Japanese for Joining a Board Game Already in Progress
Learn to ask whether you can join a tabletop game mid-session or get into the next round, using 途中から参加できますか and 次のゲームに入れてもらえますか, plus player-count vocabulary like 人数 and プレイヤー.

Walking up to a table where a board game is already underway is a common situation at game cafés, conventions and meetups in Japan. The useful skill is not simply saying "join" but choosing the right question for the right moment: asking whether mid-game entry is possible, or asking to be included in the next round. This lesson gives you reusable patterns for both, teaches the vocabulary of player counts, and shows how to approach a group politely without assuming they have space. You will also practise asking staff at a venue, where the answer depends on the game and the group rather than on any fixed rule.
By the end, you can…
- ask whether I can join a game that has already started
- ask to be included in the next game or round
- talk about player numbers using 人数 and プレイヤー
- approach a group politely and ask staff about joining options
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Can I join from partway through?
tochū kara sanka dekimasu ka
The standard way to ask about entering a game that is already in progress. Use it with a group or with staff when you are not sure whether mid-game entry is allowed.
Could you let me join the next game?
tsugi no gēmu ni irete moraemasu ka
Use this when the current round is too far along. 入れてもらえますか is a polite request for permission to be included, softer than 入っていいですか.
Is there room for one more person?
ato hitori, hairemasu ka
A short, natural way to check capacity. Replace 一人 with 二人 for two people. Useful when you can see the table but do not know the player limit.
How many players is this game for?
kono gēmu wa nan-nin yō desu ka
Asks about the player count printed on the box. 何人用 literally means "for how many people", and the answer is often something like 四人用 (for four players).
How many players are there right now?
pureiyā wa ima, nan-nin imasu ka
Asks about the current number of people at the table, which may differ from the game's maximum. プレイヤー is the common loanword for a game participant.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The pattern 〜てもらえますか asks whether someone can do something for you, and it is ideal for joining a group. 次のゲームに入れてもらえますか means "Could you let me join the next game?" You can swap the verb: 教えてもらえますか (could you teach me), 待ってもらえますか (could you wait for me). For a softer, more tentative version, use 〜てもらえたら嬉しいです, as in 次のゲームに入れてもらえたら嬉しいです, "I would be happy if you could let me join the next game." Note that 入れて here means "let someone in", not the physical action of entering a room.
When to use it
Choose 途中から参加できますか when the game has just started and you want to play the current round. Choose 次のゲームに入れてもらえますか when the round is nearly finished or the group says the current game is full. With staff at a game café or event, 途中から参加できるゲームはありますか (are there games I can join partway through?) is a natural question, but the answer depends on the specific game and group, so treat any reply as information about that table rather than a general policy. Always ask the group before sitting down.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
Excuse me, can I join this game partway through?sumimasen, kono gēmu, tochū kara sanka dekimasu ka
Right now we are full with one more person. You can join the next game.ima wa ato hitori de ippai nan desu. tsugi no gēmu nara hairemasu yo
Understood. Then could you let me join the next game?wakarimashita. jaa, tsugi no gēmu ni irete moraemasu ka
Of course. This game is for four players, and there are three now, so with you it will be four.mochiron. kono gēmu wa yon-nin yō de, ima wa san-nin dakara, anata de yon-nin ni narimasuA little context goes a long way
Japanese game groups often decide by consensus, so a short polite request followed by waiting for a reply works better than a long explanation. 入れてもらえますか frames the decision as the group's to make, which is appropriate when you are the newcomer. If someone says ちょっと難しいですね, it is a soft refusal; thank them with わかりました、ありがとうございます and move on rather than pressing the point.
One thing to watch for
Saying 参加したいです as a direct request to join right now.
Try this instead: 参加したいです states your wish but does not ask permission, and it can sound pushy at a table already playing. Ask a question instead: 途中から参加できますか for the current game, or 次のゲームに入れてもらえますか for the next one. If you want to soften it further, add できたら before the request: できたら次のゲームに入れてもらえますか。
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1You arrive at a table where a game has just begun and you want to play this round. What do you ask?
Show a sample answer
This directly asks about mid-game entry. Adding すみません first makes the approach polite. 今から参加できますか is also acceptable if the game has only just started.
2The group says the current game is full. How do you ask to be included next time?
Show a sample answer
入れてもらえますか politely asks the group to let you in. 次のゲームに入っていいですか is a valid, slightly more casual alternative.
3You want to know how many people the game is designed for. What do you ask?
Show a sample answer
何人用 asks the designed player count. If you want the current number at the table instead, ask
Ask 途中から参加できますか for the current round, 次のゲームに入れてもらえますか for the next one, and check capacity with 何人用 or 何人いますか before you sit down.
