Japanese に vs で: Location, Direction, and Where Actions Happen

Learn the core difference between に and で in Japanese: に marks where something exists or where you go, while で marks where an action takes place. Includes patterns, a dialogue, and practice.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

The particles に and で both relate to places, but they do different jobs. The direct answer: use に for existence (where someone or something is) and for direction or destination (where someone or something goes). Use で for the location where an action happens. In other words, に often pairs with verbs like います, あります, 行きます, and 来ます, while で pairs with action verbs like 食べます, 勉強します, and 遊びます. This lesson gives you reusable patterns and a short dialogue so you can choose the right particle in everyday situations.

    By the end, you can…

    • use に to say where a person, animal, or thing exists.
    • use で to say where an action takes place.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    駅にいます。

    I am at the station.

    Eki ni imasu.

Use に with います for the location where a person or animal exists. 駅にいます means the speaker is at the station, not doing an action there.

    駅で待ちます。

I will wait at the station.

    Eki de machimasu.

Use で with an action verb. 待ちます is an action, so the place where it happens takes で.

    図書館で勉強します。

    I study at the library.

    Toshokan de benkyō shimasu.

勉強します is an action. The library is the place where the action happens, so use で.

    図書館に行きます。

    I go to the library.

    Toshokan ni ikimasu.

行きます expresses movement toward a destination. Use に to mark the destination.

    家に猫がいます。

There is a cat at home.

    Ie ni neko ga imasu.

Use に with います to say where a living thing exists. The cat is at home; no action is described.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

Place に + existence verb: 駅にいます (I am at the station), 家に猫がいます (There is a cat at home). Place に + movement verb: 図書館に行きます (I go to the library), 日本に来ます (I come to Japan). Place で + action verb: 図書館で勉強します (I study at the library), 駅で待ちます (I wait at the station). The key is the verb: existence and direction take に, while actions take で.

    When to use it

Ask yourself what the verb is doing. If the verb means 'be somewhere' or 'go/come to somewhere', use に. If the verb means 'do something', use で. Compare 公園にいます (I am in the park) with 公園で遊びます (I play in the park). The first describes existence; the second describes an action. For questions to staff, you can ask ここで写真を撮ってもいいですか (May I take photos here?) or 駅はどこにありますか (Where is the station?).

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    すみません、駅はどこにありますか。

Excuse me, where is the station?Sumimasen, eki wa doko ni arimasu ka.
    B

    駅はあそこにあります。あの建物の隣です。

The station is over there. It's next to that building.Eki wa asoko ni arimasu. Ano tatemono no tonari desu.
    A

    ありがとうございます。そこで切符を買えますか。

Thank you. Can I buy tickets there?Arigatō gozaimasu. Soko de kippu o kaemasu ka.
    B

    はい、駅で切符を買えます。窓口で買ってください。

Yes, you can buy tickets at the station. Please buy them at the counter.Hai, eki de kippu o kaemasu. Madoguchi de katte kudasai.

A little context goes a long way

In Japanese, particle choice often depends on the verb, not just the place. Using に with an action verb like 食べます can sound unnatural because に marks existence or direction, not the location of an action. In casual conversation, で is common for action locations, while に is standard for destinations and existence. If you are unsure, listen to the verb: existence and movement verbs usually take に, action verbs usually take で.

    One thing to watch for

Using に with an action verb, as in 図書館に勉強します.

Try this instead: Use で for the location where an action happens: 図書館で勉強します. に is for existence or direction, as in 図書館にいます (I am at the library) or 図書館に行きます (I go to the library).

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1Fill in the blank: 公園___遊びます。 (I play in the park.)

    Show a sample answer

    公園で遊びます。

遊びます is an action verb, so the location where the action happens takes で. 公園に遊びます would be unnatural because に does not mark the location of an action.

2Fill in the blank: 家___います。 (I am at home.)

    Show a sample answer

    家にいます。

います is an existence verb, so the place where someone exists takes に. 家でいます is not standard for this meaning.

3Choose the correct particle: 学校___行きます。 (I go to school.)

    Show a sample answer

    学校に行きます。

行きます expresses movement toward a destination, so に marks the destination. 学校で行きます would not mean 'go to school' because で marks where an action happens, not the goal of movement.

    Take this with you

Use に for where someone or something exists and for destinations with movement verbs. Use で for the place where an action happens. Check the verb first, then choose the particle.
