A warm illustrated language study space

When someone offers you help in Korean, your answer matters as much as the offer. Korean has several polite ways to accept, such as 네, 도와주세요, and to decline, such as 괜찮아요. This lesson focuses only on your response, not on how to offer help. You will learn short, safe phrases for everyday situations, how to sound warm rather than blunt, and when to use polite -요 endings with strangers, older people, or coworkers.

    By the end, you can…

    • accept an offer of help politely in Korean.
    • decline an offer of help without sounding rude.
    • thank someone for their kindness in Korean.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    네, 도와주세요.

    Yes, please help me.

    ne, do-wa-ju-se-yo

A clear, polite acceptance. Use it when you genuinely want the person's help.

    네, 부탁드려요.

    Yes, please, I'd appreciate it.

    ne, bu-tak-deu-ryeo-yo

Very polite and common when asking someone to do something for you.

    정말 친절하시네요.

    That's very kind of you.

    jeong-mal chin-jeol-ha-si-ne-yo

Use this to warmly acknowledge the offer, whether you accept or decline.

    괜찮아요, 고마워요.

    I'm fine, thank you.

    gwaen-chan-a-yo, go-ma-wo-yo

A gentle way to decline help. The thank-you softens the refusal.

    고맙지만 괜찮아요.

    Thank you, but I'm okay.

    go-map-ji-man gwaen-chan-a-yo

A polite decline that clearly shows appreciation before saying no.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To accept help, use 네, 도와주세요 (ne, do-wa-ju-se-yo) or 네, 부탁드려요 (ne, bu-tak-deu-ryeo-yo). To decline, use 괜찮아요 (gwaen-chan-a-yo), often with 고마워요 (go-ma-wo-yo) or 고맙지만 (go-map-ji-man). The polite -요 ending keeps your answer friendly with strangers, older people, and coworkers. Add 정말 친절하시네요 (jeong-mal chin-jeol-ha-si-ne-yo) to show warmth.

    When to use it

Use polite forms with anyone you do not know well, anyone older, and in shops or offices. With close friends, you can shorten to 고마워, 괜찮아 (go-ma-wo, gwaen-chan-a). If you are unsure, stay with the -요 forms: they are safe in almost every situation. For example, a stranger offers to carry your bag: 괜찮아요, 고마워요 is friendly and clear.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    짐이 많네요. 도와드릴까요?

    You have a lot of bags. Shall I help you?ji-mi man-ne-yo. do-wa-deu-ril-kka-yo?
    B

    네, 부탁드려요. 정말 친절하시네요.

    Yes, please. That's very kind of you.ne, bu-tak-deu-ryeo-yo. jeong-mal chin-jeol-ha-si-ne-yo.
    A

    아니에요. 어디까지 가세요?

Not at all. Where are you going?a-ni-e-yo. eo-di-kka-ji ga-se-yo?
    B

저는 괜찮아요, 고마워요. 여기서 택시를 탈게요.

    I'm fine, thank you. I'll take a taxi here.jeo-neun gwaen-chan-a-yo, go-ma-wo-yo. yeo-gi-seo taek-si-reul tal-ge-yo.

A little context goes a long way

In Korean, a direct no can feel cold, so 괜찮아요 is often paired with a thank-you. Politeness also depends on age and relationship: use -요 forms with strangers and older people, and casual forms only with close friends. A warm tone and a small bow or nod make your answer feel sincere.

    One thing to watch for

Using casual 괜찮아 with a stranger or an older person.

Try this instead: Use the polite form 괜찮아요 with people you do not know well. For example, say 괜찮아요, 고마워요, not 괜찮아, 고마워. The -요 ending shows respect and keeps the refusal friendly.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1A coworker offers to carry your box. How do you accept politely?

    Show a sample answer

    네, 부탁드려요.

This is a polite acceptance that fits a workplace. 네, 도와주세요 is also fine, but 부탁드려요 sounds especially courteous.

2An older neighbor offers to help you cross the street, but you do not need help. What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

    괜찮아요, 고마워요.

This politely declines and thanks the neighbor. 고맙지만 괜찮아요 is also correct and slightly more formal.

3Your friend offers help, and you want to say 'That's very kind of you.' What phrase do you use?

    Show a sample answer

    정말 친절하시네요.

This phrase warmly acknowledges kindness. With a close friend, you could also say 정말 친절하네, but the -요 form is safe with most people.

    Take this with you

Accept with 네, 부탁드려요 or 네, 도와주세요; decline with 괜찮아요, 고마워요. Add 정말 친절하시네요 to sound warm, and keep the polite -요 ending with strangers and older people.
