Japanese for Elementary Learners: Asking 'How Do You Cook ___?' and Understanding Simple Answers
Learn to ask how to cook a specific dish in Japanese with どうやって…を料理しますか, and understand short answers about boiling, grilling, frying and seasoning.

This lesson teaches one practical conversation skill: asking someone how to cook a particular food in Japanese, then understanding a short answer. You will use the question pattern どうやって…を料理しますか (dō yatte … o ryōri shimasu ka), which literally asks 'how do you cook …?' You will also learn common cooking verbs such as ゆでる (yuderu, to boil), 焼く (yaku, to grill or pan-fry), 揚げる (ageru, to deep-fry) and いためる (itameru, to stir-fry). The focus is on seeking guidance, not on following a full recipe step by step. Answers in real conversation are often short: a cooking method, a main ingredient, and perhaps a seasoning. You do not need to understand every word to get the key instruction.
By the end, you can…
- ask how to cook a named dish using どうやって…を料理しますか。
- recognise and understand short answers that name a cooking method such as ゆでる, 焼く, 揚げる or いためる。
- ask a simple follow-up about seasoning or cooking time.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

どうやって料理しますか。
How do you cook it?
Dō yatte ryōri shimasu ka.
General question when the food is already clear from context. Use a rising question intonation.
この魚はどうやって料理しますか。
How do you cook this fish?
Kono sakana wa dō yatte ryōri shimasu ka.
Names the food with この (kono, this) plus a noun. Replace 魚 (sakana, fish) with another food.
ゆでて、塩をかけます。
You boil it and sprinkle salt on it.
Yudete, shio o kakemasu.
A typical short answer. The て-form ゆでて links the method to the next action.
弱火で焼きます。
You grill it over low heat.
Yowabi de yakimasu.
弱火 (yowabi) means low heat. 中火 (chūbi) is medium heat and 強火 (tsuyobi) is high heat.
どのぐらいゆでますか。
How long do you boil it?
Dono kurai yudemasu ka.
A useful follow-up. どのぐらい asks about amount or duration.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The core pattern is どうやって + [food] + を + 料理しますか。The word どうやって means 'how' or 'by what method'. The particle を marks the food being cooked, and 料理しますか asks 'do you cook?' For example, どうやって卵を料理しますか (Dō yatte tamago o ryōri shimasu ka) means 'How do you cook eggs?' If the food is obvious, you can shorten it to どうやって料理しますか。To answer, use a verb in the ます form: ゆでます (yudemasu, boil), 焼きます (yakimasu, grill), 揚げます (agemasu, deep-fry), いためます (itamemasu, stir-fry).
When to use it
Use this question when you want guidance from a person, not when reading a recipe. It is natural with a family member, a friend, a shop worker or a cooking teacher. If you are asking about a dish on a menu, point and say これはどうやって料理しますか (Kore wa dō yatte ryōri shimasu ka, 'How do you cook this?'). In more polite settings, you can begin with すみません (sumimasen, excuse me). Avoid using どうやって with a plain noun alone; include を before 料理しますか。
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
すみません、この魚はどうやって料理しますか。
Excuse me, how do you cook this fish?Sumimasen, kono sakana wa dō yatte ryōri shimasu ka.ゆでて、塩をかけます。かんたんですよ。
You boil it and sprinkle salt on it. It's easy.Yudete, shio o kakemasu. Kantan desu yo.どのぐらいゆでますか。
How long do you boil it?Dono kurai yudemasu ka.五分ぐらいです。弱火でゆでてください。
About five minutes. Please boil it over low heat.Go-fun kurai desu. Yowabi de yudete kudasai.A little context goes a long way
In Japanese conversation, a request for guidance is often softened with すみません or ちょっと聞いてもいいですか (chotto kiite mo ii desu ka, 'May I ask you something?'). Short answers are normal and not rude; the other person may assume you will ask again if you need more detail. If you need a full recipe, say 作り方を教えてください (tsukurikata o oshiete kudasai, 'Please teach me how to make it').
One thing to watch for
Using どうやって with a direct object but no particle, as in どうやって魚料理しますか。
Try this instead: Mark the food with を: どうやって魚を料理しますか (Dō yatte sakana o ryōri shimasu ka). In casual speech, は is sometimes used for contrast, as in 魚はどうやって料理しますか, but を is the standard object marker here.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1Ask how to cook eggs using the full pattern.
Show a sample answer
どうやって卵を料理しますか。
This uses どうやって + 卵 (tamago, egg) + を + 料理しますか。If the eggs are already clear from context, どうやって料理しますか is also acceptable.
2Someone says ゆでて、塩をかけます。What cooking method did they name?
Show a sample answer
Boiling, followed by sprinkling salt.
ゆでて comes from ゆでる (yuderu, to boil). 塩をかけます means 'sprinkle salt'. A valid paraphrase is 'boil it and add salt'.
3Ask a follow-up about how long to boil something.
Show a sample answer
どのぐらいゆでますか。
どのぐらい asks about duration or amount. You could also ask 何分ゆでますか (Nanpun yudemasu ka, 'How many minutes do you boil it?') if you want a number of minutes.
To seek cooking guidance in Japanese, ask どうやって + [food] + を + 料理しますか, then listen for a short answer with a cooking verb such as ゆでます, 焼きます, 揚げます or いためます。
