To ask about age, use 나이가 어떻게 되세요? or, for elders, 연세가 어떻게 되세요? The verb 되세요 is honorific. For job, 직업이 뭐예요? is straightforward. For nationality, 어느 나라 사람이에요? literally means 'which country person are you?' You can also ask 어디에서 왔어요? (Where are you from?). To make questions open-ended, use 뭐예요? (what is?) or 어떻게 (how). For example, 주말에 뭐 해요? (What do you do on weekends?) invites a longer answer than a yes/no question.
When to use it
Age questions are common in Korea but can be sensitive. Use 나이 with peers or younger people after some rapport; use 연세 for elders. Job questions are fine in most social settings. Nationality questions are neutral and show interest. Avoid asking age as the very first question; start with nationality or job. In Korean culture, age is often asked to determine the right speech level and terms of address. It's not considered rude if asked politely after some introduction. Using 연세 for elders shows respect. Also, when asking about nationality, 어느 나라 사람이에요? is neutral; avoid assuming someone is Korean based on appearance.
