Korean for Intermediate Learners: Giving Detailed Feedback on a Meal
Learn to review a meal in Korean: describe dishes, balance flavours, and give polite, detailed feedback without sending food back.

When you eat out in Korea, you often want to tell someone how the meal was, not just complain about one dish. This lesson teaches you to give a detailed review of a meal in Korean. You will learn set phrases for describing taste, texture, and overall satisfaction, and you will practise a polite pattern for softening negative comments. The focus is on overall feedback, not on sending food back to the kitchen. By the end, you will be able to say what you liked, what was less successful, and whether you would return, using natural intermediate-level Korean.
By the end, you can…
- describe the overall taste and quality of a meal in Korean.
- give balanced feedback by mentioning both strengths and weaknesses politely.
- use the pattern -기는 했지만 to contrast two aspects of a dish.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The pattern -기는 했지만 means 'it was indeed ..., but ...'. It lets you admit a positive or negative point before adding a contrasting one. For example: 맛있기는 했지만 조금 짰어요 (It was tasty, but a bit salty). Another example: 친절하기는 했지만 음식이 늦게 나왔어요 (The service was friendly, but the food came out late). This pattern is useful for detailed feedback because it shows you noticed both sides. You can also use -긴 했지만 in casual speech.
When to use it
Use these phrases after you have finished eating, when a server asks 어떻게 드셨어요? (How was your meal?) or when you are writing a review. Keep the tone polite with -요 endings. If you are with close friends, you can drop -요 and say 맛있었어 or 좀 짰어. For a negative point, soften it with 좀 (a bit) or 조금 (a little): 좀 짰어요 is much gentler than 너무 짰어요. Avoid blunt statements like 별로였어요 (It wasn't great) unless you are with close friends or intentionally giving a strong review.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
오늘 식사 어떻게 드셨어요?

The food was a bit salty, but the rest was fine. The portion was small, so it was a bit disappointing.eumsigi jom jjatjiman nameojineun gwaenchanasseoyo. yangi jeogeoseo jogeum aswiwosseoyo.A little context goes a long way
In Korean restaurants, feedback is often given indirectly. Saying 맛있게 잘 먹었습니다 (I ate well) as you leave is a common polite closing, even if the meal was not perfect. Detailed negative feedback is usually reserved for online reviews or when the server explicitly asks. Using 아쉬웠어요 rather than 맛없었어요 keeps the tone respectful and avoids sounding confrontational.
One thing to watch for
Using 너무 짰어요 (too salty) as a mild complaint.
Try this instead: 너무 is strong and can sound like a serious criticism. For a balanced review, use 좀 짰어요 or 조금 짰어요. Example: 음식이 좀 짰지만 나머지는 괜찮았어요.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How would you say 'Overall, I was satisfied' in Korean?
Show a sample answer
전반적으로 만족스러웠어요.
This phrase uses 전반적으로 (overall) and 만족스러웠어요 (was satisfied). It is a polite, neutral opening for a review. You could also say 전체적으로 만족했어요, which is slightly more casual.
2Make a balanced sentence: the food was tasty, but the portion was small.
Show a sample answer
맛있기는 했지만 양이 적었어요.
The pattern -기는 했지만 contrasts the positive taste with the negative portion size. You could also say 맛있었지만 양이 적었어요, which is simpler but less emphatic.
3What is a polite way to say you were a bit disappointed with the portion?
Show a sample answer
양이 적어서 조금 아쉬웠어요.
Using 조금 (a little) and 아쉬웠어요 (was disappointing) softens the criticism. You could also say 양이 좀 적었어요, which focuses on the fact rather than your feeling.
Give balanced feedback with -기는 했지만 and soften negatives with 좀 or 조금. End with a polite phrase like 잘 먹었습니다 to leave a good impression.
