Italian for Talking About Plots and Characters: Saying 'The Ending Was Surprising'

Learn elementary Italian to describe a plot and its characters, say an ending was surprising, and recommend a film or series, contrasting narrative media with music.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

When you talk about a film, a series or a novel in Italian, you need three things: words for the plot, words for the characters, and a way to give your opinion. In this lesson you will learn to say what happens, describe a character, react to an ending (for example, 'The ending was surprising'), and recommend the story to a friend. This is different from talking about music, because narrative media have a plot and characters, while a song usually does not. You will use the passato prossimo (the common past tense) for events, and the imperfetto for descriptions and background.

    By the end, you can…

    • describe a plot and its main characters in simple Italian.
    • say that an ending was surprising and explain why.
    • recommend a film, series or book to a friend.
    • contrast a story with a song using simple comparisons.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

La trama è semplice ma avvincente.

The plot is simple but gripping.

    lah TRAH-mah eh SEHM-plee-cheh mah ahv-veen-CHEN-teh

Use 'avvincente' for a story that holds your attention; it works for films, series and books.

    Il finale è stato sorprendente.

    The ending was surprising.

    eel fee-NAH-leh eh STAH-toh sor-pren-DEN-teh

'Finale' is masculine here. Use 'è stato' for a surprising event; for a lasting quality you can also say 'era sorprendente'.

Il protagonista è un detective testardo.

The main character is a stubborn detective.

    eel pro-tah-go-NEES-tah eh oon deh-teh-TEE-veh teh-STAR-doh

'Protagonista' can be masculine or feminine: 'la protagonista' for a female lead. Adjectives agree with the person.

    I personaggi sono ben scritti.

    The characters are well written.

    ee per-soh-NAH-jee SOH-noh behn SKREET-tee

'Personaggi' is the plural of 'personaggio'. The adjective 'scritti' agrees with the masculine plural.

Te lo consiglio, ma guarda il primo episodio.

I recommend it to you, but watch the first episode.

    teh loh kon-SEE-lyoh mah GWAHR-dah eel PREE-moh eh-PEE-zoh-dyoh

'Te lo consiglio' is friendly and informal. For formal speech use 'Glielo consiglio'.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To describe what happens in a story, use the passato prossimo: 'Il film racconta che una ragazza ha trovato una lettera.' For the ending, 'Il finale è stato sorprendente' or 'Il finale mi ha sorpreso'. To describe characters and background, use the imperfetto: 'Il protagonista era timido e viveva a Roma.' Remember that adjectives agree: 'un finale sorprendente', 'una storia sorprendente', 'dei personaggi sorprendenti'.

    When to use it

Use these phrases when you talk about a film, a TV series or a book, not when you talk about a song. A song usually has no plot and no characters, so you say 'La canzone parla d'amore' (the song is about love), not 'La trama è...'. When you recommend something, say 'Te lo consiglio' to a friend, or 'Glielo consiglio' in a formal situation. If you want to be careful, add 'secondo me' (in my opinion).

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In Italian conversation, 'Te lo consiglio' is common and friendly, while 'Glielo consiglio' is more formal and used with strangers or in professional contexts. 'Avvincente' is a strong positive word for plots; 'sorprendente' describes a reaction to an event. Regional speech varies: in some northern areas you may hear 'bel film' pronounced with a very open 'e', while in the south vowels are often longer. Standard written Italian still uses 'il finale' for both films and books.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 'La trama è stata sorprendente' when you mean the ending was surprising.

Try this instead: Use 'Il finale è stato sorprendente' for the ending. 'La trama è stata sorprendente' means the whole plot was surprising. For a lasting quality, 'Il finale era sorprendente' is also possible.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'The ending was surprising' in Italian?

    Show a sample answer

    Il finale è stato sorprendente.

'Il finale' is the subject, 'è stato' is the passato prossimo of 'essere', and 'sorprendente' agrees with the masculine singular noun. 'Il finale era sorprendente' is also acceptable if you describe a lasting impression.

2You want to recommend a series to a friend informally. What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

    Te la consiglio.

'Te' is the informal indirect object pronoun, 'la' refers to the feminine noun 'serie', and 'consiglio' is the first-person verb. For a film (masculine) you would say 'Te lo consiglio'.

3Why is talking about a song different from talking about a film?

    Show a sample answer

Perché una canzone di solito non ha una trama e dei personaggi.

A song normally has no plot or characters, so you talk about its theme or mood, not its 'trama'. A film or book has a plot and characters, so you can use 'la trama' and 'i personaggi'.

    Take this with you

Use 'Il finale è stato sorprendente' for a reaction to an ending, 'La trama è...' for the plot, and 'Te lo/la consiglio' to recommend a story. Remember: songs have themes, stories have plots and characters.
