Asking About Return Policy at a Japanese Recycle Shop

Learn to ask 返品はできますか and 返品可能ですか at a Japanese recycle shop, plus 返品 and 交換 vocabulary, so you know the store's policy before buying a used item.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A quiet illustrated scene for evening language practice

In a Japanese recycle shop, used goods are often sold with conditions that differ from a department store. Before you buy, you may want to know whether an item can be returned or exchanged if it does not suit you. This lesson gives you two natural ways to ask about the return policy, the key vocabulary 返品 and 交換, and a short role-play at the register. You will practice polite questions you can direct to staff, without assuming what any particular shop's policy is.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask whether returns are possible using 返品はできますか and 返品可能ですか.
    • use 返品 and 交換 to talk about returning or exchanging a used item.
    • ask a staff member about the return policy before purchasing.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    返品はできますか。

    Can I return this?

    henpin wa dekimasu ka

A clear, polite yes-or-no question. Use it at the register before paying when you want to confirm the store's return policy.

    返品可能ですか。

    Is returning possible?

    henpin kanō desu ka

Slightly more formal and compact, often seen on signs or heard from staff. Good when you want a simple confirmation.

    返品は何日以内ですか。

Within how many days can I return it?

henpin wa nannichi inai desu ka

Asks about the time limit, not the amount. Use it after you know returns are possible, to learn the deadline the shop sets.

    交換はできますか。

    Can I exchange it?

    kōkan wa dekimasu ka

Use when you want a different item rather than your money back. 交換 means exchange, so it is a separate question from 返品.

    購入前に返品条件を確認したいです。

I would like to check the return conditions before purchasing.

kōnyū mae ni henpin jōken o kakunin shitai desu

A polite way to state your intention. Useful when you want to see the policy before deciding to buy a used item.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is 返品はできますか, where は marks 返品 as the topic and できますか asks whether it is possible. A more formal variant is 返品可能ですか, which uses the noun 可能 (possible). To ask about a time limit, add 何日以内ですか, as in 返品は何日以内ですか. For exchanges, replace 返品 with 交換: 交換はできますか. Keep the question short and polite; staff can then explain the shop's actual conditions.

    When to use it

Ask before you pay, because the answer may affect your decision. At the register, say 購入前に返品条件を確認したいです, then ask 返品はできますか or 返品可能ですか. If the staff says yes, follow with 返品は何日以内ですか to learn the deadline. If you want a different item instead of a refund, ask 交換はできますか. These questions are neutral: they do not assume a policy, they simply ask the staff to state it.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    すみません、購入前に返品条件を確認したいです。

Excuse me, I would like to check the return conditions before purchasing.sumimasen, kōnyū mae ni henpin jōken o kakunin shitai desu
    B

    はい、返品はできますか。

Yes, can I return it?hai, henpin wa dekimasu ka
    B

    返品は何日以内ですか。

Within how many days can I return it?henpin wa nannichi inai desu ka
    A

    交換はできますか。

Can I exchange it?kōkan wa dekimasu ka

A little context goes a long way

Politeness matters here. 返品はできますか is fine in most shops, while 返品可能ですか sounds a little more formal and is common on signs or in staff speech. Ask before paying, and listen for the shop's own conditions rather than assuming a standard rule. If you need a refund rather than an exchange, say 返品; if you want a different item, say 交換.

    One thing to watch for

Using 返品 and 交換 as if they mean the same thing.

Try this instead: 返品 means returning an item, often for a refund, while 交換 means exchanging it for another item. Ask 返品はできますか for a return and 交換はできますか for an exchange. If you want a refund specifically, you can add 返金 (refund) when the staff explains the options.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask whether you can return an item?

    Show a sample answer

    返品はできますか。

This uses 返品 (return) with は and できますか to ask if it is possible. 返品可能ですか is also correct and slightly more formal.

2How do you ask whether you can exchange an item?

    Show a sample answer

    交換はできますか。

交換 means exchange, so this asks about swapping the item rather than returning it. 返品はできますか would ask about a return instead.

3How do you ask about the return deadline?

    Show a sample answer

    返品は何日以内ですか。

何日以内 asks within how many days. Use it after confirming that returns are possible, so the staff can state the shop's actual time limit.

    Take this with you

Before buying a used item at a Japanese recycle shop, ask 返品はできますか or 返品可能ですか, then 返品は何日以内ですか for the deadline, and use 交換はできますか if you want an exchange instead of a return.
