Summarizing in Italian: Say the Main Point in a Few Sentences

Learn elementary Italian phrases and patterns to summarize a short story or article briefly, focusing on main points rather than detailed retelling.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A quiet illustrated scene for evening language practice

When you summarize in Italian, you do not retell every event. You state what the text is about, who is involved, and the main outcome. This lesson gives you simple, standard phrases such as "In breve, ..." and "La storia parla di ..." so you can give a short summary in a few sentences. You will also learn how to avoid common errors with Italian verbs and articles.

    By the end, you can…

    • say what a short story or article is about in one sentence.
    • give a brief summary using three or four simple sentences.
    • use standard phrases to introduce and end a summary.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

In conclusione, il messaggio è chiaro.

In conclusion, the message is clear.

    een kohn-kloo-ZYOH-neh, eel mehs-SAHD-joh eh KYAH-roh

Use "In conclusione" to end a summary. "Messaggio" means "message."

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

A simple summary often follows this pattern: "Il testo parla di ..." (The text is about ...), then "I punti principali sono ..." (The main points are ...), and finally "In conclusione, ..." (In conclusion, ...). For example: "Il testo parla di una ragazza che studia a Roma. I punti principali sono due: lei trova un lavoro e conosce nuovi amici. In conclusione, la storia è positiva." Keep each sentence short and use the present tense.

    When to use it

Use these phrases when you need to summarize a short article, a news item, or a story in class, in a message, or in conversation. For a very short summary, two or three sentences are enough. If you are speaking to a teacher or in a formal context, you can say "Il testo tratta di ..." instead of "parla di." In everyday conversation, "parla di" is more common. Avoid adding many details; focus on the main idea and the outcome.

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In Italian schools and workplaces, summaries often begin with "Il testo parla di..." or "L'articolo tratta di..." and end with "In conclusione...". "In breve" is common in both speech and writing. In formal writing, "In sintesi" is also used. Regional speech may vary, but these standard phrases are understood throughout Italy.

    One thing to watch for

Saying "La storia è su una famiglia" to mean "The story is about a family."

Try this instead: Use "La storia parla di una famiglia" or "La storia riguarda una famiglia." The preposition "su" is not the standard way to express "about" in this context. For example: "Il testo parla di un viaggio."

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
