Asking When a Place Opens and Closes in Japanese
Learn to ask 'What are the opening hours?' in Japanese, understand last entry (final admission), and read opening and closing times so you can plan a visit and buy tickets with confidence.

When you visit a museum, temple, or theme park in Japan, the ticket window and the entrance gate often close at different times. This lesson teaches you one core question, 開館時間は何時ですか (kaikan jikan wa nanji desu ka), plus the words for opening time, closing time, and last entry. You will also learn how to read times like 9時から5時まで and how to ask whether you can still enter. Everything here uses polite です/ます forms, which are safe with staff at ticket counters and information desks.
By the end, you can…
- ask what the opening hours of a site are in polite Japanese.
- understand and say opening time, closing time, and last entry.
- ask whether entry is still possible before the last entry time.
- read simple time ranges such as 9時から5時まで.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

開館時間は何時ですか。
What are the opening hours?
kaikan jikan wa nanji desu ka
Use 開館 (kaikan) for museums, galleries, and public halls. For shops, say 開店 (kaiten); for parks or shrines, 開園 (kaien) or simply 何時からですか (nanji kara desu ka).
何時から何時までですか。
From what time until what time is it?
nanji kara nanji made desu ka
A general, very useful pattern. から marks the start and まで marks the end, so you can use it for any site.
最終入場は何時ですか。
What time is the last entry?
saishū nyūjō wa nanji desu ka
最終入場 (saishū nyūjō) means the last time you may enter. It is often earlier than the closing time, so ask this before buying a ticket.
今からでも入れますか。
Can I still go in now?
ima kara demo hairemasu ka
Use this near the end of the day. 入れますか (hairemasu ka) is the polite potential form of 入る (hairu, to enter).
大人一枚お願いします。
One adult ticket, please.
otona ichimai onegaishimasu
Useful right after you confirm the hours. 一枚 (ichimai) is the counter for flat tickets; for two, say 二枚 (nimai).
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The pattern [place word]時間は何時ですか asks for a time. 開館時間 (kaikan jikan) means opening hours for a museum or hall, 閉館時間 (heikan jikan) means closing time, and 営業時間 (eigyō jikan) means business hours for shops and restaurants. To give an answer, use から…まで: 9時から5時までです (ku ji kara go ji made desu) means 'It is from 9 to 5.' Add 最終入場は4時半です (saishū nyūjō wa yo ji han desu) to warn that last entry is 4:30.
When to use it
Ask 開館時間は何時ですか at the ticket counter or information desk before you pay. If the sign is hard to read, point to it and say これは何時までですか (kore wa nanji made desu ka, 'Until what time is this?'). When you arrive late, ask 今からでも入れますか before buying, because some sites stop selling tickets 30 minutes before closing. Staff may answer 最終入場は終わりました (saishū nyūjō wa owarimashita, 'Last entry has ended'), so listen for 終わりました (owarimashita, finished).
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
すみません、開館時間は何時ですか。
Excuse me, what are the opening hours?sumimasen, kaikan jikan wa nanji desu ka9時から5時までです。最終入場は4時半です。
It is from 9 to 5. Last entry is 4:30.ku ji kara go ji made desu. saishū nyūjō wa yo ji han desu今、3時ですが、まだ入れますか。
It is 3 o'clock now; can I still enter?ima, san ji desu ga, mada hairemasu kaはい、入れます。大人一枚ですね。
Yes, you can. One adult ticket, right?hai, hairemasu. otona ichimai desu neA little context goes a long way
Japanese service staff often state the closing time and the last entry time separately, and 最終入場 can be 30 minutes or more before closing. Signs may use 開館, 閉館, 最終入場, or 受付終了 (uketsuke shūryō, 'reception closed'). If you are unsure, repeating the time back with a rising intonation, 4時半ですか (yo ji han desu ka), is a natural and polite way to confirm.
One thing to watch for
Using 閉館時間 (heikan jikan) to ask when the last entry is.
Try this instead: 閉館時間 is the closing time of the building, not the last entry. Ask 最終入場は何時ですか (saishū nyūjō wa nanji desu ka) instead. For example, a museum may close at 5時 but have 最終入場 at 4時半, so the two answers are different.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you ask 'What are the opening hours?' at a museum?
Show a sample answer
開館時間は何時ですか。 (kaikan jikan wa nanji desu ka)
開館時間 fits museums and halls. At a shop, 開店時間 or 営業時間 would be more natural, so both are valid depending on the place.
2The sign says 最終入場は4時半です. What does that mean?
Show a sample answer
Last entry is 4:30.
最終入場 means the last time you may enter, which may be earlier than the closing time. 4時半 (yo ji han) is 4:30.
3You arrive at 4:40 and last entry was 4:30. What can you ask staff?
Show a sample answer
今からでも入れますか。 (ima kara demo hairemasu ka)
This politely asks whether you can still enter now. Staff may reply 最終入場は終わりました, meaning last entry has ended.
Ask 開館時間は何時ですか for opening hours, then confirm 最終入場は何時ですか before buying your ticket, because last entry is often earlier than closing time.
