Japanese for Board Games: Politely Correcting a Miscount

Learn elementary Japanese phrases to gently point out a counting mistake during a tabletop game, using すみません、数が違うかもしれません and もう一度数えてもいいですか. Practice a points scenario without causing offense.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

You are mid-game, tokens are moving, and you notice the score or resource count does not match what is on the table. Correcting this in Japanese requires more than knowing numbers: you need softeners, a tentative tone, and a way to invite a re-count rather than announce an error. This lesson gives you reusable patterns for that exact moment. You will learn how to say 'excuse me, the count might be different' and 'may I count once more?' while keeping the table calm. We focus on elementary grammar, natural politeness, and the vocabulary of counting The goal is not to win the argument but to keep the game enjoyable for everyone.

    By the end, you can…

    • politely suggest that a count might be wrong using
    • ask to re-count points or resources with
    • use counting vocabulary such as 数える and ポイント in a game setting.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

Excuse me, the count might be different.

    Su-mi-ma-sen, ka-zu ga chi-gau ka-mo shi-re-ma-sen.

Use this when you first notice a possible miscount. かもしれません makes it a guess, not an accusation.

    May I count once more?

Mō i-chi-do ka-zo-e-te mo ii desu ka.

Ask this to re-count your own points or shared resources.

May I check the points once more?

    Poin-to o mō i-chi-do ka-ku-nin shi-te mo ii desu ka.

Use 確認する (check/confirm) when you want to verify rather than re-count aloud. Softer than saying 'you are wrong'.

The way of counting might be different.

    Ka-zo-e-ka-ta ga chi-gau ka-mo shi-re-ma-sen.

Use this if the disagreement is about method, not arithmetic. It shifts focus away from the person.

    Shall we count together?

    Is-sho ni ka-zo-e-ma-shō ka.

A cooperative offer. Use it when you want to avoid singling anyone out.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is It means 'Excuse me, it might be 〜.' You can insert a short observation: 数が違うかもしれません (the count might be different), ポイントが足りないかもしれません (the points might be insufficient). The softener かもしれません is essential because it presents your observation as a possibility, not a fact. To ask for a re-count, use The structure is もう一度 (once more) + 数えて (te-form of 数える) + もいいですか (may I?). These patterns keep the tone collaborative.

    When to use it

Use these phrases when the game is paused or between turns, not while someone is mid-action. If you are correcting your own count, you can say (Excuse me, my way of counting might be wrong). If you think another player's count is off, avoid direct blame: 数が違うかもしれません、もう一度数えてもいいですか (The count might be different; may I count once more?). In a cooperative game, 一緒に数えましょうか works well. If staff are nearby, you can ask (Excuse me, could you tell me how to count the points?) — this asks for guidance without assuming a policy.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    Excuse me, the points might be different.Su-mi-ma-sen, poin-to ga chi-gau ka-mo shi-re-ma-sen.
    B

Oh, really? May I count once more?A, sō desu ka. Mō i-chi-do ka-zo-e-te mo ii desu ka.
    A

    Yes, please. Shall we count together?Hai, o-ne-gai shi-ma-su. Is-sho ni ka-zo-e-ma-shō ka.
    B

That sounds good. Then I will count, okay?Sō desu ne. Jā, wa-ta-shi ga ka-zo-e-ma-su ne.

A little context goes a long way

In Japanese game settings, direct correction can feel confrontational. Using すみません and かもしれません signals that you are not certain and leaves room for the other person to save face. It is common to re-count together rather than point out a single person's error. If you are a guest at a game cafe or a friend's home, asking もう一度数えてもいいですか is polite and cooperative. Avoid saying 間違っています (you are wrong) directly; it can sound harsh even if your count is correct.

    One thing to watch for

(Your way of counting is wrong).

Try this instead: Use a tentative, self-inclusive phrase instead: 数え方が違うかもしれません。一緒に確認してもいいですか。(The way of counting might be different. May we check together?) This avoids blaming the other player and keeps the game friendly.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1You notice the resource tokens do not match the score sheet. How do you politely suggest a possible miscount?

    Show a sample answer

This uses すみません to open politely and かもしれません to soften the claim. You could also say ポイントが違うかもしれません if the issue is specifically points.

2You want to re-count your own points. What do you say to ask permission?

    Show a sample answer

This asks 'May I count once more?' using the te-form If you want to check rather than count aloud, もう一度確認してもいいですか is also fine.

3The disagreement is about how to count a bonus. How do you shift the focus to the method?

    Show a sample answer

This says 'The way of counting might be different.' It avoids accusing anyone of a wrong total and opens a discussion about the rule. You could add 確認してもいいですか to propose checking together.

    Take this with you

Soften your correction with すみません and かもしれません, then ask もう一度数えてもいいですか. This keeps the game cooperative and polite.
