Japanese for Autographs: Asking How to Read a Name and Requesting Roman Letters
Learn elementary Japanese phrases to ask a signer how to pronounce their name and to request it written in roman letters on an autograph, using サイン and 署名 correctly.

At a fan event, getting an autograph is exciting, but you may not know how the signer's name is read. This lesson teaches two practical requests: 名前はどう読みますか (How do you read your name?) and ローマ字で書いてもらえますか (Could you write it in roman letters?). You will also learn the difference between サイン and 署名, and how to politely ask staff for help. These patterns work when you want to confirm pronunciation before the signer writes, or when you want the name written in a way you can read later.
By the end, you can…
- ask a signer how to read their name in Japanese.
- request that a name be written in roman letters on an autograph.
- use サイン and 署名 in appropriate situations.
- politely ask event staff for help with an autograph request.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

名前はどう読みますか。
How do you read your name?
na-MA-e wa DOU yo-MI-ma-su ka
Use this directly to the signer before they write. It asks for pronunciation, not spelling.
ローマ字で書いてもらえますか。
Could you write it in roman letters?
ROO-ma-ji de KA-i-te mo-RA-e-ma-su ka
A polite request. ローマ字 means Latin script, not Japanese kana or kanji.
サインをお願いします。
An autograph, please.
SA-i-n o o-ne-GAI shi-ma-su
サイン is the common word for a celebrity's autograph at fan events.
ここに名前を書いてもらえますか。
Could you write your name here?
ko-ko ni na-MA-e o KA-i-te mo-RA-e-ma-su ka
Point to the spot on the paper or item. ここに means 'here'.
すみません、スタッフの方に聞いてもいいですか。
Excuse me, may I ask a staff member?
su-mi-ma-SEN, SU-TA-FFU no KA-ta ni ki-i-te mo ii desu ka
Use this when you are unsure about event rules or where to line up. It does not assume a policy.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The pattern 〜てもらえますか means 'Could you do ... for me?' It is polite and natural when asking a signer or staff member for a small favor. For example, ローマ字で書いてもらえますか means 'Could you write it in roman letters for me?' You can replace the action: 名前を書いてもらえますか (Could you write your name for me?), ゆっくり話してもらえますか (Could you speak slowly for me?). Keep the verb in て-form before もらえますか. This pattern is softer than a direct command and fits a fan event where you want to be respectful.
When to use it
Use 名前はどう読みますか when you want to know how to say the signer's name out loud. Use ローマ字で書いてもらえますか when you want the written form in Latin letters so you can read it later. If you want the name written on a specific spot, say ここに名前を書いてもらえますか and point. If you are unsure whether a request is allowed, ask staff: スタッフの方に聞いてもいいですか. Do not assume the event permits personalization; ask politely and follow the staff's guidance.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
すみません、サインをお願いします。
Excuse me, an autograph, please.su-mi-ma-SEN, SA-i-n o o-ne-GAI shi-ma-suはい、いいですよ。どこに書きますか。
Yes, that's fine. Where should I write it?HAI, ii desu yo. DO-ko ni ka-KI-ma-su kaここにお願いします。名前はどう読みますか。
Here, please. How do you read your name?ko-ko ni o-ne-GAI shi-ma-su. na-MA-e wa DOU yo-MI-ma-su ka「さくら」と読みます。ローマ字で書きますか。
It is read 'Sakura.' Shall I write it in roman letters?sa-KU-ra to yo-MI-ma-su. ROO-ma-ji de ka-KI-ma-su kaA little context goes a long way
At fan events, サイン is the usual word for an autograph, while 署名 often refers to a formal signature on documents. Using サイン keeps the situation casual and clear. Politeness matters: add お願いします or use 〜てもらえますか rather than a bare command. If the signer offers to write in roman letters, that is a helpful option, but do not demand it. When in doubt about personalization or line rules, ask staff with 聞いてもいいですか.
One thing to watch for
Using 署名 when asking a celebrity for an autograph at a fan event.
Try this instead: Use サイン for a fan autograph: サインをお願いします. 署名 is better for formal signatures on official documents, such as ここに署名してください (Please sign here) on a contract. At a fan event, サイン sounds natural and matches the situation.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1You want to know how to pronounce the signer's name. What do you say?
Show a sample answer
名前はどう読みますか。
This directly asks for the reading of the name. A valid alternative is お名前はどう読みますか, which is slightly more polite with the honorific お.
2You want the name written in Latin letters. What request fits?

ローマ字で書いてもらえますか。
This asks the signer to write in roman letters. You could also say ローマ字でお願いします, which is shorter but still polite.
3You are unsure if personalization is allowed. How do you ask staff?
Show a sample answer
すみません、スタッフの方に聞いてもいいですか。
This politely asks permission to consult a staff member. Another natural option is スタッフの方に聞いてもいいですか, without すみません if you already have their attention.
Use 名前はどう読みますか to confirm pronunciation and ローマ字で書いてもらえますか to request roman letters. Choose サイン for fan autographs, stay polite with お願いします, and ask staff when rules are unclear.
