Korean for Polite Collaborative Disagreement: Suggesting an Alternative to a Plan
Learn elementary Korean patterns to disagree with a suggestion politely and offer another option, using 제안 and -(으)ㄹ까요? with softeners like 좀 and 그런데.

In Korean conversation, disagreeing with a friend's or colleague's suggestion is usually done by acknowledging the idea first, then gently offering another option. This lesson teaches a small set of elementary patterns for that exact move: 그런데 (geureonde, "but/by the way"), maybe we could... expressed with -(으)ㄹ까요? (-(eu)lkkayo?), and the softener 좀 (jom). You will practice short, natural lines that keep the group's plan moving instead of shutting it down. The focus is collaborative disagreement about a suggestion, not general disagreement about facts or opinions.
By the end, you can…
- acknowledge a suggestion in Korean before disagreeing with it.
- offer an alternative plan politely using -(으)ㄹ까요? and 좀.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.
Checking available voices…
That's a good idea. But…
jo-eun saeng-ga-gi-e-yo. geu-reon-de…
Use this to accept the other person's idea first, then pause before giving your alternative. 그런데 softens the disagreement.
Could there be another way too?
da-reun bang-beop-do i-sseul-kka-yo?
A gentle question that invites other options without directly saying the first idea is wrong.
That might be a bit difficult.
geu-geon jom eo-ryeo-ul geot ga-ta-yo.
The softener 좀 makes the objection less blunt. Use it when you want to disagree mildly.
Then how about doing it this way?
geu-reom i-reo-ke ha-neun ge eo-ttae-yo?
A direct but friendly way to propose your alternative after hearing the first suggestion.
Shall we think about it once more?
u-ri da-si han-beon saeng-gak-hae bol-kka-yo?
Use this to slow the decision down and keep the discussion collaborative.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The core pattern is -(으)ㄹ까요? (-(eu)lkkayo?), which turns a verb into a gentle suggestion question: 우리 내일 할까요? (uri naeil halkkayo?, "Shall we do it tomorrow?"). To disagree collaboratively, first acknowledge with 좋은 생각이에요 (jo-eun saeng-ga-gi-e-yo), then add 그런데 (geureonde) and your alternative: 그런데 우리 오늘 할까요? (geureonde uri oneul halkkayo?, "But shall we do it today?"). The word 좀 (jom) softens a negative comment: 그건 좀 어려울 것 같아요 (geugeon jom eoryeoul geot gatayo, "That might be a bit difficult").
When to use it
Use this style when you are working with others on a plan, such as choosing a time, place, or method. It is not for arguing about facts. For example, if a friend says (uri to-yo-ir-e man-nal-kka-yo?, "Shall we meet on Saturday?"), you can reply (jo-eun saeng-ga-gi-e-yo. geureonde jeo-neun to-yo-ir-e jom bappayo. il-yo-ir-eun eottaeyo?, "Good idea. But I'm a bit busy on Saturday. How about Sunday?"). This keeps the suggestion alive while changing one detail.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
Shall we watch a movie this weekend?u-ri i-beon ju-mal-e yeong-hwa bol-kka-yo?
Good idea. But Saturday is a bit difficult for me.jo-eun saeng-ga-gi-e-yo. geu-reon-de jeo-neun to-yo-ir-i jom eo-ryeo-wo-yo.
Then how about Sunday?geu-reom il-yo-ir-eun eo-ttae-yo?
Sunday is good. Then shall we meet on Sunday afternoon?il-yo-ir jo-a-yo. geu-reom il-yo-ir o-hu-e man-nal-kka-yo?A little context goes a long way
In Korean, a direct "no" to a suggestion can sound abrupt, especially with people you do not know well. Acknowledging the idea first with 좋은 생각이에요 and then adding 그런데 is a common way to keep harmony. Among close friends, shorter forms like 그건 좀… (geugeon jom…) are also fine, but in work or school settings, fuller polite endings such as -요 (-yo) are safer.
One thing to watch for
Saying 아니에요, 그거 싫어요 (a-ni-e-yo, geu-geo si-reo-yo, "No, I don't like that") as a first response to a suggestion.
Try this instead: This sounds blunt and can end the discussion. Instead, acknowledge first and offer an alternative: 좋은 생각이에요. 그런데 저는 다른 방법이 더 좋을 것 같아요 (jo-eun saeng-ga-gi-e-yo. geu-reon-de jeo-neun da-reun bang-beop-i deo jo-eul geot ga-ta-yo, "Good idea. But I think another way might be better").
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1Your friend suggests meeting at 7 p.m. You prefer 8 p.m. Write one polite Korean line that acknowledges the idea and offers 8 p.m.
Show a sample answer
This works because 좋은 생각이에요 accepts the suggestion first, and 8시는 어때요? offers the alternative as a question. You could also say 8시에 만날까요? (8-si-e man-nal-kka-yo?), which is equally polite.
2Which word softens a negative comment in 그건 좀 어려울 것 같아요?
Show a sample answer
좀
좀 makes the objection sound milder and less direct. Removing it, 그건 어려울 것 같아요, is still polite but firmer; adding 좀 is common in collaborative disagreement.
3Turn 우리 내일 할까요? into a suggestion to do it today instead, using 그런데.
Show a sample answer
그런데 introduces the shift, and 오늘 replaces 내일 while keeping the -(으)ㄹ까요? suggestion pattern. You could also say 그런데 오늘은 어때요? with the same collaborative effect.
Disagree with a suggestion in Korean by acknowledging it first, then using 그런데 plus a soft alternative question like -(으)ㄹ까요? or 어때요?.
