Korean for Replacing a Missing Zipper Pull at a Tailor Shop

Learn polite Korean to explain that your jacket's zipper pull snapped off and ask a tailor to replace just the pull, not the whole zipper.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

If the metal tab on your jacket zipper snaps off, the zipper itself may still work fine. In Korean, you need to name the part clearly and ask for a partial repair. This lesson teaches 지퍼 (jipeo, zipper), 손잡이 (sonjabi, pull or handle), 빠졌어요 (ppajyeosseoyo, it came off or is missing), and the key request 손잡이만 달아 주실 수 있어요? (sonjabiman dara jusil su isseoyo?, Could you attach just the pull?). You will also learn to ask whether the zipper track is still usable, so the tailor understands you want only the pull replaced.

    By the end, you can…

    • say that the zipper pull came off my jacket.
    • ask a tailor to replace only the pull, not the whole zipper.
    • ask whether the zipper itself still works and understand a simple answer.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    지퍼 손잡이가 빠졌어요.

    The zipper pull came off.

    jipeo sonjabiga ppajyeosseoyo.

Use this when the metal tab or handle is missing but the zipper track may still be fine.

    손잡이만 달아 주실 수 있어요?

Could you attach just the pull?

    sonjabiman dara jusil su isseoyo?

The particle 만 (man) means only, so this clearly asks for a partial repair.

    지퍼는 아직 괜찮아요.

The zipper itself is still okay.

    jipeoneun ajik gwaenchanayo.

Use this to reassure the tailor that the zipper track does not need replacing.

    전체를 바꿔야 해요?

Do I need to replace the whole thing?

    jeonchereul bakkwoya haeyo?

Ask this if you are unsure whether the repair can be partial.

    수선해 주실 수 있어요?

    Could you repair it?

    suseonhae jusil su isseoyo?

수선하다 (suseonhada) means to alter or repair clothing.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 손잡이만 달아 주실 수 있어요? combines 손잡이 (pull), 만 (only), and 달아 주실 수 있어요? (could you attach it for me?). The verb 달다 (dalda) means to attach or hang something. The auxiliary verb 주시다 (jusida) is the honorific form of 주다 (juda, to give/do for someone), and it makes the request polite. You can swap the object: 단추만 달아 주실 수 있어요? means Could you attach just the button? This pattern is useful whenever you want one small part fixed rather than the whole item.

    When to use it

Use these phrases at a tailor or repair shop when the zipper pull is gone but the zipper still moves. Start with 지퍼 손잡이가 빠졌어요. Then add 지퍼는 아직 괜찮아요. Finally ask 손잡이만 달아 주실 수 있어요? If the staff says the whole zipper must be replaced, you may hear 지퍼 전체를 바꿔야 해요. If they can do a partial repair, they may say 손잡이만 달아 드릴게요. Listen for the word 만 (only) to know whether the repair is partial.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    안녕하세요. 지퍼 손잡이가 빠졌어요.

Hello. The zipper pull came off.annyeonghaseyo. jipeo sonjabiga ppajyeosseoyo.
    B

    네, 지퍼는 괜찮아요?

Okay, is the zipper itself fine?ne, jipeoneun gwaenchanayo?
    A

네, 지퍼는 아직 괜찮아요. 손잡이만 달아 주실 수 있어요?

Yes, the zipper is still okay. Could you attach just the pull?ne, jipeoneun ajik gwaenchanayo. sonjabiman dara jusil su isseoyo?
    B

    네, 손잡이만 달아 드릴게요.

Yes, I will attach just the pull for you.ne, sonjabiman dara deurilgeyo.

A little context goes a long way

In Korean shops, using 주실 수 있어요? (jusil su isseoyo?) keeps a request polite without being overly formal. The verb ending -아/어 주세요 (-a/eo juseyo) is also polite and common. If you are unsure whether a repair is possible, asking 전체를 바꿔야 해요? (jeonchereul bakkwoya haeyo?) is a neutral way to check. Avoid assuming a shop offers same-day service or a set price; ask directly instead.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 지퍼를 바꿔 주세요 (jipeoreul bakkwo juseyo) when you only want the pull replaced.

Try this instead: This means Please replace the zipper, which sounds like you want the whole zipper changed. Say 손잡이만 달아 주실 수 있어요? (sonjabiman dara jusil su isseoyo?) to ask for just the pull. The particle 만 (man) is the key word that limits the request.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say The zipper pull came off in polite Korean?

    Show a sample answer

지퍼 손잡이가 빠졌어요. (jipeo sonjabiga ppajyeosseoyo.)

This uses 지퍼 (zipper), 손잡이 (pull), and 빠졌어요 (came off). You could also say 지퍼 손잡이가 없어졌어요, but 빠졌어요 is the most direct for a broken or missing part.

2You want only the pull replaced. What do you ask?

    Show a sample answer

손잡이만 달아 주실 수 있어요? (sonjabiman dara jusil su isseoyo?)

The particle 만 (man) means only, so this clearly asks for a partial repair. If you omit 만, the request may sound like you want the whole zipper replaced.

3How do you ask whether the whole zipper needs replacing?

    Show a sample answer

전체를 바꿔야 해요? (jeonchereul bakkwoya haeyo?)

This asks Do I need to replace the whole thing? You could also ask 지퍼 전체를 바꿔야 해요? for extra clarity. It is a neutral way to check the repair scope.

    Take this with you

Name the part, say it came off, and use 손잡이만 to ask for just the pull. That one particle keeps your repair request clear and polite.
