Italian for Parcel Pickup: Asking About PIN vs. Shipping Reference at the Post Office

Learn to distinguish codice PIN and codice di spedizione in Italian when collecting a parcel, and ask staff clear questions at the post office or Punto Poste.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.

When you collect a parcel in Italy, staff may ask for a codice PIN or a codice di spedizione. These are different things: the PIN is a short personal code, while the shipping reference is a longer tracking number. This lesson gives you polite, slightly confused phrases to check which one you need, show what you have, and ask where to find the other. You will practice questions and understand common staff replies at a post office or Punto Poste.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask whether a PIN alone is enough to collect a parcel.
    • ask where to find the shipping reference and understand staff questions about it.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

Ho solo il PIN, va bene?

I only have the PIN, is that okay?

oh SOH-loh eel PEEN, vah BYEH-neh

Use when you have a short code and want to check if it is sufficient. Polite and slightly unsure.

Dove trovo il codice di spedizione?

Where do I find the shipping reference?

    DOH-veh TROH-voh eel KOH-dee-cheh dee speh-dee-TSYOH-neh

Ask this if staff mention a shipping reference and you do not know where it is.

Scusi, qual è la differenza tra PIN e codice di spedizione?

Excuse me, what is the difference between the PIN and the shipping reference?

SKOO-zee, kwahl eh lah dee-feh-REN-tsah trah PEEN eh KOH-dee-cheh dee speh-dee-TSYOH-neh

Use when you need clarification. Formal 'Scusi' is appropriate with staff.

Ho questo codice qui. È il PIN o il codice di spedizione?

I have this code here. Is it the PIN or the shipping reference?

oh KWEHS-toh KOH-dee-cheh kwee. eh eel PEEN oh eel KOH-dee-cheh dee speh-dee-TSYOH-neh

Show your phone or paper while asking. Helps staff identify what you have.

Mi scusi, non ho il codice di spedizione. Posso ritirare con il PIN?

Excuse me, I don't have the shipping reference. Can I collect with the PIN?

mee SKOO-zee, nohn oh eel KOH-dee-cheh dee speh-dee-TSYOH-neh. POHS-soh ree-tee-RAH-reh kohn eel PEEN

Use if you only have the PIN and want to ask if pickup is possible. Staff will explain what they need.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To ask if something is enough, use 'Ho solo + [thing], va bene?' Example: 'Ho solo il PIN, va bene?' (I only have the PIN, is that okay?). To ask where to find something, use 'Dove trovo + [thing]?' Example: 'Dove trovo il codice di spedizione?' (Where do I find the shipping reference?). To ask about a difference, use 'Qual è la differenza tra X e Y?' Example: 'Qual è la differenza tra PIN e codice di spedizione?' These patterns work in many service situations.

    When to use it

Use 'Ho solo il PIN, va bene?' when you are at the counter and only have a short code. Use 'Dove trovo il codice di spedizione?' if staff ask for a shipping reference and you need to locate it, for example in an email or app. Use 'Qual è la differenza...' if you are unsure which code they need. Always start with 'Scusi' or 'Mi scusi' to be polite. If staff ask 'Ha il codice di spedizione?' (Do you have the shipping reference?), you can answer 'No, ho solo il PIN' or 'Sì, eccolo' (Yes, here it is).

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

At Italian post offices and Punto Poste counters, staff often ask for a codice di spedizione (shipping reference) even if you have a PIN. The PIN is a short personal code, while the shipping reference is a longer tracking number. Politeness matters: use 'Scusi' or 'Mi scusi' with staff. In informal settings, 'Scusa' is fine, but at a counter, formal is safer. If you don't understand, it's okay to say 'Non ho capito, può ripetere?' (I didn't understand, can you repeat?).

    One thing to watch for

Thinking 'PIN' and 'codice di spedizione' are the same thing and saying 'Ho il codice' without specifying which one.

Try this instead: They are different. Be specific: 'Ho il PIN' (I have the PIN) or 'Ho il codice di spedizione' (I have the shipping reference). If unsure, ask: 'Qual è la differenza tra PIN e codice di spedizione?'

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1You only have a short code. How do you ask if it's enough?

    Show a sample answer

Ho solo il PIN, va bene?

This politely asks if the PIN alone is sufficient. You could also say 'Va bene se ho solo il PIN?' which is equally correct.

2Staff ask for the shipping reference, but you don't know where it is. What do you ask?

    Show a sample answer

Dove trovo il codice di spedizione?

This directly asks where to find it. You could also say 'Sa dove posso trovare il codice di spedizione?' for a more formal tone.

3You want to know the difference between the two codes. What do you ask?

    Show a sample answer

Qual è la differenza tra PIN e codice di spedizione?

This asks for clarification. Another option: 'Mi può spiegare la differenza tra PIN e codice di spedizione?'

    Take this with you

Remember: PIN is short and personal; codice di spedizione is a longer shipping reference. Ask 'Ho solo il PIN, va bene?' or 'Dove trovo il codice di spedizione?' to get clear answers at the counter.
