Korean Karaoke: Choose the Right Song Version (Original vs. Remake)
Learn to ask for the original or a remake in Korean coin karaoke, and how to request a different version when the wrong one plays.

In Korean coin karaoke, the same song title often appears in multiple versions: the original release, a remake by another artist, or a live/concert cut. If you just type the title, the machine may queue the wrong one. This lesson gives you casual Korean phrases to check whether a track is the original, ask for a different version, and fix the mistake with staff without needing to know the catalog policy. You will practice the words 버전 (version), 원곡 (original song), and 리메이크 (remake), and two patterns: 이거 원곡이야? and 다른 버전으로 틀어줘. Keep your tone casual with friends, and switch to polite speech with staff.
By the end, you can…
- ask whether a song is the original version using 이거 원곡이야?
- request a different version with 다른 버전으로 틀어줘.
- recognize and use 버전, 원곡, and 리메이크 in a karaoke setting.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.
Checking available voices…
이거 원곡이야?
Is this the original version?
i-geo won-gok-i-ya?
Casual question to a friend when you are not sure which version is queued.
다른 버전으로 틀어줘.
Play a different version, please.
da-reun beo-jeon-eu-ro teu-reo-jwo.
Casual request to change the version; 틀어줘 is common for playing a song.
리메이크 버전 있어?
Is there a remake version?
ri-me-i-keu beo-jeon i-sseo?
Ask if the catalog has a remake; use with friends or staff.
원곡으로 다시 틀어줘.
Play the original again, please.
won-gok-eu-ro da-si teu-reo-jwo.
Use when a remake played but you want the original.
이 노래 원곡 누구야?
Who is the original singer of this song?
i no-rae won-gok nu-gu-ya?
Casual way to check the original artist; useful when multiple versions exist.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
Use 이거 원곡이야? to check the version before or while a song plays. 이거 means 'this one', 원곡 means 'original song', and 이야? is the casual question ending. If you want to ask about a remake, swap 원곡 for 리메이크: 이거 리메이크야? (Is this a remake?). To request a change, use 다른 버전으로 틀어줘. 다른 means 'different', 버전 means 'version', 으로 marks the choice, and 틀어줘 means 'play it for me'. You can also say 원곡으로 틀어줘 (play the original) or 리메이크로 틀어줘 (play the remake). These are casual; with staff, use 틀어주세요 instead of 틀어줘.
When to use it
Use these phrases when the machine plays a version you did not expect. If a friend queued the song, ask 이거 원곡이야? before you start singing. If the wrong version is already playing, say 다른 버전으로 틀어줘 to the friend at the machine, or to staff if you need help. If you are not sure whether a remake exists, ask 리메이크 버전 있어? When you want to know the original artist, ask 이 노래 원곡 누구야? Keep your tone casual with friends; switch to polite speech with staff, for example 이거 원곡이에요? and 다른 버전으로 틀어주세요.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
이거 원곡이야?
Is this the original version?i-geo won-gok-i-ya?아니, 리메이크야. 다른 버전으로 틀어줘?
No, it's a remake. Should I play a different version?a-ni, ri-me-i-keu-ya. da-reun beo-jeon-eu-ro teu-reo-jwo?응, 원곡으로 다시 틀어줘.
Yeah, play the original again, please.eung, won-gok-eu-ro da-si teu-reo-jwo.알겠어. 원곡으로 바꿨어.
Got it. I changed it to the original.al-get-eo. won-gok-eu-ro ba-ggwo-sseo.A little context goes a long way
In Korean coin karaoke, the same title can appear as 원곡 (original), 리메이크 (remake), or live versions. Catalog numbers and labels vary by machine and update, so check the screen or ask staff rather than assuming a version is always available. With friends, casual speech is normal; with staff, use polite endings like -이에요? and -주세요. If you are unsure, pointing at the screen and saying 이거 원곡이에요? is clear and polite.
One thing to watch for
Using 틀어줘 with staff or strangers.
Try this instead: 틀어줘 is casual and can sound rude to staff. Use 틀어주세요 for polite requests: 다른 버전으로 틀어주세요. With friends, 틀어줘 is fine: 다른 버전으로 틀어줘.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1You want to know if the queued song is the original. What do you say casually?
Show a sample answer
이거 원곡이야?
This uses 이거 (this), 원곡 (original song), and the casual question ending 이야?. A polite alternative is 이거 원곡이에요?
2A remake is playing, but you want the original. What do you say to a friend?
Show a sample answer
원곡으로 다시 틀어줘.
원곡으로 means 'to the original', 다시 means 'again', and 틀어줘 is casual 'play it'. You could also say 다른 버전으로 틀어줘 if you just want a different version.
3You want to ask if a remake version exists. What do you say?
Show a sample answer
리메이크 버전 있어?
리메이크 버전 means 'remake version', and 있어? asks if it exists. A polite version is 리메이크 버전 있어요?
Check the version with 이거 원곡이야? and change it with 다른 버전으로 틀어줘. Keep 틀어줘 for friends and use 틀어주세요 with staff.
