Japanese for Reporting a Rental Bike Lock That Won't Register on Return
Learn intermediate Japanese to return a rental bicycle when the lock won't register: lock vocabulary, ロックがかかりません, 返却できません, and asking staff for help.

When you return a share bike, the app or dock must confirm that the lock has engaged. If the dial lock or key lock does not register, you cannot finish the return, and the rental may stay open. This lesson gives you the exact Japanese to name the lock type, say what is failing, ask a staff member to come, and confirm the return once it is fixed. You will practise a short staff conversation at the dock, using polite but direct phrasing that works in stations, bike ports and shop counters.
By the end, you can…
- name common bicycle lock types in Japanese, including ダイヤル式 and 鍵.
- explain that the lock will not engage or the return will not complete.
- ask a staff member to come and check the bike.
- confirm that the return has registered before I leave.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

The lock won't engage.
rokku ga kakari-masen.
Use when the lock mechanism itself will not lock, for example the dial turns but does not catch.
I can't return it.
henkyaku deki-masen.
Use when the return process will not complete, for example the app still shows the bike as rented.
It's a dial-type lock.
daiyaru-shiki no rokku desu.
Name the lock type so staff know which mechanism to check. 鍵 alone can mean a key or a lock.
Please call a staff member.
kakari no hito o yonde kudasai.
A polite request to the person at the counter or on the phone. 係の人 means the person in charge.
Could you check whether the return has gone through?
henkyaku ga kanryō shita ka kakunin shite morae-masu ka.
Use at the end, before you leave, to make sure the rental is closed.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The pattern 〜がかかりません means 'does not engage' or 'does not take effect'. For a lock, say For the return process, use 返却できません, which means 'cannot return'. If you want to be more specific, add the reason: ダイヤルが回っても、ロックがかかりません。('Even if I turn the dial, the lock won't engage.') To ask for help, use 〜てもらえますか: 見てもらえますか ('Could you take a look?'). These patterns keep the focus on the problem, not on blame.
When to use it
Use these phrases at the bike port, at a rental counter, or on the phone if the app shows an error. Start with the short fact: ロックがかかりません。Then add the lock type: ダイヤル式です。If a staff member is not nearby, say After they help, ask This sequence is clear and polite. Avoid saying 壊れています ('it is broken') unless you are sure; it can sound like an accusation. 調子が悪いようです ('it seems to be malfunctioning') is softer.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
Excuse me, I'd like to return this, but the lock won't engage.sumimasen, henkyaku shitai no desu ga, rokku ga kakari-masen.
I see. What type of lock is it?wakarimashita. dono taipu no rokku desu ka.
It's a dial type. Even if I turn it, it won't engage. Please call a staff member.daiyaru-shiki desu. mawashite mo kakari-masen. kakari no hito o yonde kudasai.
One moment, please. I'll check and tell you whether the return has gone through.shōshō o-machi kudasai. kakunin shite, henkyaku ga kanryō shita ka o-tsutae shimasu.A little context goes a long way
In Japan, service interactions often start with a brief statement of the problem and a polite request. すみません is a natural opener, not an apology for a serious fault. Staff may use keigo, such as 少々お待ちください and 確認いたします. You do not need to match that level; clear polite forms like 〜てもらえますか are fine. If the bike is at a port with no staff, use the intercom or app support and say Do not assume the return is complete until staff confirm it.
One thing to watch for
Saying 鍵がかかりません when you mean the return process will not complete.
Try this instead: 鍵 can mean a key or a lock, but for the return process use 返却できません. For the lock mechanism itself, say This separates the physical lock problem from the app or dock problem.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you say 'The lock won't engage' in Japanese?
Show a sample answer
This uses 〜がかかりません for a mechanism that does not engage. 鍵がかかりません is possible in some contexts, but ロック is clearer for a bike lock.
2You are at a bike port and no staff member is nearby. What polite request can you use?
Show a sample answer
This asks someone to call the person in charge. If you are speaking to staff directly, 見てもらえますか ('Could you take a look?') also works.
3Before leaving, how do you ask staff to check that the return has gone through?
Show a sample answer
This asks for confirmation that the return is complete. A shorter alternative is 返却は完了しましたか。('Has the return been completed?')
State the problem briefly, name the lock type, ask for a staff member, and confirm the return is complete before you leave.
