Japanese for a Local Errand: Asking Whether Bicycle Parking Is Monthly or Temporary
Learn to ask staff whether a bicycle spot is 月極 (monthly contract) or 一時利用 (one-time use), and how to ask about paying for temporary parking.

When you park a bicycle near a station or shop in Japan, the sign may say 月極駐輪場 or 一時利用, and the difference matters: one is a monthly contract, the other is short-term use. This lesson gives you the exact questions to ask an attendant or staff member so you do not accidentally leave your bicycle in a contract-only space or pay for the wrong option. You will practise 月極ですか、一時利用ですか and 一時利用はできますか, plus simple follow-up questions about payment. The focus is on speaking clearly and politely at an elementary level.
By the end, you can…
- ask whether a bicycle parking area is monthly contract or temporary use.
- ask whether temporary use is possible and how to pay for it.
- understand a short answer about 月極 or 一時利用 and respond appropriately.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Is this monthly contract or temporary use?
koko wa tsukigime desu ka, ichiji riyō desu ka
Use this when you see a parking area and are not sure which type it is. The two options are presented together, so staff can choose one.
Can I use it temporarily?
ichiji riyō wa dekimasu ka
Ask this if you only need the spot for a short time, such as while running an errand. It is a polite yes/no question.
Do I need a monthly contract?
tsukigime no keiyaku ga hitsuyō desu ka
Use this when you suspect the space is contract-only. It asks directly about the contract requirement.
How much is the temporary-use fee?
ichiji riyō no ryōkin wa ikura desu ka
Ask this after confirming that temporary use is available. It asks only about the fee, not about payment method.
Where do I pay?
shiharai wa doko de shimasu ka
Use this to find out where to make the payment, for example at a machine or with the attendant.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Useful pattern
The pattern A ですか、B ですか presents two alternatives and asks the listener to choose. Here, 月極ですか、一時利用ですか means 'Is it monthly contract or temporary use?' You can reuse this pattern for other pairs: 現金ですか、カードですか (cash or card?), 今日ですか、明日ですか (today or tomorrow?). Keep the two options short and parallel. If you want to be softer, add すみません at the start: すみません、ここは月極ですか、一時利用ですか。
When to use it
Use 月極ですか、一時利用ですか when you are standing at a parking area and need to know which system applies before you leave your bicycle. If you already know you only need a short time, ask 一時利用はできますか first. If the answer is はい, follow with 料金はいくらですか and 支払いはどこでしますか. If the answer is いいえ、月極だけです, you know the space is not for temporary use. Do not assume every parking area offers both; ask each time.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
Excuse me, is this monthly contract or temporary use?sumimasen, koko wa tsukigime desu ka, ichiji riyō desu ka
Temporary use is possible too.ichiji riyō mo dekimasu yo
How much is the temporary-use fee?ichiji riyō no ryōkin wa ikura desu ka
You pay the fee at the machine.ryōkin wa kikai de haraimasuA little context goes a long way
In Japan, 月極駐輪場 usually involves a contract and is often marked with a sign, while 一時利用 is for short stays. Staff may use polite forms such as できますよ or お支払いは…, so listen for the ending. If you are unsure, repeating your question slowly is perfectly acceptable. Do not assume a space is free just because no one is present; check the sign or ask.
One thing to watch for
Asking 月極はできますか when you actually want short-term parking.
Try this instead: 月極 means a monthly contract, so 月極はできますか asks whether you can make a monthly contract. For short-term use, say
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1You want to park for 30 minutes. What should you ask first?
Show a sample answer
This asks whether temporary use is available. 月極ですか、一時利用ですか is also fine if you do not yet know which systems exist, but 一時利用はできますか focuses on your short-term need.
You want to confirm there is no temporary option. What do you ask?
Show a sample answer
This directly asks whether temporary use is possible. If the answer is いいえ、月極だけです, then only monthly contracts are available. You could also ask 月極だけですか to confirm.
3You have confirmed temporary use is available. What two questions help you finish the errand?
Show a sample answer
The first asks the fee, the second asks where to pay. Together they cover the practical information you need. 料金はいくらですか alone is also acceptable if the context is already clear.
Ask 月極ですか、一時利用ですか to identify the parking type, then 一時利用はできますか and 支払いはどこでしますか to use and pay for short-term parking.
