Japanese for Beginners: Offering Help and Responding to Offers
Learn to say 'Need a hand?' and 'I can help with that' in Japanese, and how to accept or decline help politely.

Offering help is a core social skill in Japanese. This lesson teaches beginner-friendly phrases to offer assistance and respond when someone offers you help. You will learn the difference between casual and polite forms, and how to avoid sounding pushy. We focus on practical, everyday situations like carrying bags, studying, or cooking. By the end, you can confidently say 'Need a hand?' and reply appropriately. The recordings contain two separate examples: lines 1–2 show an offer and acceptance; lines 3–4 show a refusal and acknowledgment. In the second example A receives an offer and B acknowledges the refusal. Do not join the four lines into one conversation with unchanged roles.

Useful pattern
To offer help, use the verb 手伝う (tetsudau, 'to help'). The polite offer is 手伝いましょうか (tetsudaimashō ka). The casual offer is 手伝ってあげる (tetsudatte ageru). For a more general offer, say 何か手伝おうか (nanika tetsudaō ka). To accept, say お願いします (onegaishimasu). To decline, say 大丈夫です (daijōbu desu).
When to use it
Use 手伝いましょうか as a polite offer and 何か手伝おうか as a casual question when that fits your relationship. 手伝ってあげる announces that you will help; あげる can emphasize doing someone a favor, so it needs care even among friends. Let the other person accept or decline. The first recorded pair has A offering and B accepting. The second pair starts a separate situation: A declines an offer and B acknowledges that refusal.

The two recorded pairs are alternatives, not one continuous exchange. In lines 1–2 the helper offers and the recipient accepts. In lines 3–4 the recipient declines and the helper says to ask if anything comes up. Offering with a question leaves room for a choice; do not assume that every offer must be accepted.
One thing to watch for
Treating 手伝ってあげる as a neutral question meaning Need a hand? in every relationship.
Try this instead: It announces that you will help and can emphasize the favor. The recorded 手伝いましょうか asks whether help is wanted; choose an offer that lets the listener respond.
