How to Tell a Short Personal Story in Italian: Sequencing a Beginning, Middle, and End
Learn to tell a simple personal story in Italian using the passato prossimo and clear time markers like prima, poi, and alla fine to sequence events.

Telling a short story about your day or a past event is one of the most useful things you can do in Italian. The key is not complex grammar but clear sequencing: saying what happened first, then what happened next, and finally how it ended. In this lesson you will learn a small set of time markers and the passato prossimo forms of common verbs so you can narrate a simple personal story from beginning to end. You will practice linking events in order, not describing complicated plots.
By the end, you can…
- use time markers like prima, poi, and alla fine to order events in a short story.
- form basic passato prossimo sentences with common verbs to say what happened.
- tell a simple personal story with a clear beginning, middle, and end.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Prima sono andato al mercato.
First I went to the market.
PREE-mah SO-noh ahn-DAH-toh ahl mehr-KAH-toh
Use prima to open your story. Sono andato is masculine; a woman says sono andata.
Poi ho incontrato un amico.
Then I met a friend.
poy oh een-kohn-TRAH-toh oon ah-MEE-koh
Poi moves the story forward. Ho incontrato uses avere plus the past participle.
Dopo abbiamo preso un caffè insieme.
Afterwards we had a coffee together.
DOH-poh ahb-BYAH-moh PREH-zoh oon kahf-FEH een-SYEH-meh
Dopo signals the next stage. Abbiamo preso is the noi form of prendere in the passato prossimo.
Alla fine sono tornato a casa.
In the end I went back home.
AHL-lah FEE-neh SO-noh tor-NAH-toh ah KAH-zah
Alla fine closes the story. Tornato agrees with a male speaker; a woman says tornata.
È stata una bella giornata.
It was a nice day.
eh STAH-tah OO-nah BEL-lah jor-NAH-tah
A simple ending comment. È stata agrees with giornata, which is feminine.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
For a clear sequence, combine a time marker with a passato prossimo verb: Prima sono andato al mercato. Poi ho incontrato un amico. Dopo abbiamo preso un caffè. Alla fine sono tornato a casa. Notice that some verbs use essere (sono andato, sono tornato) and others use avere (ho incontrato, abbiamo preso). With essere, the past participle changes for gender: andato/andata, tornato/tornata.
When to use it
Use this pattern when you want to tell a short personal story about a past day, trip, or event. Keep the story to three or four steps: one event after prima, one after poi or dopo, and a closing event after alla fine. For example: Prima ho studiato italiano. Poi ho pranzato con mia sorella. Alla fine ho guardato un film. This is enough for a simple, clear narrative without complex plot details.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

In everyday Italian conversation, the passato prossimo is the normal past tense for finished events, even for things that happened long ago. In much of southern Italy you may hear the passato remoto (for example, andai, incontrai) in speech, but learners should use the passato prossimo, which is understood everywhere and standard in most of the north and center.
One thing to watch for
Using the present tense for all events, as in Prima vado al mercato, poi incontro un amico.
Try this instead: For a finished past story, use the passato prossimo: Prima sono andato al mercato, poi ho incontrato un amico. Remember that essere verbs change the participle for gender: sono andato (male) versus sono andata (female).
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you say 'First I went to the market' if you are a woman?
Show a sample answer
Prima sono andata al mercato.
The verb andare takes essere in the passato prossimo, so the participle agrees with the speaker: andata for a woman, andato for a man.
2Which time marker would you use to introduce the final event of your story?
Show a sample answer
Alla fine, for example: Alla fine sono tornato a casa.
Alla fine signals the end of the sequence. Dopo or poi could introduce a later event too, but alla fine specifically closes the story.
3Correct this sentence: Poi ho andato al bar.
Show a sample answer
Poi sono andato al bar.
Andare uses essere, not avere, in the passato prossimo. A woman would say sono andata al bar.
Tell your story in three clear steps: open with prima, continue with poi or dopo, and close with alla fine, using the passato prossimo and matching the participle to the subject's gender when the verb takes essere.
