The most common compliment for food. Use it while eating or right after the first bite. The literal meaning is 'It has taste.'
정말 맛있어요.

jeong-mal ma-sit-sseo-yo
Add 정말 to make the compliment stronger. Use it when you want to sound especially enthusiastic.
잘 먹었습니다.
Thank you for the meal. / I ate well.
jal meo-geot-sseum-ni-da
Said after finishing a meal to thank the host. The -습니다 ending is formal polite, good for adults you do not know well.

Use when you arrive or when you leave. It thanks the host for the invitation itself, not just the food.

The pattern 잘 + verb + 주셔서 감사합니다 means 'Thank you for doing [verb] well for me.' 잘 먹었습니다 uses the same idea: 잘 means 'well,' and 먹었습니다 means 'I ate.' Together they thank the host for the meal. You can swap the verb: 잘 대접해 주셔서 감사합니다 thanks the host for hospitality. 초대해 주셔서 감사합니다 thanks the host for inviting you. The ending -주셔서 is polite because -시- honors the person who did the action.
When to use it
Use 맛있어요 during the meal, after the first bite or when the host asks how the food is. Use 잘 먹었습니다 after you finish eating, before you leave the table. Use 초대해 주셔서 감사합니다 when you arrive or when you say goodbye. Use 잘 대접해 주셔서 감사합니다 when leaving, especially if the host prepared many dishes. With close friends, you can shorten to 잘 먹었어, but with hosts you do not know well, keep the polite -습니다 form.

Korean hosts often say 별거 아니에요 ('It's nothing special') even after cooking a large meal. This is modesty, not a sign that the food is actually simple. A sincere compliment such as 정말 맛있어요 is welcome and expected. Use the polite -습니다 forms with hosts who are older or less familiar; with close friends, casual forms like 잘 먹었어 are fine.
One thing to watch for
Saying 맛있어요 to mean 'I am delicious.'
Try this instead: 맛있어요 describes the food, not you. To say you are delicious would be different and strange. Say 이 음식이 맛있어요 ('This food is delicious') or simply 맛있어요 while looking at the food. If you want to say 'I eat well,' use 잘 먹어요.
