Comparing Cultural Values in Korean: Individualism, Collectivism, and 우선 (useon)

Learn to discuss how cultural values like family, individual choice, and group harmony are prioritized in Korean, using the key pattern A보다 B를 더 우선하다 and related expressions.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

When Korean speakers compare cultural values, they rarely say one culture is simply better. Instead, they describe what is prioritized (우선하다, useonhada) in a given situation. This lesson teaches you to compare values such as individualism (개인주의, gaeinjuui) and collectivism (집단주의, jipdanjuui), and to say things like 'In some cultures, family comes first.' You will learn the pattern A보다 B를 더 우선하다, the difference between 우선하다 and 먼저, and how to soften comparisons with -는 편이다. The focus is on values, not stereotypes, so you can discuss cultural differences accurately and politely in intermediate Korean.

    By the end, you can…

    • compare two cultural values using A보다 B를 더 우선하다.
    • describe what a culture tends to prioritize using -는 편이다.
    • discuss individualism and collectivism without making absolute claims.
    • ask and answer questions about family, group harmony, and personal choice in Korean.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    어떤 문화에서는 가족이 먼저예요.

In some cultures, family comes first.

    eo-tteon mun-hwa-e-seo-neun ga-jo-gi meon-jeo-ye-yo

A natural, neutral way to introduce a cultural value. 먼저 here means 'first in priority,' not 'first in time.'

한국 문화는 집단의 조화를 더 우선하는 편이에요.

Korean culture tends to prioritize group harmony more.

    han-guk mun-hwa-neun jip-dan-ui jo-hwa-reul deo u-seon-ha-neun pyeon-i-e-yo

-는 편이다 softens the claim to 'tends to,' which is important when discussing culture.

    개인주의와 집단주의를 비교해 볼까요?

Shall we compare individualism and collectivism?

    gae-in-ju-ui-wa jip-dan-ju-ui-reul bi-gyo-hae bol-kka-yo

A polite suggestion using -(으)ㄹ까요? Useful for starting a discussion in class or with friends.

    저는 개인의 선택도 중요하다고 생각해요.

I think individual choice is important too.

    jeo-neun gae-in-ui seon-tae-do jung-yo-ha-da-go saeng-ga-kae-yo

Adding 도 ('also/too') lets you acknowledge another value without rejecting the first.

가족을 우선하는 게 항상 옳은 건 아니에요.

Prioritizing family is not always the right thing.

    ga-jo-geul u-seon-ha-neun ge hang-sang ol-eun geon a-ni-e-yo

    A careful way to add nuance. -는 게 … 건 아니에요 means 'doing X is not necessarily…'

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is A보다 B를 더 우선하다: 'to prioritize B more than A.' For example, 어떤 문화에서는 개인보다 가족을 더 우선해요 (In some cultures, people prioritize family more than the individual). You can also use 우선순위를 두다: 가족에게 우선순위를 둬요 (They put priority on family). To avoid sounding absolute, add -는 편이다: 집단을 우선하는 편이에요 (They tend to prioritize the group). Remember that 우선하다 is a verb meaning 'to give priority,' while 먼저 is an adverb meaning 'first' in order or time.

    When to use it

Use these expressions when comparing values in a discussion, presentation, or friendly conversation. They are appropriate in intermediate polite speech (해요체). For example, you might say 한국에서는 나이에 따라 말을 높이는 문화를 중요하게 생각하는 편이에요 (In Korea, people tend to consider the culture of using honorifics according to age important). When you want to disagree gently, use -다고 생각해요: 저는 조금 다르게 생각해요 (I think a little differently). Avoid sweeping statements like 모든 한국 사람은 집단주의자예요 (All Koreans are collectivists), which are inaccurate and can sound stereotyping.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

어떤 문화에서는 가족이 먼저라고 들었어요. 정말 그런가요?

    I heard that in some cultures, family comes first. Is that really true?eo-tteon mun-hwa-e-seo-neun ga-jo-gi meon-jeo-ra-go deu-reo-sseo-yo. jeong-mal geu-reon-ga-yo?
    B

네, 많은 문화에서 가족을 중요하게 생각해요. 하지만 개인의 선택도 점점 중요해지고 있어요.

    Yes, many cultures consider family important. But individual choice is also becoming more important.ne, ma-neun mun-hwa-e-seo ga-jo-geul jung-yo-ha-ge saeng-ga-kae-yo. ha-ji-man gae-in-ui seon-tae-do jeom-jeom jung-yo-hae-ji-go i-sseo-yo.
    A

그럼 집단주의와 개인주의를 어떻게 비교할 수 있을까요?

    Then how can we compare collectivism and individualism?geu-reom jip-dan-ju-ui-wa gae-in-ju-ui-reul eo-tteo-ke bi-gyo-hal su i-sseul-kka-yo?
    B

상황에 따라 달라요. 회사에서는 집단을, 집에서는 개인을 더 우선하는 편이에요.

It depends on the situation. At work, people tend to prioritize the group; at home, the individual.sang-hwang-e tta-ra dal-la-yo. hoe-sa-e-seo-neun jip-dan-eul, jip-e-seo-neun gae-in-eul deo u-seon-ha-neun pyeon-i-e-yo.

A little context goes a long way

In Korean conversation, 직접적으로 '한국은 집단주의예요'라고 단정하기보다 '-는 편이에요'나 '상황에 따라 달라요'를 쓰면 더 자연스럽고 예의 바릅니다. Also, Koreans often use we/our (우리) for shared groups such as 우리 회사, 우리 가족. This is a linguistic habit of group reference, not proof that every individual always puts the group first. Treat values as tendencies, not fixed rules.

    One thing to watch for

Using 먼저 to mean 'priority' in a value comparison, as in 가족이 먼저 우선해요.

Try this instead: 먼저 means 'first' in time or order, so it does not combine naturally with 우선하다. Say 가족을 우선해요 or 가족이 먼저예요. For a comparison, use 가족을 더 우선하는 편이에요.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you say 'In some cultures, people prioritize the group more than the individual' using A보다 B를 더 우선하다?

    Show a sample answer

어떤 문화에서는 개인보다 집단을 더 우선해요.

This uses the pattern 개인보다 집단을 더 우선하다 correctly. You could also say 집단을 더 우선하는 편이에요 to soften it; both are valid.

2What is the difference between 우선하다 and 먼저?

    Show a sample answer

우선하다 is a verb meaning 'to give priority,' while 먼저 is an adverb meaning 'first' in time or order.

우선하다 takes an object, e.g. 가족을 우선하다. 먼저 describes sequence, e.g. 가족이 먼저 도착했어요. They are not interchangeable.

3Rewrite this absolute claim to sound more nuanced: 한국 사람은 모두 집단주의자예요.

    Show a sample answer

한국 사람들은 집단을 중요하게 생각하는 편이에요.

Adding -는 편이다 and plural people makes the statement a tendency rather than a stereotype. Other valid answers include 상황에 따라 집단을 우선하기도 해요.

    Take this with you

Compare values with A보다 B를 더 우선하다, soften claims with -는 편이다, and remember that cultural values are tendencies shaped by situation, not fixed labels for every person.
