Japanese for Describing Contrast and Conflict Between Ideas
Learn intermediate Japanese patterns to express how ideas, values, or goals contrast or conflict, using 反面, 一方, 対立する, 矛盾する, and 相反する with natural examples.

In everyday and academic Japanese, you often need to say that two ideas, values, or goals pull in different directions. This lesson focuses on five intermediate patterns for contrast and conflict: 反面 (hanmen) for two sides of one thing, 一方 (ippō) for contrast between two things, 対立する (tairitsu suru) for opposition, 矛盾する (mujun suru) for logical contradiction, and 相反する (aihan suru) for mutual incompatibility. You will learn where each pattern fits, how to build sentences with nouns and na-adjectives, and how to avoid common errors such as using 一方で for direct logical contradiction. Examples use natural Japanese script with Hepburn romanization.
By the end, you can…
- describe two contrasting sides of a single situation using 反面 and 一方.
- express that two ideas or values conflict using 対立する, 矛盾する, and 相反する.
- choose the right contrast pattern for logical contradiction versus simple difference.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

自由と安全はしばしば対立する。
Freedom and security often conflict.
Jiyū to anzen wa shibashiba tairitsu suru.
Use 対立する when two values or groups stand in opposition. しばしば means 'often' and is slightly formal.
この計画は便利な反面、費用がかかる。
This plan is convenient, but on the other hand it is costly.
Kono keikaku wa benri na hanmen, hiyō ga kakaru.
反面 presents two sides of the same thing. Attach な to na-adjectives before 反面.
都市の生活は便利な一方で、自然が少ない。
City life is convenient, while there is little nature.
Toshi no seikatsu wa benri na ippō de, shizen ga sukunai.
一方で contrasts two different aspects or things. It is common in balanced discussion.
彼の言動は矛盾している。
His words and actions are contradictory.
Kare no gendō wa mujun shite iru.
矛盾する describes logical inconsistency. Use している for an ongoing state.
個人の利益と社会の利益は相反することがある。
Individual interests and social interests can be mutually incompatible.
Kojin no rieki to shakai no rieki wa aihan suru koto ga aru.
相反する is formal and strong, meaning two things cannot both be true or satisfied at once.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
For contrast within one topic, use Noun + は + 反面/一方で + clause. Example: この仕事はやりがいがある反面、疲れる (Kono shigoto wa yarigai ga aru hanmen, tsukareru — 'This job is rewarding, but tiring'). For conflict between two things, use A と B は対立する/矛盾する/相反する. Example: 自由と安全は対立する (Jiyū to anzen wa tairitsu suru). 矛盾する often takes と: 言うこととやることが矛盾している (Iu koto to yaru koto ga mujun shite iru — 'What someone says and does are contradictory').
When to use it
Use 反面 when the same subject has a positive and negative side: 便利な反面、高い (benri na hanmen, takai — 'convenient but expensive'). Use 一方で for neutral contrast between two facts: 兄は静かだ。一方、弟は話し好きだ (Ani wa shizuka da. Ippō, otōto wa hanashizuki da — 'My older brother is quiet; on the other hand, my younger brother loves talking'). Use 対立する for opposing positions, 矛盾する for logical inconsistency, and 相反する for incompatible goals. Do not use 一方で for direct logical contradiction; 矛盾する is better there.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
新しい制度は効率的な反面、個人の自由を制限するね。
The new system is efficient, but on the other hand it restricts individual freedom.Atarashii seido wa kōritsuteki na hanmen, kojin no jiyū o seigen suru ne.そうだね。効率と自由はしばしば対立する。
That's right. Efficiency and freedom often conflict.Sō da ne. Kōritsu to jiyū wa shibashiba tairitsu suru.でも、効率を求めるあまり自由をなくすのは矛盾していると思う。
But I think it's contradictory to lose freedom in the pursuit of efficiency.Demo, kōritsu o motomeru amari jiyū o nakusu no wa mujun shite iru to omou.確かに。個人の権利と社会の安全は相反することがあるから、難しい問題だ。
Indeed. Individual rights and social safety can be mutually incompatible, so it's a difficult issue.Tashika ni. Kojin no kenri to shakai no anzen wa aihan suru koto ga aru kara, muzukashii mondai da.A little context goes a long way
In Japanese discussion, direct contradiction can sound harsh. 矛盾している is often softened with と思う (to omou — 'I think') or ように見える (yō ni mieru — 'it appears'). 反面 and 一方で are common in balanced, polite explanations, while 相反する is formal and appears in academic or news writing. Choose the pattern that matches your register and the strength of the conflict.
One thing to watch for
Using 一方で for a direct logical contradiction: 言うこととやることが一方で違う。
Try this instead: Use 矛盾する for logical inconsistency: 言うこととやることが矛盾している。 (Iu koto to yaru koto ga mujun shite iru — 'What someone says and does are contradictory.') 一方で is for contrast between two facts, not for self-contradiction.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1Translate: 'This medicine is effective, but on the other hand it has side effects.'
Show a sample answer
この薬は効果がある反面、副作用がある。 (Kono kusuri wa kōka ga aru hanmen, fukusayō ga aru.)
反面 fits two sides of the same thing. 一方で is also possible if you present the side effects as a separate contrasting fact, but 反面 is more natural for one item's trade-off.
2Which pattern best expresses 'His opinion and the facts contradict each other'?
Show a sample answer
彼の意見と事実は矛盾している。 (Kare no iken to jijitsu wa mujun shite iru.)
矛盾する is used for logical contradiction. 対立する could mean opposing positions, but 矛盾する better captures inconsistency between opinion and facts.
3Complete with the correct form: 経済成長と環境保護は時に__。 (Keizai seichō to kankyō hogo wa toki ni ____.)
Show a sample answer
相反する (aihan suru)
相反する means mutually incompatible, which fits growth and environmental protection. 対立する is also possible, but 相反する is stronger and more formal.
Use 反面 for two sides of one thing, 一方で for neutral contrast, 対立する for opposition, 矛盾する for logical contradiction, and 相反する for mutual incompatibility. Match the pattern to the type and strength of conflict.
