Japanese for Talking About Nutrition: Saying 'This Is High in Protein'

Learn to describe a food's nutritional strengths in Japanese using たんぱく質が豊富, 〜が多い, and 〜が少ない, and explain health benefits in natural conversation.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Friends talking over coffee in a city café

When you want to say a food is high in protein in Japanese, the most useful pattern is a noun plus が豊富 (hōfu, 'abundant in') or が多い (ga ōi, 'has a lot of'). This lesson focuses on describing what a food does for your health, not on listing your personal dietary requirements. You will learn five practical phrases, a flexible pattern for nutrients, and a short dialogue you can adapt when talking with friends, reading labels, or discussing meals. Pay attention to particles: the nutrient is usually marked with が, and the food itself is the topic, often marked with は.

    By the end, you can…

    • say that a food is high in protein, fiber, or vitamins using 〜が豊富 and 〜が多い.
    • explain a health benefit of a food in a simple Japanese sentence.
    • ask and answer whether a dish is high or low in a nutrient.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    この料理はたんぱく質が豊富です。

This dish is high in protein.

Kono ryōri wa tanpakushitsu ga hōfu desu.

A polite, neutral statement. Use it when describing a dish to someone you do not know well or in a presentation.

    納豆はたんぱく質が多いです。

    Nattō is high in protein.

Nattō wa tanpakushitsu ga ōi desu.

多い (ōi) is more conversational than 豊富 and works well in everyday speech.

    野菜はビタミンが豊富です。

    Vegetables are rich in vitamins.

Yasai wa bitamin ga hōfu desu.

Replace ビタミン with another nutrient to talk about different health benefits.

    この食べ物は健康にいいです。

This food is good for your health.

Kono tabemono wa kenkō ni ii desu.

A general health-benefit statement. 健康にいい is common and natural in conversation.

    それはたんぱく質が少ないですね。

That is low in protein, isn't it?

Sore wa tanpakushitsu ga sukunai desu ne.

少ない (sukunai) means 'little, scarce.' Add ね to seek agreement or soften the comment.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is [food] は [nutrient] が 豊富です / 多いです / 少ないです。The food is the topic marked by は, and the nutrient is marked by が. For example, 豆腐はたんぱく質が豊富です (Tōfu wa tanpakushitsu ga hōfu desu) means 'Tofu is high in protein.' To talk about a health benefit, use [food] は [body/health] にいいです, as in 魚は健康にいいです (Sakana wa kenkō ni ii desu), 'Fish is good for your health.' You can also combine the two: 魚はたんぱく質が豊富で、健康にいいです (Sakana wa tanpakushitsu ga hōfu de, kenkō ni ii desu), 'Fish is high in protein and good for your health.'

    When to use it

Use 豊富です in polite or written-style contexts, such as explaining a menu item or writing a short report. Use 多いです in casual conversation with friends or family. Use 少ないです when pointing out that something lacks a nutrient, for example 白いご飯はたんぱく質が少ないです (Shiroi gohan wa tanpakushitsu ga sukunai desu), 'White rice is low in protein.' If you want to ask a question, say この料理はたんぱく質が多いですか (Kono ryōri wa tanpakushitsu ga ōi desu ka), 'Is this dish high in protein?' Avoid saying たんぱく質が多い for a person; use it for foods, not people.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    このサラダはたんぱく質が豊富ですか。

Is this salad high in protein?Kono sarada wa tanpakushitsu ga hōfu desu ka.
    B

    いいえ、野菜が多いですが、たんぱく質は少ないです。

No, it has a lot of vegetables, but it is low in protein.Iie, yasai ga ōi desu ga, tanpakushitsu wa sukunai desu.
    A

    じゃあ、豆腐を入れましょう。豆腐はたんぱく質が豊富で、健康にいいです。

Then let's add tofu. Tofu is high in protein and good for your health.Jā, tōfu o iremashō. Tōfu wa tanpakushitsu ga hōfu de, kenkō ni ii desu.
    B

    いいですね。それなら、もっと栄養がありますね。

That sounds good. In that case, it will be more nutritious, won't it?Ii desu ne. Sore nara, motto eiyō ga arimasu ne.

A little context goes a long way

In Japanese conversation, directly commenting on someone's diet can feel intrusive, so nutrition talk usually centers on the food itself rather than on the person. Phrases like 健康にいいです are common in casual health discussions, while 栄養があります (eiyō ga arimasu, 'has nutrition') is a neutral way to praise a meal. When reading labels, you will often see たんぱく質 written as タンパク質 in katakana; both are acceptable, but katakana is more common on packaging.

    One thing to watch for

この料理はたんぱく質が多いです meaning 'I need a lot of protein.'

Try this instead: 多い describes the food, not your need. To express a personal need, say 私はたんぱく質をたくさん取る必要があります (Watashi wa tanpakushitsu o takusan toru hitsuyō ga arimasu), 'I need to take in a lot of protein.' For the food itself, keep この料理はたんぱく質が多いです, which means 'This dish is high in protein.'

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you say 'Fish is high in protein' politely?

    Show a sample answer

    魚はたんぱく質が豊富です。

This uses the topic marker は for 魚 and が for たんぱく質, with 豊富です as the polite predicate. 魚はたんぱく質が多いです is also correct in a more casual register.

2Ask whether this dish is low in protein.

    Show a sample answer

    この料理はたんぱく質が少ないですか。

The question marker か turns the statement into a polite question. You could also ask この料理はたんぱく質が少ないですか、それとも多いですか to offer two choices.

3Explain that vegetables are rich in vitamins and good for your health.

    Show a sample answer

    野菜はビタミンが豊富で、健康にいいです。

The で form of 豊富です links the two descriptions smoothly. A valid alternative is 野菜はビタミンが豊富です。健康にいいです, using two separate sentences.

    Take this with you

Use [food] は [nutrient] が 豊富です / 多いです / 少ないです to describe what a food is high or low in, and add 健康にいいです to explain its health benefit.
