How to Ask When Check-Out Is in Korean

Learn to ask 'What time is check-out?' in Korean, understand check-out policies, and use polite hotel phrases that pair with check-in questions.

Friends planning a trip around a map in a warmly lit café

When you stay at a hotel or guesthouse in Korea, the front desk will often tell you the check-out time at check-in, but it is still useful to ask yourself. In this lesson you will learn the key noun 체크아웃 (chekeuaut), meaning 'check-out', and build simple polite questions around it. You will also learn how to ask about late check-out and where to return your key. The phrases use the polite -이에요/예요 ending and the question word 몇 시 (myeot si), 'what time', so they are safe in most hotel situations.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask 'What time is check-out?' in polite Korean.
    • understand and answer a simple question about check-out time.
    • ask whether late check-out is possible.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    체크아웃이 몇 시예요?

    What time is check-out?

    che-keu-a-ut-i myeot si-ye-yo?

The most direct and common way to ask at a hotel front desk. 체크아웃 ends in a consonant, so use 이 after it.

    체크아웃 시간이 어떻게 돼요?

What is the check-out time? / How does check-out time work?

    che-keu-a-ut si-gan-i eo-tteo-ke dwae-yo?

Softer and slightly more conversational. Literally 'How is the check-out time set?' Useful when you want the policy, not just a number.

    몇 시까지 나가야 돼요?

By what time do I have to leave?

    myeot si-kka-ji na-ga-ya dwae-yo?

Focuses on your obligation. 까지 means 'by/until', and 나가야 돼요 means 'have to go out'. Good if you are unsure about the deadline.

    늦게 체크아웃할 수 있어요?

    Can I check out late?

    neut-ge che-keu-a-ut-hal su i-sseo-yo?

Use this to ask about late check-out. The pattern -할 수 있어요? means 'can I do ...?'.

    체크아웃은 11시예요.

    Check-out is at 11 o'clock.

    che-keu-a-ut-eun yeol-han si-ye-yo.

A typical answer you may hear. Note that Korean often uses the topic marker 은 after 체크아웃 when it is the topic of the sentence.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is 체크아웃이 몇 시예요? (che-keu-a-ut-i myeot si-ye-yo?). 몇 시 means 'what time', and 예요 is the polite copula ending. If the noun before it ends in a vowel, use 예요; if it ends in a consonant, use 이에요. 체크아웃 ends in the consonant ㅅ, so 이 follows: 체크아웃이 몇 시예요? You can replace 체크아웃 with 체크인 (che-keu-in, 'check-in') to ask 체크인이 몇 시예요? (che-keu-in-i myeot si-ye-yo?), 'What time is check-in?' The same pattern also works with other time nouns, for example 아침 식사가 몇 시예요? (a-chim sik-sa-ga myeot si-ye-yo?), 'What time is breakfast?'.

    When to use it

Use 체크아웃이 몇 시예요? when you simply want the time. Use 체크아웃 시간이 어떻게 돼요? when you want the front desk to explain the policy, for example whether there is a fee for late check-out. If you are worried about being late, ask 몇 시까지 나가야 돼요? This asks about your deadline. To request a later time, say 늦게 체크아웃할 수 있어요? (neut-ge che-keu-a-ut-hal su i-sseo-yo?). At a guesthouse or Airbnb, the same phrases work, but you may also hear the simpler 나가시는 시간 (na-ga-si-neun si-gan), 'the time you leave'.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    안녕하세요. 체크아웃이 몇 시예요?

Hello. What time is check-out?an-nyeong-ha-se-yo. che-keu-a-ut-i myeot si-ye-yo?
    B

    체크아웃은 11시예요.

    Check-out is at 11 o'clock.che-keu-a-ut-eun yeol-han si-ye-yo.
    A

    늦게 체크아웃할 수 있어요?

    Can I check out late?neut-ge che-keu-a-ut-hal su i-sseo-yo?
    B

네, 12시까지 가능해요. 추가 요금은 없어요.

    Yes, it is possible until 12 o'clock. There is no extra charge.ne, yeol-du si-kka-ji ga-neung-hae-yo. chu-ga yo-geum-eun eop-seo-yo.

A little context goes a long way

Korean hotel staff usually speak in polite language, so using -요 endings and 안녕하세요 is appropriate. Many Korean hotels have a firm check-out time, often 11:00 or 12:00, and late check-out may depend on availability. If you need to store luggage after check-out, ask 짐을 맡길 수 있어요? (jim-eul mat-gil su i-sseo-yo?), 'Can I leave my luggage?'

    One thing to watch for

Saying 체크아웃은 몇 시입니까? in a casual hotel conversation, or using the wrong copula and saying 체크아웃이 몇 시어요?

Try this instead: The polite everyday form is 체크아웃이 몇 시예요? (che-keu-a-ut-i myeot si-ye-yo?). Use 이에요 after a consonant and 예요 after a vowel. 몇 시입니까? is grammatically correct but very formal; it can sound stiff at a hotel front desk.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask 'What time is check-out?' politely?

    Show a sample answer

    체크아웃이 몇 시예요?

This uses 체크아웃 plus 이 because the noun ends in a consonant, followed by 몇 시예요. 체크아웃 시간이 어떻게 돼요? is also acceptable when asking about the policy.

2You want to ask if late check-out is possible. What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

    늦게 체크아웃할 수 있어요?

늦게 means 'late', and -할 수 있어요? means 'can I do ...?'. You could also ask 늦게 체크아웃해도 돼요? (neut-ge che-keu-a-ut-hae-do dwae-yo?), which asks for permission.

3The front desk says 체크아웃은 11시예요. What does this mean?

    Show a sample answer

    Check-out is at 11 o'clock.

체크아웃은 marks check-out as the topic, 11시 means '11 o'clock', and 예요 is the polite copula. The same sentence pattern can be used with other times.

    Take this with you

Memorize 체크아웃이 몇 시예요? as your default question, then add 늦게 체크아웃할 수 있어요? when you need more time.
