Japanese for an Umbrella Mix-Up at an Event: Report It Politely

Learn to tell event staff your umbrella is missing from the stand and a similar one is left, using 傘立て, 間違えました, 似ています, 私のではありません and 受付.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Friends planning a trip around a map in a warmly lit café

At a concert, conference or party, you leave your umbrella in the 傘立て (umbrella stand) and come back to find it gone, with a similar-looking one still there. This lesson gives you the polite Japanese to report that calmly at the 受付 (reception or information desk). You will learn to say what disappeared with 〜がなくなりました, describe your umbrella by 色 (colour), 柄 (pattern) and 持ち手 (handle), say the remaining one looks like yours with 〜に似ています, state clearly that it is not yours with 私のではありません, and ask whether one has been handed in with 届いていませんか. The aim is a clear, courteous report, not an accusation.

    By the end, you can…

    • report that my umbrella is missing from the stand using 〜がなくなりました.
    • describe my umbrella by colour, pattern and handle.
    • say another umbrella looks similar to mine and that it is not mine.
    • ask reception whether an umbrella has been handed in.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    傘立て

    umbrella stand

ka-sa-ta-te (four short morae; keep each even, no stress accent)

The rack or stand where umbrellas are left at an entrance. Use it to point staff to where your umbrella was.

    傘がなくなりました。

    My umbrella has gone missing.

    ka-sa ga na-ku-na-ri-ma-shi-ta

A neutral, polite report. 〜がなくなりました states that something disappeared; it does not blame anyone.

    黒い傘で、白い水玉の柄です。

It is a black umbrella with a white polka-dot pattern.

    ku-ro-i ka-sa de, shi-ro-i mi-zu-ta-ma no ga-ra de-su

Describe 色 (colour) first, then 柄 (pattern). で links the two descriptions.

    持ち手が木です。

    The handle is wooden.

    mo-chi-te ga ki de-su

持ち手 means the handle you grip. Use it when colour and pattern are not enough to identify your umbrella.

    あの傘は私のではありません。

    That umbrella is not mine.

    a-no ka-sa wa wa-ta-shi no de-wa a-ri-ma-sen

A clear but polite way to say the remaining umbrella is not yours. 私のではありません is the formal negative of 私のです.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

Use 〜がなくなりました to report that something you had is now gone: 傘がなくなりました (my umbrella has gone missing), 財布がなくなりました (my wallet has gone missing). It is more neutral than saying someone took it. To compare, use 〜に似ています: あの傘は私の傘に似ています (that umbrella looks like my umbrella). Add でも、私のではありません (but it is not mine) to avoid confusion. For a question, 届いていませんか asks whether an item has been handed in: 黒い傘が届いていませんか (has a black umbrella been handed in?).

    When to use it

Go to the 受付 (reception desk) and open politely: すみません、傘のことでお願いがあります (Excuse me, I have a request about an umbrella). Then report with 傘立てに置いた傘がなくなりました (the umbrella I left in the stand has gone missing). Describe it: 青い傘で、しま模様です (a blue umbrella with stripes). If a similar one remains, say あの傘は私の傘に似ていますが、私のではありません (that umbrella looks like mine, but it is not mine). Finally ask 届いていませんか. Keep your tone calm and factual; staff can then check their own procedures.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    すみません、傘のことでお願いがあります。

    Excuse me, I have a request about an umbrella.su-mi-ma-sen, ka-sa no ko-to de o-ne-gai ga a-ri-ma-su
    B

    はい、どうしましたか。

    Yes, what happened?hai, do-o shi-ma-shi-ta ka
    A

    傘立てに置いた黒い傘がなくなりました。白い水玉の柄で、持ち手が木です。

The black umbrella I left in the stand has gone missing. It has a white polka-dot pattern and a wooden handle.ka-sa-ta-te ni o-i-ta ku-ro-i ka-sa ga na-ku-na-ri-ma-shi-ta. shi-ro-i mi-zu-ta-ma no ga-ra de, mo-chi-te ga ki de-su
    B

    わかりました。あちらに似た傘があります。届いていませんか、と聞く前に確認しますね。

Understood. There is a similar umbrella over there. Before I ask whether one has been handed in, let me check.wa-ka-ri-ma-shi-ta. a-chi-ra ni ni-ta ka-sa ga a-ri-ma-su. to-do-i-te i-ma-sen ka, to ki-ku ma-e ni ka-ku-nin shi-ma-su ne

A little context goes a long way

At Japanese events, staff at the 受付 are used to lost-property reports and will stay polite if you do the same. Avoid accusing anyone; 間違えました (a mistake was made) frames the situation as an accident, which is usually the case with similar umbrellas. If you need to say someone probably took yours by mistake, 間違えられたかもしれません (it may have been taken by mistake) is softer than a direct accusation. Staff may ask you to wait or to write your contact details, but procedures vary by venue, so ask rather than assume.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 私の傘が盗まれました (my umbrella was stolen) as soon as it is missing.

Try this instead: Start with the neutral report 傘がなくなりました. If you later learn it was taken by mistake, 間違えられたかもしれません is more accurate and less confrontational. Keep 私のではありません for the umbrella that is not yours: あの傘は私のではありません.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you tell reception that your umbrella has gone missing from the stand?

    Show a sample answer

    傘立てに置いた傘がなくなりました。

This uses 〜がなくなりました to report a disappearance neutrally. You can add the location 傘立てに and a description such as 黒い傘で、白い水玉の柄です.

2How do you say that the remaining umbrella looks like yours but is not yours?

    Show a sample answer

    あの傘は私の傘に似ていますが、私のではありません。

〜に似ています compares the two umbrellas, and 私のではありません states clearly that it is not yours. でも can replace が in casual speech.

3How do you ask whether an umbrella has been handed in?

    Show a sample answer

    黒い傘が届いていませんか。

届いていませんか asks whether an item has been handed in. Replace 黒い with your umbrella's colour or pattern, for example 水玉の傘が届いていませんか.

    Take this with you

Report calmly with 〜がなくなりました, describe your umbrella by 色, 柄 and 持ち手, compare with 〜に似ています, say 私のではありません about the wrong one, and ask 届いていませんか at the 受付.
