Includes practice questions and sample answers.

At a Japanese hotel, asking for a room upgrade is not just a matter of translating 'Can I upgrade?' You need to choose the right level of politeness, ask whether an upgrade is possible without sounding demanding, and clarify any extra charge. This lesson gives you ready-to-use patterns such as アップグレードは可能ですか and 追加料金はいくらですか, plus a realistic front-desk conversation. You will practice soft request forms, numbers and counters for money, and the difference between asking about availability and asking about cost.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask whether a room upgrade is possible using polite Japanese.
    • ask about the additional cost and understand the answer.
    • respond appropriately when the staff offers or declines an upgrade.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    アップグレードは可能ですか。

    Is an upgrade possible?

    Appugurēdo wa kanō desu ka.

Neutral-polite and widely understood at hotel front desks. Use this to ask about availability without committing to a price.

    追加料金はいくらですか。

How much is the additional charge?

Tsuika ryōkin wa ikura desu ka.

Use after you know an upgrade is available. 追加料金 means an extra fee on top of your current rate.

    もう少し広い部屋に変えていただけますか。

Could you change it to a slightly larger room?

Mō sukoshi hiroi heya ni kaete itadakemasu ka.

A polite request using ~ていただけますか. Softer than 変えてください and suitable for making a special request.

    差額はこちらで支払います。

I will pay the difference here.

    Sagaku wa kochira de shiharaimasu.

Use when you accept the upgrade and confirm you will pay the price difference. 差額 means the difference in price.

    空きがあれば、お願いしたいです。

If there is availability, I would like to request it.

Aki ga areba, onegai shitai desu.

Shows flexibility and politeness. 空き means vacancy or availability; お願いしたいです is a soft way to say you would like something.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is ~は可能ですか, which asks whether something is possible. It is polite and less direct than できますか. For example, アップグレードは可能ですか means 'Is an upgrade possible?' You can also use ~ていただけますか to make a request: 別の部屋に変えていただけますか means 'Could you change it to another room?' To ask about cost, use いくらですか or おいくらですか, the more polite version. Combine these patterns to move from availability to price: アップグレードは可能ですか。追加料金はいくらですか。

    When to use it

Use アップグレードは可能ですか at check-in or when you call the front desk. If the staff says 少々お待ちください, wait for them to check. If they offer a room, ask 追加料金はいくらですか before accepting. If you want to be especially polite, say 恐れ入りますが、アップグレードは可能でしょうか。This softens the request. When you accept, say では、お願いします or 差額はこちらで支払います. If you decline, say 結構です。このままで大丈夫です, which means 'No thank you, this is fine.'

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    すみません、アップグレードは可能ですか。

Excuse me, is an upgrade possible?Sumimasen, appugurēdo wa kanō desu ka.
    B

    少々お待ちください。空きを確認いたします。

One moment please. I will check availability.Shōshō omachi kudasai. Aki o kakunin itashimasu.
    A

    はい、お願いします。追加料金はいくらですか。

Yes, please. How much is the additional charge?Hai, onegai shimasu. Tsuika ryōkin wa ikura desu ka.
    B

    デラックスルームがございます。追加料金は三千円です。

We have a deluxe room. The additional charge is 3,000 yen.Derakkusu rūmu ga gozaimasu. Tsuika ryōkin wa sanzen en desu.

A little context goes a long way

At Japanese hotels, requests are usually made with soft, indirect phrasing. ~は可能ですか and ~ていただけますか are appropriate for front-desk interactions. Staff may use keigo such as ございます and いたします; you do not need to match that level, but polite です・ます forms are expected. Tipping is not customary, so the upgrade price is the full extra amount. If the hotel is full, staff may say 申し訳ございませんが、空きがございません. Accept this gracefully with そうですか。わかりました.

    One thing to watch for

Using アップグレードしたいです as a direct demand, or saying アップグレードしてください.

Try this instead: These can sound too direct. Use アップグレードは可能ですか to ask about possibility, or アップグレードしていただけますか to make a polite request. For example: 恐れ入りますが、アップグレードは可能でしょうか。

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you politely ask whether an upgrade is possible?

    Show a sample answer

    アップグレードは可能ですか。

This uses ~は可能ですか, a neutral-polite way to ask about possibility. アップグレードはできますか is also acceptable but slightly less formal.

2Ask how much the additional charge is.

    Show a sample answer

    追加料金はいくらですか。

追加料金 means 'additional charge' and いくらですか asks the price. おいくらですか is a more polite alternative.

3The staff offers a larger room for 3,000 yen. How do you accept and confirm payment?

    Show a sample answer

    では、お願いします。差額はこちらで支払います。

お願いします accepts the offer, and 差額はこちらで支払います confirms you will pay the difference. 支払います can be replaced with 払います in casual speech.

    Take this with you

Ask アップグレードは可能ですか first, then 追加料金はいくらですか before accepting. Keep requests soft with ~ていただけますか and お願いします.
