Asking Where to Put Your Work: Finding the Drying Shelf in Japanese
Learn elementary Japanese for a craft workshop: ask where the drying shelf is, say where you will put your piece, and follow simple directions from staff.

At a craft workshop, you often finish a piece before it is ready to carry home. In Japanese, the key place is the 乾燥棚 (kansōdana), the drying shelf or drying rack. This lesson gives you two core questions: 乾燥棚はどこですか (Where is the drying shelf?) and 私の作品はどこに置きますか (Where do I put my work?). You will also learn the words 乾燥 (drying) and 棚 (shelf), plus simple direction phrases staff may use, such as 右 (right), 左 (left), 奥 (back), and 棚の上 (on the shelf). The goal is practical: locate the correct drying area, confirm where your piece goes, and understand a short reply without switching to English.
By the end, you can…
- ask where the drying shelf is in a craft workshop.
- ask where to put my own work.
- understand simple directions such as right, left, back, and on the shelf.
- confirm that a shelf is the correct drying place.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

乾燥棚はどこですか。
Where is the drying shelf?
Kansōdana wa doko desu ka.
A polite, direct question. Use it when you need to find the drying area and have not seen a sign.
私の作品はどこに置きますか。
Where do I put my work?
Watashi no sakuhin wa doko ni okimasu ka.
Use this when you are holding your finished piece and need to know the correct spot. 作品 means your created work or piece.
ここに置いてもいいですか。
May I put it here?
Koko ni oite mo ii desu ka.
A useful confirmation when you think you have found the right shelf but want staff approval.
乾燥棚は右ですか、左ですか。
Is the drying shelf on the right, or on the left?
Kansōdana wa migi desu ka, hidari desu ka.
Use this when staff point or speak quickly and you want a simple right-or-left answer.
棚の上ですか、下ですか。
Is it on top of the shelf, or underneath?
Tana no ue desu ka, shita desu ka.
Use this when there are multiple levels. 上 means top or above, 下 means bottom or below. Note that 下 is read した here; the same character is read もと in some other words.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The pattern [place] はどこですか means “Where is [place]?” For example, 乾燥棚はどこですか means “Where is the drying shelf?” You can replace 乾燥棚 with another place word: トイレはどこですか (Where is the toilet?), 受付はどこですか (Where is the reception desk?). To ask where to put something, use [thing] はどこに置きますか. For example, 私の作品はどこに置きますか means “Where do I put my work?” If you want to ask about a specific shelf, say この棚は乾燥棚ですか (Is this shelf the drying shelf?).
When to use it
Use 乾燥棚はどこですか when you are looking for the shared drying area and need directions. Use 私の作品はどこに置きますか when you already have your piece in your hands and need to know the exact place. If staff answer with 右 (right), 左 (left), 奥 (back), or 棚の上 (on the shelf), repeat the key word to confirm: 右ですか (Is it on the right?). If you are unsure whether a shelf is for drying, ask ここは乾燥棚ですか (Is this the drying shelf?). This keeps the exchange simple and avoids guessing.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
すみません、乾燥棚はどこですか。
Excuse me, where is the drying shelf?Sumimasen, kansōdana wa doko desu ka.乾燥棚は奥です。右側にあります。
The drying shelf is in the back. It is on the right side.Kansōdana wa oku desu. Migigawa ni arimasu.私の作品はどこに置きますか。
Where do I put my work?Watashi no sakuhin wa doko ni okimasu ka.棚の上に置いてください。
Please put it on the shelf.Tana no ue ni oite kudasai.A little context goes a long way
In a Japanese workshop, staff often give short directions rather than long explanations. A polite すみません before your question is natural and appropriate. If you do not understand, you can say もう一度お願いします (One more time, please) or ゆっくりお願いします (Slowly, please). Avoid touching other people’s pieces; point and ask instead.
One thing to watch for
Using どこですか alone when you mean “Where do I put it?”
Try this instead: Use どこに置きますか for “Where do I put it?” どこですか asks only “Where is it?” For example, 私の作品はどこですか means “Where is my work?” but 私の作品はどこに置きますか means “Where do I put my work?”
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you ask “Where is the drying shelf?” in Japanese?
Show a sample answer
乾燥棚はどこですか。
This uses 乾燥棚 (drying shelf) + は + どこですか (where is it?). It is polite and direct.
2You are holding your finished piece. What question asks where to put it?
Show a sample answer
私の作品はどこに置きますか。
This uses 私の作品 (my work) + は + どこに置きますか (where do I put it?). It asks about placement, not just location.
3Staff say 棚の上です. What does that mean?
Show a sample answer
It means “It is on the shelf” or “It is on top of the shelf.”
棚 means shelf, の shows possession or relation, and 上 means top or above. In context, it tells you the item goes on the shelf.
Ask 乾燥棚はどこですか to find the drying area, and 私の作品はどこに置きますか to confirm where your piece goes. Listen for 右, 左, 奥, and 棚の上, then repeat the key word to check.
