Includes practice questions and sample answers.

If you need help in Korea, the most useful question you can ask is where the police station is. In this lesson you will learn the standard polite question 경찰서가 어디예요? (gyeongchalseoga eodiyeyo?), plus a few direction words so you can understand the answer. Korean does not use articles like "the," and the polite -요 ending is your safest choice with strangers. You will also learn how to say you are lost and how to thank someone after they point the way. All phrases use Hangul with Revised Romanization so you can read and say them confidently.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask where the police station is in polite Korean.
    • understand and use basic direction words like 왼쪽, 오른쪽, and 직진.
    • say I am lost and ask someone to speak slowly.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    경찰서가 어디예요?

    Where is the police station?

    gyeong-chal-seo-ga eo-di-ye-yo

The standard polite question. Use it with strangers, shop staff, or passersby.

    경찰서를 찾고 있어요.

I am looking for the police station.

    gyeong-chal-seo-reul chat-go i-sseo-yo

Useful when you want to explain your situation before asking for directions.

    길을 잃었어요.

    I am lost.

    gi-reul i-reo-sseo-yo

Say this first if you are clearly lost; it signals you need help.

    왼쪽으로 가세요.

    Go to the left.

    oen-jjok-eu-ro ga-se-yo

A common direction you may hear. 오른쪽으로 가세요 means go to the right.

    여기에서 가까워요?

    Is it close to here?

    yeo-gi-e-seo ga-kka-wo-yo

Ask this to find out whether you should walk or take a taxi.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is [place] + 가 어디예요? For example, 경찰서가 어디예요? means "Where is the police station?" The particle 가 marks the place as the subject. If the place ends in a vowel, use 가; if it ends in a consonant, use 이. You can swap in other places: 화장실이 어디예요? (Where is the restroom?) or 역이 어디예요? (Where is the station?). The -요 ending keeps the question polite without being formal.

    When to use it

Use 경찰서가 어디예요? when you are speaking to a stranger, a store employee, or anyone you do not know well. If you are reporting a crime or a serious problem, say 경찰에 신고하고 싶어요 (I want to report it to the police). For simple directions, listen for 왼쪽 (left), 오른쪽 (right), and 직진 (straight). If the answer is too fast, say 천천히 말해 주세요 (Please speak slowly).

A little context goes a long way

Korean politeness often depends on the -요 ending and a brief 실례합니다 (excuse me) before a question. With police officers, use polite speech and avoid casual forms like 어디야. If you are not sure whether someone is an officer, ask 경찰관이세요? (Are you a police officer?) rather than assuming.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 경찰서 어디야? to a stranger.

Try this instead: 어디야 is casual and can sound rude to strangers. Use the polite form 경찰서가 어디예요? with the -요 ending. If you need to be more formal, say 경찰서가 어디입니까?

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask "Where is the police station?" politely?

    Show a sample answer

    경찰서가 어디예요?

This uses the place 경찰서, the subject particle 가, and the polite question ending -요. 경찰서가 어디입니까? is also correct in more formal situations.

2What should you say if you are lost?

    Show a sample answer

    길을 잃었어요.

This means "I am lost." You can add 실례합니다 before it. Another natural option is 길을 잃어버렸어요, which has a similar meaning.

    3What does 직진 mean?

    Show a sample answer

    Go straight.

직진 is a common direction word. You may also hear 쭉 가세요, which means "go straight ahead" in everyday speech.

    Take this with you

Remember the polite question 경찰서가 어디예요? and the key direction words 왼쪽, 오른쪽, and 직진. If you do not understand, ask 천천히 말해 주세요.
