Japanese for Secondhand Model Kits: Asking About a Missing Runner

Learn to ask staff in Japanese whether a model kit is missing a runner or parts, using ランナーが欠けていませんか and 部品は全部揃っていますか.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A quiet illustrated scene for evening language practice

When you buy a secondhand plastic model kit, the box may be opened and a runner or part could be missing. This lesson teaches beginner-level Japanese to ask staff about completeness. You will learn key words like プラモデル (puramoderu, plastic model) and ランナー (rannā, runner), and two core questions: ランナーが欠けていませんか (Is a runner missing?) and 部品は全部揃っていますか (Are all parts included?). You will also practice a short dialogue to confirm whether a kit is complete before purchase.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask whether a runner is missing from a model kit.
    • ask whether all parts are included.
    • understand and respond to staff answers about completeness.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    ランナーが欠けていませんか。

    Is a runner missing?

    rannā ga kakete imasen ka

Use when you suspect a runner (the plastic frame holding parts) is missing. 欠けています means 'is missing/chipped'.

    部品は全部揃っていますか。

    Are all the parts included?

buhin wa zenbu sorotte imasu ka

Ask this to confirm completeness. 揃っています means 'are all present/complete'.

    箱を開けてもいいですか。

    May I open the box?

hako o akete mo ii desu ka

Ask permission before opening a secondhand kit to check contents.

    中身を確認したいです。

I'd like to check the contents.

    nakami o kakunin shitai desu

Use when you want to inspect the inside of the box.

    説明書はありますか。

    Is there an instruction manual?

    setsumeisho wa arimasu ka

Ask if the manual is included; it often lists all runners and parts.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To ask if something is missing, use 〜が欠けていませんか (〜 ga kakete imasen ka). For example, ランナーが欠けていませんか (Is a runner missing?). To ask if everything is complete, use 〜は全部揃っていますか (〜 wa zenbu sorotte imasu ka). For example, 部品は全部揃っていますか (Are all parts included?). These are polite questions suitable for staff.

    When to use it

Use these questions when looking at a secondhand kit. If you notice the box is opened or a runner looks incomplete, ask ランナーが欠けていませんか. If you want a general check, ask 部品は全部揃っていますか. You can also ask 箱を開けてもいいですか before opening the box yourself.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    すみません、このプラモデルは中古ですか。

Excuse me, is this plastic model secondhand?sumimasen, kono puramoderu wa chūko desu ka
    B

    はい、中古です。箱は開いています。

Yes, it's secondhand. The box is opened.hai, chūko desu. hako wa aite imasu
    A

    ランナーが欠けていませんか。

Is a runner missing?rannā ga kakete imasen ka
    B

    確認します。部品は全部揃っています。

I'll check. All parts are included.kakunin shimasu. buhin wa zenbu sorotte imasu

A little context goes a long way

In Japanese shops, it is polite to ask permission before opening a box. Use すみません to get attention, and keep your voice calm. Staff may check the contents for you. Do not assume all secondhand kits are complete; asking directly is normal.

    One thing to watch for

Using ありませんか instead of 欠けていませんか to ask if a runner is missing.

Try this instead: ありませんか means 'isn't there?' but for missing parts, use 欠けていませんか. Example: ランナーが欠けていませんか (Is a runner missing?).

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask 'Are all parts included?' in Japanese?

    Show a sample answer

    部品は全部揃っていますか。

This uses 部品 (parts), 全部 (all), and 揃っています (are complete). It is a polite yes/no question.

2What word means 'runner' in a plastic model kit?

    Show a sample answer

    ランナー

ランナー (rannā) is the frame that holds plastic parts. It is a loanword from English.

3Ask permission to open the box.

    Show a sample answer

    箱を開けてもいいですか。

This uses 〜てもいいですか to ask permission. It is polite and appropriate for staff.

    Take this with you

Use ランナーが欠けていませんか to ask about a missing runner, and 部品は全部揃っていますか to confirm all parts are included. Always ask politely before opening a box.
