Japanese for Ramen Counters: Asking for a Topping on the Side
Learn to ask for ramen toppings like egg or nori on the side in Japanese, using 別皿, トッピング, 別々に, のせないでください, and 後でのせます.

At a ramen shop, you often order at a ticket machine and hand your ticket to staff. If you want a topping such as a seasoned egg or nori served separately, you need to ask before the bowl is made. This lesson teaches polite, reusable Japanese for that exact situation. You will learn 別皿 (betsuzara), トッピング (toppingu), 別々に (betsubetsu ni), のせないでください (nosenaide kudasai), and 後でのせます (ato de nosemasu). The key pattern is 〜を別皿でお願いできますか, and a useful timing check is 先に言ったほうがいいですか.
By the end, you can…
- ask for a topping to be served on a separate plate using 別皿でお願いできますか.
- ask staff not to put a topping on the ramen using のせないでください.
- check whether I need to say my request before the bowl is made.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Could I have the topping on a separate plate, please?
Toppingu o betsuzara de onegai dekimasu ka.
Use this at the counter after handing over your ticket. 別皿 means a separate dish or plate.
Please don't put the seasoned egg on it.
Ajitama o nosenaide kudasai.
Use 〜をのせないでください for any topping you do not want placed on the bowl. 味玉 is a common ramen topping.
Please keep the nori separate.
Nori wa betsubetsu ni shite kudasai.
別々に means separately. This works when you want the nori kept apart from the noodles and soup.
I'll put it on later. (said by the customer)
Ato de nosemasu.
Use this to explain that you will add the topping yourself later. It helps staff understand why you want it separate. Note that this is the customer's line; staff would ask
Should I say it in advance?
Saki ni itta hō ga ii desu ka.
Use this to check timing. It asks whether you need to tell staff before the bowl is made.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The polite request pattern is 〜を別皿でお願いできますか. Put the topping before を. For example, 味玉を別皿でお願いできますか means 'Could I have the seasoned egg on a separate plate?' You can also use 〜を別々にしてください, as in のりは別々にしてください, meaning 'Please keep the nori separate.' If you do not want a topping on the ramen at all, use 〜をのせないでください, for example 味玉をのせないでください. To say you will add it yourself later, use
When to use it
Ask before the bowl is made. At many shops you buy a ticket first, then hand it to staff. That is the moment to say トッピングを別皿でお願いできますか or 味玉をのせないでください. If you are unsure whether the kitchen has already started, ask This checks whether you should have said it earlier. Keep your request short and polite. Do not assume the shop can do it; ask, and staff will tell you. If they agree, you can say 後でのせます to show you will add the topping yourself. Note that 後でのせます is your own line; if staff ask whether you will add it later, they will say 後でのせますか.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
Excuse me, could I have the topping on a separate plate?Sumimasen, toppingu o betsuzara de onegai dekimasu ka.
Yes, the seasoned egg. I'll bring it on a separate plate.Hai, ajitama desu ne. Betsuzara de omochi shimasu.
Should I say it in advance?Saki ni itta hō ga ii desu ka.
Yes, it's best to say it when you order. Will you put it on later?Hai, chūmon no toki ga ii desu. Ato de nosemasu ka.A little context goes a long way
At ramen counters, requests are usually made when you hand over your ticket, before the kitchen starts. 別皿 and 別々に are common, but shops may not always be able to separate toppings. Ask first, and accept the answer. Tipping is not customary in Japan, so a polite request is enough.
One thing to watch for
Using のせないでください after the bowl is already made.
Try this instead: Say your request before the bowl is made. If you are unsure, ask For example, at the ticket handover say If it is too late, ask 別皿でお願いできますか instead.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
