Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Friends planning a trip around a map in a warmly lit café

When you store a bag in a coin locker at a concert, conference, or festival, the paid time can run out while the event is still going. This lesson teaches you to ask staff, before the time expires, whether you can extend it, and to ask what happens if it does. You will use 延長 (extension), 時間を過ぎました (the time has passed), 追加 (additional), もう一度払う (pay again), and 大丈夫ですか (is it okay?). The goal is not to memorize prices or policies, but to ask clear, polite questions and understand the answer.

    By the end, you can…

    • politely ask staff whether I can extend my locker time.
    • ask what happens if my locker time has already passed.
    • understand and use 延長, 追加, もう一度払う, and 大丈夫ですか in a locker situation.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    Can I extend it?

    Enchō dekimasu ka.

Use this before your time runs out. 延長 means extension; できますか asks whether it is possible.

What happens if the time passes?

Jikan o sugitara dō narimasu ka.

Ask this to learn the consequence of being late, without assuming a specific fee or rule.

Is it okay if I pay an additional amount?

Tsuika de haraeba daijōbu desu ka.

追加 means additional. This asks whether paying more is acceptable, not how much it costs.

Do I need to pay again?

Mō ichido harau hitsuyō ga arimasu ka.

もう一度 means once more. Use this to check whether a new payment is required.

Is it okay to extend it now?

Ima, enchō shite mo daijōbu desu ka.

This is useful when you are still within the time but close to the limit.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is 延長できますか, meaning “Can I extend it?” You can make it more specific: 一時間延長できますか (Can I extend it by one hour?). To ask about a late situation, use 〜を過ぎたらどうなりますか: 時間を過ぎたらどうなりますか (What happens if the time passes?). If you want to offer payment, say (Is it okay if I pay extra?). These forms keep the question polite and open, so staff can explain the actual procedure.

    When to use it

Ask before the time expires. At the locker area, say (Excuse me, can I extend it?). If you are already late, say (The time has passed. What should I do?). To check a new payment, ask (Do I need to pay again?). Use 大丈夫ですか to confirm that an action is acceptable: 追加で払えば大丈夫ですか. This is not a guarantee; it is a polite way to ask staff to confirm.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Excuse me, can I extend this locker?Sumimasen, kono rokkā o enchō dekimasu ka.
    B

Yes, you can extend it. How many hours would you like to extend?Hai, enchō dekimasu. Nanjikan enchō shimasu ka.
    A

One hour, please. Is it okay if I pay an additional amount?Ichijikan onegaishimasu. Tsuika de haraeba daijōbu desu ka.
    B

Yes, that is okay. If the time passes, you need to pay again.Hai, daijōbu desu. Jikan o sugitara, mō ichido harau hitsuyō ga arimasu.

A little context goes a long way

In Japan, staff at lockers, stations, and event venues usually respond well to a short, polite question. Avoid demanding a specific outcome; instead, ask what is possible. If the answer includes a procedure you do not understand, repeat the key word with a rising intonation, such as 追加ですか, to confirm.

    One thing to watch for

Using 延長するな or a direct command form when asking staff to extend the locker.

Try this instead: Use a polite question instead: 延長できますか (Can I extend it?). If you need to ask about a late situation, say This keeps the request appropriate for staff and leaves room for their explanation.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1You want to ask if you can extend your locker before time runs out. What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

This directly asks whether extension is possible. You could also say 一時間延長できますか if you want to specify one hour.

2You are already late. How do you ask what happens now?

    Show a sample answer

This asks about the consequence of the time passing. If you are already late,

3You want to check whether you need to pay again. What question fits?

    Show a sample answer

This asks whether another payment is required. 追加で払えば大丈夫ですか is a valid alternative when you are offering to pay extra.

    Take this with you

Ask before the time expires: 延長できますか. If you are late, ask Use 追加, もう一度払う, and 大丈夫ですか to confirm the procedure politely, and let staff explain the actual rule.
