Japanese for Adjusting a Rental Bicycle Saddle Height

Learn to ask rental shop staff to raise or lower your bicycle saddle in Japanese, and respond when they ask how high you want it.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Friends planning a trip around a map in a warmly lit café

When you rent a bicycle in Japan, the saddle is often set too low or too high for you. You need to ask the staff to adjust it. This lesson teaches you the key words サドル (saddle) and 高さ (height), and the polite request patterns サドルを上げてもらえますか (Can you raise the saddle?) and サドルを下げてもらえますか (Can you lower the saddle?). You will also learn to answer the staff's question about your preferred height with このくらいがいいです (This much is good). By the end, you can handle a quick saddle adjustment at the rental counter before you ride.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask a rental shop staff to raise or lower the bicycle saddle.
    • understand and respond to a question about my desired saddle height.
    • use このくらいがいいです to indicate that the current height is good.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    サドルを上げてもらえますか。

    Could you raise the saddle?

    Sadoru o agete moraemasu ka.

Use when the saddle is too low. 上げて means 'raise'.

    サドルを下げてもらえますか。

    Could you lower the saddle?

    Sadoru o sagete moraemasu ka.

Use when the saddle is too high. 下げて means 'lower'.

    このくらいがいいです。

    This much is good.

    Kono kurai ga ii desu.

Say this when the staff adjusts and you want to indicate the current height is fine.

    もう少し上げてください。

Please raise it a little more.

    Mō sukoshi agete kudasai.

Use if you need a small additional adjustment upward.

    高さはどのくらいがいいですか。

About how high would you like it?

Takasa wa dono kurai ga ii desu ka.

This is what staff might ask you. 高さ means 'height'.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern ~てもらえますか means 'Could you do ~ for me?' It is polite and common in shops. For example, サドルを上げてもらえますか (Could you raise the saddle?) and サドルを下げてもらえますか (Could you lower the saddle?). You can also use ~てください for a direct request: サドルを上げてください (Please raise the saddle). The ~てもらえますか form is softer and safer with staff.

    When to use it

Use these phrases at the rental counter before you ride. If the staff asks 高さはどのくらいがいいですか (About how high would you like it?), you can respond with このくらいがいいです (This much is good) while indicating with your hand. If you need more adjustment, say もう少し上げてください (Please raise it a little more) or もう少し下げてください (Please lower it a little more).

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    すみません、サドルを上げてもらえますか。

Excuse me, could you raise the saddle?Sumimasen, sadoru o agete moraemasu ka.
    B

    はい、わかりました。高さはどのくらいがいいですか。

Yes, understood. About how high would you like it?Hai, wakarimashita. Takasa wa dono kurai ga ii desu ka.
    A

    このくらいがいいです。

This much is good.Kono kurai ga ii desu.
    B

    はい、これでどうですか。

OK, how is this?Hai, kore de dō desu ka.

A little context goes a long way

In Japan, rental shop staff are usually helpful and will adjust the saddle for you. It is polite to say すみません (Excuse me) to get their attention, and ありがとうございます (Thank you) when they finish. Avoid adjusting the saddle yourself unless the staff says it is okay; some shops prefer to handle it to avoid damage.

    One thing to watch for

Using サドルを上げますか (Shall I raise the saddle?) when you want the staff to do it.

Try this instead: Use サドルを上げてもらえますか (Could you raise the saddle?) to ask someone to do it for you. 上げますか asks if you should do it, which is not what you want.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask the staff to lower the saddle?

    Show a sample answer

    サドルを下げてもらえますか。

This uses 下げて (lower) with もらえますか (could you). It is polite and clear. You could also say サドルを下げてください, but もらえますか is softer.

2The staff asks 高さはどのくらいがいいですか。 You want to say 'This much is good.' What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

    このくらいがいいです。

このくらい means 'this much' and がいいです means 'is good'. You can also say これでいいです (This is fine), but このくらい is more precise for height.

3You need the saddle a little higher. What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

    もう少し上げてください。

もう少し means 'a little more' and 上げてください means 'please raise'. You could also say もう少し上げてもらえますか, which is equally polite.

    Take this with you

Remember サドル (saddle) and 高さ (height). Use サドルを上げてもらえますか to raise and サドルを下げてもらえますか to lower. Respond with このくらいがいいです when the height feels right.
