Japanese for When the Ramen Ticket Machine Won't Take Your Note
Learn polite Japanese to ask ramen shop staff for help when the ticket machine rejects your large banknote: お札が使えません, 両替, 千円札, 店員さん and 手伝ってもらえますか.

You slide a 10,000-yen note into the ticket machine at a ramen shop, and it slides straight back out. The machine may only accept smaller notes or coins, but you cannot read the small print fast enough. This lesson gives you the exact polite Japanese to get help instead of walking away. You will learn to state the problem with 〜が使えません, ask for change with 〜を両替できますか, and check whether the shop is cash-only with 現金だけですか. The goal is simple: speak to the 店員さん, get your ticket, and eat.
By the end, you can…
- say politely that the machine will not accept my banknote.
- ask a staff member to break a large note into smaller ones.
- check whether the shop accepts only cash.
- request help from staff without sounding demanding.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

すみません、お札が使えません。
Excuse me, the machine won't take my banknote.
su-mi-ma-sen, o-sa-tsu ga tsu-ka-e-ma-sen
Use this to state the problem to a staff member. お札 (o-satsu) means a paper banknote; the machine, not the person, is the subject.
一万円札を両替できますか。
Can you break a 10,000-yen note?
i-chi-man-en-satsu o ryō-ga-e de-ki-ma-su ka
A direct, polite request for change. Swap 一万円札 for 五千円札 (go-sen-en-satsu, a 5,000-yen note) if that is what you have.
千円札はありますか。
Do you have 1,000-yen notes?
sen-en-satsu wa a-ri-ma-su ka
Useful when the machine accepts 1,000-yen notes but not larger ones. 千円札 is a 1,000-yen note.
店員さんを呼んでもらえますか。
Could you call a staff member for me?
ten-in-san o yon-de mo-ra-e-ma-su ka
Use this at the counter if no one is nearby. 店員さん is a friendly way to refer to shop staff.
現金だけですか。
Is it cash only?
gen-kin da-ke de-su ka
Ask this to check payment options before you queue or insert money. 現金 means cash; だけ means only.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The pattern 〜が使えません means '〜 cannot be used' or '〜 is not usable.' Put the thing that fails before が: お札が使えません (banknotes are not accepted), クレジットカードが使えません (credit cards are not accepted), この機械が使えません (this machine is not working). To ask about change, use 〜を両替できますか: 千円札を両替できますか (can you change a 1,000-yen note?). Keep the particle を before 両替, because you are changing a specific item.
When to use it
Use お札が使えません when the machine rejects your note and you want to explain the situation to staff. Use 両替できますか when you need smaller notes or coins before trying again. If you are unsure whether cards are accepted at all, ask 現金だけですか before inserting anything. For help, 手伝ってもらえますか (te-tsu-dat-te mo-ra-e-ma-su ka) is a polite way to say 'Could you help me?' It is softer than a command and works well with strangers in a shop.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
すみません、お札が使えません。手伝ってもらえますか。
Excuse me, the machine won't take my banknote. Could you help me?su-mi-ma-sen, o-sa-tsu ga tsu-ka-e-ma-sen. te-tsu-dat-te mo-ra-e-ma-su kaはい、大丈夫ですよ。どんなお札ですか。
Yes, that's fine. What kind of note is it?hai, dai-jō-bu de-su yo. don-na o-sa-tsu de-su ka一万円札です。千円札に両替できますか。
It's a 10,000-yen note. Can you change it into 1,000-yen notes?i-chi-man-en-satsu de-su. sen-en-satsu ni ryō-ga-e de-ki-ma-su kaはい、できます。こちらでどうぞ。
Yes, we can. Please come this way.hai, de-ki-ma-su. ko-chi-ra de dō-zoA little context goes a long way
店員さん is a warm, everyday way to refer to shop staff, but when speaking directly to them, すみません is the safest opener. Avoid raising your voice or tapping the machine; staff usually notice and come over. If the shop is busy, keep your request short and show the note you are holding. Do not assume every ramen shop can break large notes, so ask before you insert money again.
One thing to watch for
Saying お札を両替してください as a direct command to staff.
Try this instead: Use a polite request instead: お札を両替できますか or 両替してもらえますか. For example, 一万円札を両替できますか sounds like a question, not an order, and is appropriate with a 店員さん you do not know.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1The machine rejects your 5,000-yen note. How do you tell the staff member?
Show a sample answer
すみません、お札が使えません。
This states the problem politely with 〜が使えません. You could also say 五千円札が使えません if you want to name the exact note.
2You want to change a 10,000-yen note into smaller notes. What do you ask?
Show a sample answer
一万円札を両替できますか。
This uses 〜を両替できますか, the polite pattern for asking for change. 千円札に両替できますか is also fine if you specify the notes you want.
3You are not sure whether the shop takes cards. What question checks this?
Show a sample answer
現金だけですか。
This asks whether the shop is cash only. You can also ask クレジットカードは使えますか, but 現金だけですか is shorter and fits a busy counter.
When the ramen ticket machine rejects your note, do not walk away. Say すみません、お札が使えません, ask 両替できますか for change, and use 手伝ってもらえますか to request help politely.
