Japanese for the Tea Shop: Asking How Much Loose Leaf to Use per Cup

Learn to ask staff at a Japanese tea shop how much loose leaf to use per person and how many cups a bag makes, using polite patterns and key tea vocabulary.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Friends talking over coffee in a city café

When you buy loose leaf tea in Japan, the staff can tell you how much to use per cup, but you need the right words to ask. This lesson teaches you to ask 一人分はどのくらいですか (How much is one serving?) and 〜で何杯くらいですか (About how many cups does this make?), then repeat the answer back with 〜ですね to confirm. You will also learn 茶葉 (tea leaves), 大さじ (tablespoon), 急須 (teapot), お湯の温度 (water temperature), and 蒸らす (to steep). The focus is on polite questions to shop staff, not on universal brewing rules—treat what you hear as shop advice for that specific tea.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask how much tea leaf is needed for one serving.
    • ask how many cups a given amount of tea leaves will make.
    • repeat a staff member's advice back to confirm I understood.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    一人分はどのくらいですか。

About how much is one serving?

Hitori-bun wa dono kurai desu ka.

Use when you want a rough amount for one person. 一人分 means 'one person's portion'. Staff may answer with 大さじ (tablespoon) or grams.

    これはお湯の温度はどのくらいですか。

About what water temperature is this?

Kore wa oyu no ondo wa dono kurai desu ka.

Ask about the recommended water temperature for the tea you are considering. お湯の温度 is 'water temperature'.

    〜で何杯くらいですか。

About how many cups does ~ make?

~ de nan-bai kurai desu ka.

Put the amount before で. For example, 大さじ一杯で何杯くらいですか (About how many cups does one tablespoon make?).

    蒸らす時間はどのくらいですか。

About how long should I steep it?

Murasu jikan wa dono kurai desu ka.

Ask about steeping time. 蒸らす means 'to steam/steep' in tea context. The answer is shop advice, not a universal rule.

    大さじ一杯ですね。

    One tablespoon, right?

    Ōsaji ippai desu ne.

Repeat the amount back to confirm. 〜ですね seeks agreement. Use a rising intonation on ね.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 一人分はどのくらいですか asks for a rough measure for one serving. どのくらい means 'about how much' and is perfect when you do not need an exact number. To ask how many cups a certain amount makes, use [amount] + で + 何杯くらいですか. For example: 大さじ一杯で何杯くらいですか (About how many cups does one tablespoon make?). You can also ask 茶葉は一人分で何グラムくらいですか (About how many grams of tea leaves per serving?). The particle で marks the amount as a basis.

    When to use it

Use these questions at a loose-leaf tea shop when you are deciding what to buy. Start with すみません (Excuse me) to get attention. If the staff gives advice like 大さじ一杯で二杯くらいです (About one tablespoon makes two cups), repeat it back: 大さじ一杯で二杯くらいですね (One tablespoon makes about two cups, right?). This shows you are listening and helps you remember. If you want to ask about a specific tea, point and say これはどうですか (How about this one?). Remember that answers are shop recommendations for that tea, not universal rules.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    すみません、この茶葉は一人分はどのくらいですか。

Excuse me, about how much is one serving of these tea leaves?Sumimasen, kono chaba wa hitori-bun wa dono kurai desu ka.
    B

    そうですね、大さじ一杯くらいです。お湯の温度は八十度くらいがおすすめです。

Let's see, about one tablespoon. For water temperature, about 80 degrees is recommended.Sō desu ne, ōsaji ippai kurai desu. Oyu no ondo wa hachijū-do kurai ga osusume desu.
    A

    大さじ一杯ですね。では、大さじ一杯で何杯くらいですか。

One tablespoon, right? Then, about how many cups does one tablespoon make?Ōsaji ippai desu ne. Dewa, ōsaji ippai de nan-bai kurai desu ka.
    B

    だいたい二杯くらいです。蒸らす時間は一分くらいにしてください。

About two cups. Please steep for about one minute.Daitai ni-hai kurai desu. Murasu jikan wa ippun kurai ni shite kudasai.

A little context goes a long way

In Japanese tea shops, staff often give personalized advice based on the tea type. It is polite to repeat the advice back with 〜ですね to show you understood. Avoid asking for guarantees like 'best' or 'correct' method; instead, ask おすすめは? (What do you recommend?) to get shop suggestions. Also, 急須 (teapot) is commonly used for loose leaf tea, but staff may mention other tools. Listen for 大さじ (tablespoon) or グラム (grams) as units.

    One thing to watch for

Using 何人分ですか (How many people's portion?) when you mean 'how much for one person'.

Try this instead: Use 一人分はどのくらいですか for 'about how much is one serving'. 何人分 asks 'for how many people', which is a different question. For example, if you want to know the amount for one person, say 一人分はどのくらいですか.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask 'About how many cups does one tablespoon make?' in Japanese?

    Show a sample answer

    大さじ一杯で何杯くらいですか。

This uses the pattern [amount] + で + 何杯くらいですか. 大さじ一杯 means 'one tablespoon', and で marks it as the basis. You could also say 大さじ一杯だと何杯くらいですか, which is slightly more conversational.

2What does 蒸らす mean in the context of tea?

    Show a sample answer

To steep (let the tea leaves sit in hot water).

蒸らす literally means 'to steam', but in tea preparation it refers to steeping. You can ask 蒸らす時間はどのくらいですか to find out how long to steep.

3If the staff says 大さじ一杯で二杯くらいです, how do you confirm you understood?

    Show a sample answer

    大さじ一杯で二杯くらいですね。

Repeat the key information and add ですね with a rising intonation. This confirms understanding and is polite. You can also nod and say わかりました (I understand).

    Take this with you

At a Japanese tea shop, ask 一人分はどのくらいですか for a rough amount per person, and 〜で何杯くらいですか for cups per amount. Repeat the answer with 〜ですね to confirm. Treat the advice as shop recommendations, not universal rules.
