trends. '요즘' means 'these days', '유행' means 'trend' or 'fad'.

    저는 간헐적 단식을 해 봤어요.

    I tried intermittent fasting.

    jeoneun ganheoljeok dansigeul hae bwasseoyo.

Use this to share your experience with a diet. '해 봤어요' means 'have tried'.

    그 다이어트는 효과가 별로 없었어요.

    That diet wasn't very effective.

    geu daieoteuneun hyogwaga byeollo eopseosseoyo.

Use this to express that a diet didn't work well. '별로' means 'not particularly'.

    요즘 SNS에서 핫한 음식이 뭐예요?

What food is hot on social media these days?

    yojeum SNS-eseo hathan eumsigi mwoyeyo?

Use this to ask about trending foods on social media. '핫한' is a slang term meaning 'hot' or 'popular'.

저는 건강을 위해 채식 위주로 먹어요.

I eat mostly vegetarian for my health.

jeoneun geongangeul wihae chaesik wijuro meogeoyo.

Use this to explain your dietary choices. '채식' means 'vegetarian diet', '위주로' means 'mainly'.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To ask about trends, use '요즘 어떤 [noun]이/가 유행이에요?' For example, '요즘 어떤 다이어트가 유행이에요?' means 'What diet is trending these days?' You can replace '다이어트' with other nouns like '음식' (food) or '운동' (exercise). To answer, say '[noun]이/가 유행이에요.' For example, '간헐적 단식이 유행이에요.' (Intermittent fasting is trending.)

    When to use it

Use these phrases in casual conversations with friends or acquaintances. When discussing diets, it's common to share personal experiences using '해 봤어요' (have tried). To express opinions, use '별로' (not really) or '정말' (really). For example, '그 다이어트는 정말 효과가 좋았어요.' (That diet was really effective.) Be mindful that talking about dieting can be sensitive; avoid criticizing others' choices.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

간헐적 단식이 인기 많아요. 저도 해 봤는데, 효과가 좋았어요.

Intermittent fasting is very popular. I tried it too, and it was effective.ganheoljeok dansigi ingi manayo. jeodo hae bwanneunde, hyogwaga joasseoyo.

그래요? 저는 저탄수화물 다이어트를 해 봤는데, 별로였어요.

Really? I tried a low-carb diet, but it wasn't great.geuraeyo? jeoneun jeotansuhwamul daieoteureul hae bwanneunde, byeolloyeosseoyo.

그럴 수 있죠. 요즘은 SNS에서 핫한 음식도 많아요. 예를 들어, '탕후루'가 유행이에요.

That can happen. These days, there are many hot foods on social media. For example, 'tanghulu' is trending.geureol su itjyo. yojeumeun SNS-eseo hathan eumsikdo manayo. yeoreul deureo, 'tanghuru'ga yuhaengieyo.

A little context goes a long way

In Korea, diet and food trends spread quickly through social media and TV shows. While discussing diets is common, it's polite to avoid commenting on others' bodies. Use gentle language when sharing opinions, and remember that fad diets often fade quickly. Korean meals are typically shared, so individual dietary choices may require explanation.

    One thing to watch for

Using '다이어트를 하다' to mean 'to be on a diet' but forgetting the object marker '를'. For example, saying '다이어트 하다' instead of '다이어트를 하다'.

Try this instead: The correct form is '다이어트를 하다'. However, in casual speech, '다이어트 하다' is often used without the particle. For example, '저는 다이어트 중이에요.' (I'm on a diet.) is also correct.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you ask 'What food is trending these days?' in Korean?

    Show a sample answer

    요즘 어떤 음식이 유행이에요?

This uses the pattern '요즘 어떤 [noun]이/가 유행이에요?' with '음식' (food). Other nouns like '다이어트' or '운동' can also be used.

    2Translate: 'I tried a vegetarian diet.'

    Show a sample answer

    저는 채식 다이어트를 해 봤어요.

This uses '해 봤어요' to indicate past experience. '채식' means vegetarian, and '다이어트' can be omitted if context is clear: '저는 채식을 해 봤어요.'

3How would you say 'That diet wasn't very effective'?

    Show a sample answer

    그 다이어트는 효과가 별로 없었어요.

This uses '별로' to mean 'not particularly'. Alternatively, '그 다이어트는 효과가 없었어요.' means 'That diet had no effect.'

    Take this with you

When discussing fad diets in Korean, use '유행이에요' for trends, '해 봤어요' for experiences, and '별로' for negative opinions. Always be respectful and avoid commenting on others' bodies.
