Korean for Beginners: Talk About Music Preferences

Learn to express music preferences in Korean: say you love pop or are a big fan of jazz, and compare tastes with friends.

Two friends sharing an evening conversation

In this lesson, you will learn how to talk about music preferences in Korean. You will practice saying you love a genre, that you are a big fan of an artist, and how to ask friends about their tastes. We focus on the verb 좋아하다 (to like) and its stronger form 좋아하다's emphatic use with 정말/아주, and the phrase 팬이다 (to be a fan). You will also learn to use the particle 은/는 for contrast when comparing tastes. By the end, you can have a simple conversation about music.

    By the end, you can…

    • say I love a music genre in Korean.
    • say I am a big fan of a singer or band.
    • ask a friend about their music preferences.
    • compare my taste with a friend's using contrastive particles.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    나는 팝을 정말 좋아해.

    I really like pop.

    na-neun pap-eul jeong-mal jo-a-hae

Casual speech (반말) to a close friend. 나는 is the casual 'I'. The verb form 좋아해 is plain/casual, not 해요체.

    저는 재즈를 아주 좋아해요.

    I like jazz very much.

    jeo-neun jae-jeu-reul a-ju jo-a-hae-yo

Polite speech (해요체) to someone older or less familiar. 저는 is the polite 'I'.

    나는 BTS의 열렬한 팬이야.

I'm a big fan of BTS.

    na-neun BTS-ui yeol-lyeol-han paen-i-ya

Casual speech (반말) to a close friend. 열렬한 팬 means 'enthusiastic fan'. For polite, say 팬이에요.

    어떤 음악을 좋아해?

What kind of music do you like?

    eo-tteon eum-ak-eul jo-a-hae?

Casual question to a close friend. For polite, say 좋아해요?

    나는 록은 별로 안 좋아해.

    I don't really like rock.

    na-neun rok-eun byeol-lo an jo-a-hae

Casual speech (반말). 별로 안 means 'not really'. The particle 은 after 록 shows contrast with something else.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To express liking a music genre, use the pattern: [genre]을/를 좋아하다. The object particle 을/를 attaches to the genre. Use 을 after a consonant and 를 after a vowel. Example: 팝을 좋아해 (I like pop), 재즈를 좋아해 (I like jazz). To say 'really like', add 정말 or 아주 before 좋아하다: 팝을 정말 좋아해. To say 'I'm a big fan of [artist]', use [artist]의 열렬한 팬이다: BTS의 열렬한 팬이야. The copula 이다 appears as 이야 in casual speech (반말) and 이에요 in polite speech (해요체).

    When to use it

Use these expressions when chatting with friends about music. If you are talking to someone older or in a formal situation, use polite endings: 좋아해요 instead of 좋아해, and 팬이에요 instead of 팬이야. When comparing tastes, use the contrastive particle 은/는: 나는 팝은 좋아해, 재즈는 별로야 (I like pop, but jazz is not really my thing). The particle 은/는 highlights a contrast, similar to 'as for' in English. Remember that Korean does not use articles (a/an/the), so you say 팝을 좋아해, not 'a pop'.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    민수야, 어떤 음악을 좋아해?

Minsu, what kind of music do you like?min-su-ya, eo-tteon eum-ak-eul jo-a-hae?
    B

나는 재즈를 정말 좋아해. 특히 빌 에반스의 팬이야.

    I really like jazz. Especially, I'm a fan of Bill Evans.na-neun jae-jeu-reul jeong-mal jo-a-hae. teuk-hi Bil E-ban-seu-ui paen-i-ya.
    A

오, 그래? 나는 팝은 별로 안 좋아해. 록을 더 좋아해.

    Oh, really? I don't really like pop. I like rock more.o, geu-rae? na-neun pap-eun byeol-lo an jo-a-hae. rok-eul deo jo-a-hae.
    B

그렇구나. 그럼 좋아하는 록 밴드가 있어?

    I see. Then, do you have a rock band you like?geu-reo-ku-na. geu-reom jo-a-ha-neun rok baen-deu-ga i-sseo?

A little context goes a long way

In Korean, age and social hierarchy affect speech style. Use casual speech (반말) with close friends of similar age, and polite speech (존댓말) with acquaintances, older people, or in formal settings. When talking about music, it's common to use the English loanword '팬' (fan) and genre names like '팝' (pop), '재즈' (jazz), '록' (rock). However, some genres have native Korean terms, like '가요' for Korean pop music. It's also common to use the particle 은/는 to contrast tastes without sounding confrontational.

    One thing to watch for

Using the wrong particle: 나는 팝이 좋아해.

Try this instead: The verb 좋아하다 requires an object particle 을/를, not 이/가. The correct sentence is 나는 팝을 좋아해. The subject particle 이/가 is used with the adjective 좋다 (to be good/likeable): 팝이 좋아 (I like pop, literally 'pop is good'). So remember: 좋아하다 takes 을/를, 좋다 takes 이/가.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you say 'I really like K-pop' in casual speech (반말)?

    Show a sample answer

    나는 케이팝을 정말 좋아해.

This uses the object particle 을 after 케이팝 (which ends in a consonant) and the casual verb 좋아해. You could also say 나는 케이팝을 아주 좋아해. Both are correct.

2Translate to Korean: 'I'm a big fan of IU.' (polite)

    Show a sample answer

    저는 아이유의 열렬한 팬이에요.

Here, 저는 is the polite 'I', and the possessive particle 의 connects IU to 팬. The polite copula 이에요 is used. In casual speech, you could say 나는 아이유의 열렬한 팬이야.

3Ask a friend 'What kind of music do you like?' in casual Korean.

    Show a sample answer

    어떤 음악을 좋아해?

This is a casual question using the plain verb 좋아해. For polite, you would say 어떤 음악을 좋아해요? The word 어떤 means 'what kind of'.

    Take this with you

To talk about music preferences in Korean, use [genre]을/를 좋아하다 for liking, and [artist]의 열렬한 팬이다 for being a fan. Adjust speech level based on who you talk to, and use 은/는 to contrast tastes.
