Korean for Elementary Learners: Asking Someone to Share a Recipe
Learn to ask for a recipe in Korean with 레시피 좀 주시겠어요? and related polite requests for written or shared cooking instructions.

When you want to cook a dish at home, you often need the recipe itself, not just a quick explanation of how to cook it. In Korean, asking for a recipe is usually done with the word 레시피 (resipi), which comes from English, or with the native Korean word 조리법 (joribeop), meaning cooking method. The key phrase in this lesson is 레시피 좀 주시겠어요? It means Can you give me the recipe? This is different from asking 어떻게 요리해요? (eodeoke yorihaeyo?), which means How do you cook it? That question asks for a demonstration or explanation. Asking for a recipe focuses on written or shared instructions you can keep, copy, or follow later. In this lesson, you will learn polite phrases for requesting a recipe, how to ask someone to send or write it down, and how to respond when you receive it.
By the end, you can…
- ask someone politely to give me a recipe in Korean.
- ask for a recipe to be sent, written down, or shared.
- understand and respond to a simple recipe request in Korean.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

레시피 좀 주시겠어요?
Can you give me the recipe?
re-si-pi jom ju-si-ge-sseo-yo
The main phrase for this lesson. 좀 makes the request softer and more polite. 주시겠어요? is a polite way to ask someone to give something.
조리법을 알려 주시겠어요?
Can you tell me the cooking method?
jo-ri-beo-beul al-lyeo ju-si-ge-sseo-yo
Use 조리법 instead of 레시피 when you want a more Korean or formal word for recipe or cooking method.
레시피를 보내 주시겠어요?
Can you send me the recipe?
re-si-pi-reul bo-nae ju-si-ge-sseo-yo
Use this when you want the recipe by message, email, or another written form.
레시피를 적어 주시겠어요?
Can you write down the recipe for me?
re-si-pi-reul jeo-geo ju-si-ge-sseo-yo
적다 means to write down. This is useful when you want the recipe on paper or in a note.
레시피를 공유해 주시겠어요?
Can you share the recipe?
re-si-pi-reul gong-yu-hae ju-si-ge-sseo-yo
공유하다 means to share. This fits online recipes, links, or files.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The pattern noun + 좀 주시겠어요? is a polite request for an object or information. 레시피 좀 주시겠어요? literally means Will you please give me the recipe? You can replace 레시피 with other nouns, for example 물 좀 주시겠어요? (mul jom ju-si-ge-sseo-yo, Can you give me some water?) or 메뉴 좀 주시겠어요? (menyu jom ju-si-ge-sseo-yo, Can you give me the menu?). The particle 을/를 marks the object when you use a verb like 보내다 (bonae-da, to send) or 적다 (jeok-da, to write down). So you can say 레시피를 보내 주시겠어요? or 레시피를 적어 주시겠어요? The helper verb 주다 (ju-da, to give) adds the meaning of doing something for someone.
When to use it
Use 레시피 좀 주시겠어요? when you are speaking to someone you do not know well, an older person, or someone you want to treat politely. It is safe in most everyday situations, such as asking a friend's parent, a coworker, or a server at a restaurant. If you are close to the person, you can use a less formal style: 레시피 좀 줄래? (re-si-pi jom jul-lae) or 레시피 좀 줘 (re-si-pi jom jwo). However, these are only for friends or people clearly younger than you. When you want a written copy, say 레시피를 적어 주시겠어요? When you want it sent digitally, say 레시피를 보내 주시겠어요? If you just want to know the cooking process, use 어떻게 요리해요? instead.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
저기요, 이 김치찌개 정말 맛있어요. 레시피 좀 주시겠어요?
Excuse me, this kimchi stew is really delicious. Can you give me the recipe?jeo-gi-yo, i gim-chi-jji-gae jeong-mal ma-si-sseo-yo. re-si-pi jom ju-si-ge-sseo-yo네, 물론이죠. 레시피를 보내 드릴까요?
Yes, of course. Shall I send you the recipe?ne, mul-ron-i-jyo. re-si-pi-reul bo-nae deu-ril-kka-yo네, 문자로 보내 주시겠어요?
Yes, can you send it by text message?ne, mun-ja-ro bo-nae ju-si-ge-sseo-yo알겠어요. 재료랑 양념도 같이 적어 드릴게요.
Okay. I will write down the ingredients and seasonings for you too.al-ge-sseo-yo. jae-ryo-rang yang-nyeom-do ga-chi jeo-geo deu-ril-ge-yoA little context goes a long way
In Korean, asking for a recipe is often a compliment because it shows you liked the food. Using 주시겠어요? keeps the request polite and respectful. If someone offers to send the recipe, you can accept with 네, 감사합니다 (ne, gamsahamnida). When you receive it, a short 잘 받았어요 (jal badasseoyo, I received it well) is a friendly way to confirm.
One thing to watch for
Using 레시피를 주세요? as a direct translation of Can you give me the recipe?
Try this instead: 주세요 is a polite request, but it can sound like an order. For asking a favor, use 레시피 좀 주시겠어요? The word 좀 softens the request, and 주시겠어요? asks whether the other person is willing to give it.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you politely ask someone to give you the recipe?
Show a sample answer
레시피 좀 주시겠어요?
This uses 레시피 (recipe), 좀 (please, softening), and 주시겠어요? (would you give). It is polite and natural. 레시피를 주시겠어요? is also acceptable, but 좀 makes it sound friendlier.
2You want the recipe sent to you by message. What can you say?
Show a sample answer
레시피를 보내 주시겠어요?
보내 주시겠어요? means can you send it for me? You can add 문자로 (mun-ja-ro, by text) to be more specific: 문자로 보내 주시겠어요?
3What is the difference between 레시피 좀 주시겠어요? and 어떻게 요리해요?
Show a sample answer
레시피 좀 주시겠어요? asks for the recipe itself, often written or shared. 어떻게 요리해요? asks how to cook it, usually for an explanation.
The first focuses on getting instructions you can keep or follow. The second focuses on the cooking process. Both are useful, but they are not the same request.
Use 레시피 좀 주시겠어요? to politely ask for a recipe, and add 보내 주시겠어요? or 적어 주시겠어요? when you want it sent or written down.
