Italian for a Rush Tailor Job: Ask for a Fast Alteration

Learn to request an urgent alteration in Italian, set a deadline, and ask about extra cost with polite, natural phrases.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

When you need a garment altered quickly, you need more than basic vocabulary. You need to explain the urgency, state your deadline, and ask whether it can be done in time. This lesson teaches you how to ask a tailor for a rush job (un lavoro urgente) using courteous but direct Italian. You will practice key questions like 'È possibile averlo entro giovedì?' and 'Quanto costerebbe in più?', and learn how to negotiate time and cost without sounding demanding. The focus is on real interactions at an Italian sartoria or merceria, with standard contemporary language.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask a tailor for a rush alteration and explain why I need it quickly.
    • state a deadline using entro and a day or date.
    • ask whether an earlier completion is possible and how much extra it would cost.
    • respond politely if the tailor cannot meet my deadline and discuss alternatives.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

Avrei bisogno di un lavoro urgente su questo capo.

I would need a rush job on this garment.

    ah-VREH-ee bee-ZOH-nyoh dee oon lah-VOH-roh oor-JEN-teh soo KWEH-stoh KAH-poh

Polite opening. 'Avrei bisogno' is softer than 'Ho bisogno'. Use 'capo' for a garment item.

Mi serve per sabato. È possibile averlo entro giovedì?

I need it for Saturday. Is it possible to have it by Thursday?

    mee SEHR-veh pehr SAH-bah-toh. eh pos-SEE-bee-leh ah-VEHR-loh EN-troh JOH-veh-dee

States your deadline and asks for an earlier one. 'Entro' means 'by' or 'within' a time limit.

Quanto costerebbe in più per farlo prima?

How much more would it cost to do it earlier?

    KWAHN-toh kos-teh-REB-beh een PEW pehr FAHR-loh PREE-mah

Asks about extra cost without assuming a fixed rush fee. 'In più' means 'extra'.

Se non è possibile entro giovedì, va bene anche venerdì mattina.

If it's not possible by Thursday, Friday morning is also fine.

    seh nohn eh pos-SEE-bee-leh EN-troh JOH-veh-dee, vah BEH-neh AHN-keh vehn-ehr-DEE maht-TEE-nah

Offers a fallback. 'Va bene anche' is a natural way to say 'is also okay'.

    Potrebbe farmi sapere entro domani?

Could you let me know by tomorrow?

    poh-TREB-beh FAHR-mee sah-PEH-reh EN-troh doh-MAH-nee

Polite request for confirmation. 'Potrebbe' is the formal 'could you'.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To ask for a rush job, use 'Avrei bisogno di...' + 'entro' + deadline. Example: 'Avrei bisogno di un lavoro urgente su questa gonna. Mi serve entro venerdì.' To ask if it's possible, use 'È possibile...?' + infinitive: 'È possibile averlo entro giovedì?' To ask about extra cost, use 'Quanto costerebbe in più per...?' + infinitive: 'Quanto costerebbe in più per averlo entro mercoledì?' These patterns are polite and direct.

    When to use it

Use these phrases when you are already at the tailor or merceria and need a quick alteration. Start with 'Avrei bisogno di un lavoro urgente' to signal urgency without demanding. Then state your real deadline: 'Mi serve per sabato.' If you want it earlier, ask 'È possibile averlo entro giovedì?' If the tailor hesitates, ask about cost: 'Quanto costerebbe in più?' If they cannot meet your deadline, offer an alternative: 'Se non è possibile, va bene anche venerdì.' Always use 'Lei' forms with 'Potrebbe' for polite insistence.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Buongiorno, avrei bisogno di un lavoro urgente su questo vestito. Mi serve per sabato.

    Good morning, I would need a rush job on this dress. I need it for Saturday.bwohn-JOHR-noh, ah-VREH-ee bee-ZOH-nyoh dee oon lah-VOH-roh oor-JEN-teh soo KWEH-stoh veh-STEE-toh. mee SEHR-veh pehr SAH-bah-toh

By Thursday yes, but there is a surcharge for priority. I'll let you know the exact cost tomorrow.EN-troh JOH-veh-dee see, mah cheh oon soop-pleh-MEN-toh pehr lah pree-oh-ree-TAH. leh FAHT-choh sah-PEH-reh eel KOH-stoh eh-ZAHT-toh doh-MAH-nee

A little context goes a long way

In Italy, small tailors and mercerie often work on tight schedules, but rush jobs may depend on their current workload. Politeness matters: use 'Lei' with 'Potrebbe' and 'Avrei bisogno' rather than imperative forms. Asking about extra cost is normal, but avoid assuming a fixed rush fee. If the tailor says it's not possible, offering a later deadline shows flexibility and often leads to a better outcome.

    One thing to watch for

Using 'per giovedì' to mean 'by Thursday' when you mean 'within Thursday'.

Try this instead: 'Per giovedì' usually means 'for Thursday' as a deadline, but 'entro giovedì' means 'by Thursday' (no later than Thursday). Use 'entro' when you need it completed before or on that day: 'È possibile averlo entro giovedì?' If you mean 'for Thursday' as the day you will pick it up, 'per giovedì' is fine: 'Mi serve per giovedì.'

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask a tailor if it's possible to have your alteration by Thursday?

    Show a sample answer

    È possibile averlo entro giovedì?

This uses 'È possibile' + infinitive and 'entro' for a deadline. You could also say 'Si può avere entro giovedì?' in a slightly less formal tone.

2How do you ask how much extra it would cost to have it done earlier?

    Show a sample answer

Quanto costerebbe in più per farlo prima?

This uses the conditional 'costerebbe' for politeness and 'in più' for extra cost. 'Per farlo prima' means 'to do it earlier'. You could also ask 'C'è un supplemento per farlo prima?'

3What phrase offers a fallback if Thursday isn't possible?

    Show a sample answer

Se non è possibile entro giovedì, va bene anche venerdì mattina.

This uses 'Se non è possibile' to introduce an alternative and 'va bene anche' to say 'is also fine'. You could also say 'In alternativa, andrebbe bene venerdì.'

    Take this with you

To request a rush alteration in Italian, start with 'Avrei bisogno di un lavoro urgente', state your deadline with 'entro' + day, ask 'È possibile averlo entro...?' and 'Quanto costerebbe in più?'. Stay polite with 'Potrebbe' and offer alternatives if needed.
