Japanese for Finding the Right Line at an Event: Pickup vs. Purchase

Learn to ask where the pickup line is and whether a line is for buying, using 受け取り, 引き換え, 購入 and 販売 at fan events and goods counters.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

At events with limited goods, staff often split the queue into two flows: one for people who already ordered or reserved and are now collecting items, and one for people buying on the spot. If you join the wrong line, you may wait a long time only to be sent elsewhere. This lesson gives you two core questions — asking where the pickup line is, and checking whether a line is for purchase — plus the vocabulary that keeps 受け取り (receiving something reserved) distinct from 購入 (buying). You will practise short, polite exchanges with staff so you can confirm the correct queue before committing to it.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask a staff member where the pickup or exchange line is.
    • check whether a particular line is for purchasing rather than pickup.
    • understand and use 受け取り, 引き換え, 購入 and 販売 in event contexts.
    • respond appropriately when staff redirect me to a different line.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    受け取りの列はどこですか。

    Where is the pickup line?

uketori no retsu wa doko desu ka.

Use when you have already ordered or reserved something and need to collect it. 受け取り means receiving goods you are entitled to; it is not the same as buying.

    購入はこちらですか。

Is purchasing this way? / Is this the line for buying?

    kōnyū wa kochira desu ka.

Use while pointing at or standing near a line, to confirm it is the purchase queue. こちら is polite for 'this one/this way'.

    引き換えはどこでできますか。

Where can I do the exchange / redemption?

hikikae wa doko de dekimasu ka.

引き換え often refers to exchanging a ticket, voucher or reservation number for goods. It overlaps with 受け取り but emphasises the swap or redemption step.

    これは購入の列ですか、受け取りの列ですか。

Is this the purchase line or the pickup line?

kore wa kōnyū no retsu desu ka, uketori no retsu desu ka.

A direct either/or question. Useful when two lines are close together and the signs are not clear.

    販売は何時からですか。

From what time do sales start?

hanbai wa nanji kara desu ka.

販売 refers to selling on the spot. Ask this to learn when same-day purchase begins; do not assume a time, as it varies by event.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern X はどこですか means 'Where is X?' and works with many nouns: 受け取りの列はどこですか (Where is the pickup line?), 引き換えカウンターはどこですか (Where is the exchange counter?). To confirm a line, use X はこちらですか: 購入はこちらですか (Is purchasing this way?). To contrast two options, use A ですか、B ですか: これは購入の列ですか、受け取りの列ですか. Keep the particle の to link a noun to another noun: 受け取りの列 is literally 'line of pickup'.

    When to use it

Use 受け取り when you are collecting something already arranged, such as a reserved item or a pre-ordered set. Use 引き換え when you hand over a ticket, voucher or number to receive goods. Use 購入 for paying to buy something now, and 販売 for the act or start of selling by the organiser. If staff say こちらです and point, repeat the key word to confirm: 受け取りですね。 (It's pickup, right?) This avoids joining the wrong queue. When you are unsure, it is fine to ask どちらですか (Which one is it?) while indicating both lines.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    すみません、受け取りの列はどこですか。

Excuse me, where is the pickup line?sumimasen, uketori no retsu wa doko desu ka.
    B

    受け取りは右側です。購入は左側の列です。

Pickup is on the right. Purchasing is the line on the left.uketori wa migigawa desu. kōnyū wa hidarigawa no retsu desu.
    A

    わかりました。この列は購入ですか、受け取りですか。

I see. Is this line for purchase or pickup?wakarimashita. kono retsu wa kōnyū desu ka, uketori desu ka.
    B

    こちらは購入の列です。受け取りの方は右側へお願いします。

This is the purchase line. Those picking up, please go to the right.kochira wa kōnyū no retsu desu. uketori no kata wa migigawa e onegaishimasu.

A little context goes a long way

At Japanese events, staff often use polite set phrases such as こちらへお願いします and 恐れ入りますが. A short すみません before your question is normal and helps you get attention without sounding abrupt. Signs may use 受け取り, 引き換え, 購入 or 販売 in different combinations, so confirming aloud is practical. Avoid assuming that a line labelled 受付 is the same as 受け取り; 受付 usually means reception or check-in, which may be a separate step.

    One thing to watch for

Using 購入の列はどこですか when you actually want to collect something you already reserved.

Try this instead: If you are collecting a reserved item, ask 受け取りの列はどこですか or 引き換えはどこですか. 購入 means paying to buy, so 購入の列 would send you to the on-the-spot sales queue instead of the pickup queue.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1You pre-ordered a goods set and need to collect it. What do you ask?

    Show a sample answer

    受け取りの列はどこですか。

This asks specifically for the pickup line. 引き換えはどこですか is also valid if a voucher or number must be exchanged.

2You are standing in a line and want to confirm it is for buying, not pickup. What do you ask?

    Show a sample answer

    これは購入の列ですか、受け取りの列ですか。

The either/or form makes the two options clear. 購入はこちらですか is also fine when pointing at the line.

3Staff say 受け取りは右側です。購入は左側です。 You want to buy now. Which side do you go to?

    Show a sample answer

    左側です。

購入 means purchase, so the left side is correct. If you were collecting a reservation, you would go right.

    Take this with you

Before joining a queue, ask 受け取りの列はどこですか or 購入はこちらですか, and listen for 受け取り versus 購入 to avoid waiting in the wrong line.
